A collaborative team of faculty and students from across Sacred Heart University is developing a new recruiting and information tool aimed at introducing prospective and new students and their families to the University using media that today’s students are comfortable with—gaming technology. The project team, led by Robert McCloud, associate professor of computer sciences and information technology, includes several other faculty members with complementary skills such as 3D animation and digital motion, music composition and script writing.

Book Ends is a site-based University reading clinic that provides a nurturing and interactive environment that empowers children to increase their reading achievement through multimodal and research-based practices in literacy. Trained to administer multiple assessments, certified teachers pursuing advanced literacy CT State Certification provide one-on-one instruction that considers students’ interests and strengths while targeting the foundational skills of the common core state standards and the comprehension anchor standards. On September 23, as part of Sacred Heart University’s commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Michael W. Higgins provided insight into the University’s beginnings and its promising future. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

Sacred Heart University’s SHUsquare website made its official debut on September 10 2013 at a meeting attended by first-year students and faculty in the Fairfield campus’ Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts.
Marie Hulme, and English instructor and director of SHUsquare, which has been described as a “Virtual Public Square,” introduced the new and exciting initiative. She told the audience that SHUsquare is “a social media platform that allows students and faculty to keep conversations going beyond the classroom and a place of intellectual connectivity.”

This is a lecture in honor of the Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, president of Saint Anselm College, before his retirement. The lecture addresses the challenges facing Catholic higher education. Part One lays out philosopher Martha Nussbaum's view of the crisis of the humanities. Based in her ideas, Part Two examines four challenges facing Catholic higher education. Part Three gives an account of the Catholic philosophy of higher education for the common good, featuring Jacques Maritain’s educational and political philosophy. The Conclusion revisits the challenges in light of Maritain's, and the author's, Catholic philosophy of education.
