Educators have taught literacy using a variety of methods and theories. While a number of these methods and theories have come and gone, guided reading, running records, and miscue analysis have proven to provide educators with the resources needed to understand the variety of reading behaviors children have. In addition, researchers and educators have found that a balanced approach to literacy is the most effective method of teaching reading. The purpose of this project was to research guided reading, running records, and miscue analysis and prepare a PowerPoint presentation for educators at Laurel Elementary school.

From conception, the male and female brains develop differently. Due to these differences, current research shows methods of teaching should be examined and modified to accommodate both genders' learning needs. Educating teachers on the brain diversities between the genders is essential for opportunities in establishing a positive classroom atmosphere. In this project, the author has created an interactive workshop for new and experienced teachers to explore the vast differences between the male and female brain, and what those differences mean in the classroom. In this research project, the author presents a 6 week curricular unit that will be implemented at Soroco Middle School as a component of the Grade 7 language arts curriculum. This unit is designed to provide educators with: (a) a clear, concise method to prepare a wide variety of students for high stakes testing; (b) a deliberate approach to teach diverse students how to think critically and argue constructively; and (c) a concrete, effective method to teach a wide range of students how to use multiple writing strategies to construct persuasive paragraphs.

Teaching English As A Second Language Students Literacy: A Comprehensive Literacy Model For Monolingual Educators, Kristen M. Rodgers

This research project, utilizing both primary and secondary sources, provides teachers with effective methods and activities to develop literacy in a monolingual classroom for English as a second language (ESL) students. The literacy methods and activities within this research project are broken into the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) and writing. The conclusion of this research project provides teachers with the necessary steps to enhance literacy instruction for ESL students.
