Technology Together: Getting Whole Schools Involved With Ict Through A Metacognitive Approach, Renata Phelps, Anne Graham, Paul Thornton

Professor Anne Graham

Professional development of teachers in information and communication technology (ICT) is an urgent educational imperative, presenting significant financial and strategic challenges internationally. While many teachers are now integrating ICT in innovative and educationally appropriate ways, there are still a significant number of teachers who are resistant to using technology, either personally and/or in their teaching. Moving a whole school forward as a technology-embracing school can be a significant challenge, and teacher professional development is generally seen as the ‘solution’. Research, however, emphasises the importance of positive attitudes, values, beliefs and motivation, lack of anxiety and approach to learning as key …

Technology Together: Supporting Whole-Schools To Become Capable Learning Communities, Renata Phelps, Anne Graham, Elizabeth Watts, Anne O'Brien

Dr Renata Phelps

While many teachers are integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in their teaching practice, there are still a significant number of teachers who are hesitant, reluctant or resistant to using technology, either personally and/or in their teaching. Many teachers remain daunted by the rapid rate of technological change, and the inability to feel as though they ‘know enough’. While most approaches to teacher professional development concentrate on skill development of individual teachers, this paper describes an approach that focuses instead on the values, attitudes, beliefs, confidence and learning strategies of teachers, and on building a culture within a school that …

Creating Web-Based Environmental Education Resources Through Community And University Partnerships, Renata Phelps, Carrie Maddison, Keith R. Skamp, Richard W. Bratihwaite

Dr Renata Phelps

Community groups often seek to engage with schools in promoting environmental education goals. A collaborative initiative is described in which university pre-service teacher education students were encouraged to create Web-based teaching and learning resources, related to rainforests and world heritage areas, for use at primary and secondary levels. The partnership between Southern Cross University and the Advisory Committees of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area took the form of a voluntary competition, which was integrated with students’ university assessment requirements. The factors that influenced students’ decisions to get involved were identified through telephone interviews. Insight was also gained …

Ict In The Secondary Visual Arts Classroom: A Study Of Teachers' Values, Attitudes And Beliefs, Renata Phelps, Carrie Maddison Aug 2009

Ict In The Secondary Visual Arts Classroom: A Study Of Teachers' Values, Attitudes And Beliefs, Renata Phelps, Carrie Maddison

Dr Renata Phelps

For some 20 years the literature has been highlighting a range of benefits to be gained from integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in the teaching of visual arts. However, little research has depicted the 'state of play' regarding visual arts teachers' approaches to technology within the Australian context. This paper reports on a study of 14 visual arts teachers from a rural area of Australia and reveals broad diversity in individual teachers' social, artistic and educational values, attitudes and beliefs about ICT, leading to widely diverse approaches to both their personal and professional use of technology. The paper explores …

Developing Technology Together, Together: A Whole-School Metacognitive Approach To Ict Teacher Professional Development, Renata Phelps, Anne Graham

Dr Renata Phelps

Professional development of teachers in information and communication technology (ICT) continues to be an urgent educational imperative. While many teachers are integrating ICT (with varying degrees of confidence and creativity), a significant number still remain hesitant, reluctant and daunted by the rapid rate of technological change. Far from being a simple process, ICT professional development necessitates not only personal and professional changes for individuals, but changes in school culture including institutional attitude and support for professional learning, reflection and professional discussion, readiness to embrace change, collegiality, trust and encouragement to take risks. Grounded in research about what influences teachers’ adoption …

Report On A Survey Of Professional Development Approaches And Needs Of Teachers In The Lismore Diocese, Anne Graham, Renata Phelps

Dr Renata Phelps

The Catholic Education Office, through Dr Berenice Kerr, approached the School of Education in June 2002 to undertake professional development in ICT with a group of 40 teachers from secondary schools in the Diocese. The research associated with this professional development initiative is the subject of a separate report recently submitted to the Director of Schools. In preparing to undertake the ICT initiative, broader discussions took place concerning the approaches to professional development preferred by teachers in the Diocese. It appeared there was little data available on teachers’ views of professional development, the types of activities they have been involved …

District Flunked Test On Evaluating School Principals - Petrilli Trial Revealed Weakness, Richard E. Day Aug 2009

District Flunked Test On Evaluating School Principals - Petrilli Trial Revealed Weakness, Richard E. Day

Richard E. Day

A surprising revelation from Peggy Petrilli's unsuccessful racial discrimination suit against Fayette County Superintendent Stu Silberman was that principals rarely - if ever - get marked down on their evaluations. A Herald-Leader editorial was correct to say, "the district must do a better job of evaluating employees. ... employees who aren't accurately graded can't really be expected to improve." Given his considerable talents, it must have been difficult for the editorial board to pen comments critical of Silberman, although they softened it as much as they could.

