The first four floors of Hale Library are empty. The damage from the May 22 fire has been torn out, scraped away, scrubbed off. Without carpet, furnishings, technology, books and—most importantly—people, the spaces feel cavernous and cold. Now, it’s time. We have been given a fresh start, and we’re creating a new Hale Library.

Hale Library's Collections: Boxed Up And Packed Out, Kansas State University Libraries

Thanks to hundreds of workers who put in thousands of hours, more than 1.5 million collection items were packed out of Hale Library less than 17 weeks after the fire. Until Hale Library is renovated, all of its books—approximately 147,400 boxes of them—will be stored in multiple air-conditioned warehouses across the region.

Unique Book By Dwight Eisenhower Makes Its Way Back To K-State, Kansas State University Libraries

Late last year, donor Richard D. Rees presented a book by Dwight D. Eisenhower to the university, K-State Libraries and Richard and Mary Jo Myers. Eisenhower wrote "Crusade in Europe" in 1948, a few years before he became president. Twenty-five special copies were reserved for Eisenhower to give to family and friends. Rees gifted No. 7, the copy Eisenhower presented to Milton Eisenhower, his youngest brother and president of the university 1943-50.

As World War I raged in Europe during the summer of 1918, U.S. leaders had no way of knowing how long it would continue. In preparation for a long-term conflict, created the Students’ Army Training Corps (SATC) at over 500 educational institutions across the U.S., including K-State. Since the armistice occurred on November 11, the SATC lasted for less than three months. Despite its short life, the SATC helped K-State strengthen its relationship with the military and recover enrollment losses from earlier enlistments.

On January 19, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. gave an All-University Convocation speech titled “The Future of Integration” at Ahearn Field House at Kansas State University. In his last university-wide address before his assassination on April 4, 1968, King reflected on the nation’s struggle for racial justice and the challenges that remained.

The Paul Weigel Library of Architecture, Planning & Design operated in five different Seaton Hall locations after it was established in 1921. Now, in its new 6,500-square-foot Regnier Hall home, Weigel Library is part of a modern glass nexus between two historic limestone structures.
