Why Creativity, Why Now?, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Jan 2012

Why Creativity, Why Now?, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

In 2006 the Association of American Colleges and Universities surveyed 306 businesses to determine the most valuable skills that institutions of higher learning should be teaching, and the Top Three were (in order) teamwork, critical thinking, and communication. Yet in 2010 when IBM’s Institute for Business Values asked 1500 chief executives what leadership competency they championed above all others, voters selected none of the winners from three years before. Instead, the new American idol was creativity.

Bloody Ground: Stories Of Mystery And Intrigue From Kentucky, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

In the 1770's before Daniel Boone finally settled at Boonesborough, he made many forays into "Cantucke," mentally mapping the territory, taking what game he could, and establishing relationships with the Shawnee and settlers. He started with a curiosity about a land he knew little of and ended up becoming its most famous inhabitant. In the 1970's in Richmond, about ten miles from Boone's fort, we sat down in a booth at a local McDonald's and started writing--short stories, plays, novels, magazine columns, newspaper articles, and academic papers. One of us was a native Kentuckian and the other a carpetbagging Connecticut …

Better Than Beige : Designing Assessment Tasks To Enhance Learning And Measure Growth In The Early Years Of School, Prue Anderson, Marion Meiers

Prue Anderson

'I think of our school as beige. We tend to be the average of 'like' schools. Can we do better than that?' In order to promote growth in student learning and demonstrate achievement schools require rich assessment tasks that enhance the teaching and learning cycle and provide a valid and reliable measure of growth. This paper examines the five linked sets of assessment tasks that have been developed to progressively measure growth in literacy and numeracy in the first three years of school. The tasks were designed for the ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Survey (LLANS). The tasks are based …

Automated, Web-Based, Second-Chance Homework, Randall W. Hall, Leslie G. Butler, Saundra Y. Mcguire, Sean P. Mcglynn, Gary L. Lyon, Ron L. Reese, Patrick A. Limbach

Randall W. Hall

Procedures and programs for Web-based homework administration were developed and tested. The special feature of the protocol is the option of a "second chance". When a student gives a wrong answer in the weekly homework assignment, a second version of the same question is posed to that student within 48 hours. Both the original and the second versions of the homework are Web-based and automatically graded. More than 90% of the students used the second chance at least once during the semester. More than 60% used this feature for every homework assignment. The second-chance option motivates students to study the …

The Effect Of Test-Taker Sex, Audience And Topic On Task Performance In Tape-Mediated Assessment Of Speaking, Tom Lumley, Barry O'Sullivan Oct 2001

The Effect Of Test-Taker Sex, Audience And Topic On Task Performance In Tape-Mediated Assessment Of Speaking, Tom Lumley, Barry O'Sullivan

Dr Tom Lumley

There is growing interest in the effect on candidate performance of characteristics of the interlocutor in tests of speaking. A range of variables associated with the interlocutor may cause systematic variation in linguistic performance, and consequently in scores awarded. This paper hypothesises that there may be effects on performance attributable to an interaction of these variables; in the present study, the task topic, the sex of the person presenting the topic and the sex of the candidate. This investigated in the context of a tape-mediated test of speaking, where no interlocutor is actually present; instead, stimulus material is presented by …

Scoring Occupational Categories For Social Research: A Review Of Current Practice, With Australian Examples, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan Aug 2001

Scoring Occupational Categories For Social Research: A Review Of Current Practice, With Australian Examples, F Jones, Julie Mcmillan

Julie McMillan

The scoring of occupational categories has a long history. After reviewing the historical background, we develop and discuss the properties of two new Australian scales based on current theorising in stratification research. The first is based on the operation of the labour market and scores occupations to reflect their central role in converting educational credentials into market income. The second is based on patterns of social interaction and scores occupations to reflect the choices that people make in marriage markets. While these two scales are not theoretically or empirically equivalent, they are closely related and provide equally valid, but alternative, …

Acquisition And Generalization Of Activity Schedules And Their Effects On Task Engagement In A Young Child With Autism In An Inclusive Pre-School Classroom, N. Gayle Massey, John J. Wheeler Aug 2001

Acquisition And Generalization Of Activity Schedules And Their Effects On Task Engagement In A Young Child With Autism In An Inclusive Pre-School Classroom, N. Gayle Massey, John J. Wheeler

John J. Wheeler

Efficacy of individualized activity schedules with a 4-year old child diagnosed with autism who attended an integrated public pre-school classroom was examined. Graduated physical guidance and a system of most-to-least prompts were used during skill acquisition stages with teacher proximity and level of prompts being eventually faded. A multiple baseline across activities (work and leisure) assessed performance across baseline, treatment, and maintenance conditions with stimulus generalization being assessed during a third activity (lunch). Results support the findings from MacDuff, Krantz, and McClannahan (1993) in that a child with autism can successfully acquire the skills necessary to independently follow activity schedules …
