Teaching Science To Students With Limited English Proficiency Using Cooperative Learning Techniques, Ellen H. Leduc

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Minimal class participation by students with limited English proficiency and failure of the students with limited English proficiency to pass tests given in the regular classroom were addressed by the implementation of a science program involving strategies for the use of the scientific method of investigation, hands-on activities, experiments, music, creative movements done to poetry, and a science fair exhibit. Cooperative learning strategies were employed, utilizing the bilingual setting to the extent that each student with limited English proficiency was paired with at least two bilingual students who spoke both Spanish, the language of the target group, and English. The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older). The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …

The Effects Of Modeling And Repeated Taped Reading Instruction On The Learning Disabled Child As Ways To Improve Reading Comprehension Fluency And Word Recognition, Anne L. Rokicki

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This practicum addressed the need to develop an alternative method of teaching reading to learning disabled students who have experienced little success in this area. The necessity for implementation was documented by students' 1989 scores on the Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, reading portion. A baseline of students’ pre-intervention performance in oral reading, comprehension, and word recognition both in context and in isolation was established. These scores were compared with post-intervention scores and with students' 1990 scores on the Brigance Test, reading portion. The Heathington Attitude Scale was administered pre and post intervention to determine positive changes in students’ …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The practicum proposal was directed at a targeted group of migrant sixth grade students who were performing below grade expectations in science. Remediation was provided in an effort to improve the migrant students’ comprehension and use of basic scientific terms. The remediation activities enabled students to develop comprehension through frequent purposeful drill and review of key scientific terms. Vocabulary was presented as an integrated activity. Pre and Posttest were administered to the migrant students. Mean scores showed at least a 20 percent increase in performance on unified science curriculum tests. Student grades also improve by at least one letter grade.