Reporting And Comparing School Performances, Geoff Masters, Glenn Rowley, John Ainley, Siek Toon Khoo Aug 2009

Reporting And Comparing School Performances, Geoff Masters, Glenn Rowley, John Ainley, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr John Ainley

This report provides advice on the collection and reporting of information about the performances of Australian schools. The focus is on the collection of nationally comparable data. Two purposes are envisaged: use by education authorities and governments to monitor school performances and, in particular, to identify schools that are performing unusually well or unusually poorly given their circumstances; and use by parents/caregivers and the public to make informed judgements about, and meaningful comparisons of, schools and their offerings. Our advice is based on a review of recent Australian and international research and experience in reporting on the performances of schools. …

We begin our presentation with an overview of Google Tools and the benefits of using them in your classroom. We will discuss methods to increase student access to information, decrease workloads, and create collaborative opportunities. With the current economic times, budgets are feeling the strain, as are teachers and faculty in Higher Education settings. With web 2.0 tools, specifically Google Tools, we are empowered to use the technology to decrease our budgets, create a paperless environment, and introduce collaborative learning environments into our curriculum.

Our research serves to legitimize teachers in order to empower them to encourage our digital natives …

Economics Of Quality Schooling, Gerald Burke, Phil Mckenzie Jul 2009

Economics Of Quality Schooling, Gerald Burke, Phil Mckenzie

Dr Phillip McKenzie

The case for public expenditure on education is based on its contribution to the good of society over and above the benefits received by the individual educated. These benefits can be economic, the benefits of a larger pool of educated labour that allow for rapid economic development, and social, including the benefits of more committed law abiding citizens and the relief of poverty.

Some of the issues are considered in this paper:

1. The level of public expenditure on education and its distribution in relation to need

2. Where expenditure can yield most benefits

3. The incentives and system level …

We Live To Create Dissonance: Can You Be Racist And A Christian?, Theron Ford Jul 2009

We Live To Create Dissonance: Can You Be Racist And A Christian?, Theron Ford

Theron N Ford

Confronted with the reality of the limited exposure to human diversity among their students at two Christian universities, two African American professors relate their efforts to prepare students to teach in the twenty-first century. This article is a reflective report on the strategies and events that occurred as a result of challenging students' long-held beliefs and attitudes. Strategies were deliberately provocative and disturbing, intended to create dissonance within the students related to Christian ideals and perceptions of non-European Americans. Ultimately, students confronted the question: "Is it possible to be a Christian and racist?"

Catalyzing Transformation: Conditions In Extension Educational Environments That Promote Change, Nancy K. Fran, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Chris Smith, Brian Peters

Barry A Garst

Extension faculty and administrators have suggested Cooperative Extension's goal and niche is transformative education—to bring about deep change in individuals, families, and communities. However even though transformative learning appears to be a desirable approach to Extension education, few scholars and practitioners have examined the conditions in Extension learning environments that promote transformation. In fact, Extension agents and faculty ask what they can do to increase the likelihood their work will result in transformation. The research reported here explored conditions that catalyze transformation in two Extension educational contexts: 1) Cornell Cooperative Extension agent/specialist work teams and 2) Virginia 4-H Camps.

The Mirror Effect, The Law Of Attraction, And "Points Of Attraction" That Can Nurture The Evolution Of Human Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson Jul 2009

The Mirror Effect, The Law Of Attraction, And "Points Of Attraction" That Can Nurture The Evolution Of Human Consciousness, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

This message has several purposes. First, I want to express my immense joy that Chip Baggett and I are serving as Co-Presidents of AHP since August 16, 2009. In my view, Chip and I are long-time friends, who have a transcendent connection and synergistic energies. My desire and intent is for our co-presidency to mirror the effect(s) of synergistic collaboration as a “point of attraction” that can assist in the evolution of human consciousness across often “perceived personal and societal boundaries” (e.g., race, culture, ethnicity, class, individual and collective belief systems, and dogma). More generally, however, this message is intended …

White Paper: Sexual Harassment And Assault Prevention Education Manual For Faculty And Staff Leaders, John D. Foubert, Christopher Kilmarting, Gail Stern

John D. Foubert

The curriculum for the SHAPE program at the United States Naval Academy was written and in accordance with the contractual terms made with and will be copyrighted by three independent consultants hired by the United States Naval Academy: Gail Stern, Christopher Kilmartin, and John Foubert. This manual was written with the intention of providing a document for USNA faculty and staff who were hired to take over the consultant’s responsibilities for program development and training. We will discuss philosophical issues undergirding the choices we made in writing the program sessions and in conducting the training for peer educators. By providing …
