Method: A survey consisting of 26 items was given to 598 SLPs from eight states representing geographic regions of the United States.

Results: Participants acknowledged that violence is an increasing concern. They also recognized the valuable role they have in planning prevention programs and serving on multidisciplinary teams. Making Thinking Visible: A Method To Encourage Science Writing In Upper Elementary Grades, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Robert C. Calfee Jan 2004

Making Thinking Visible: A Method To Encourage Science Writing In Upper Elementary Grades, Roxanne Greitz Miller, Robert C. Calfee

Education Faculty Articles and Research

In order to make a dramatic change in the way teachers approach science writing, the authors found it necessary to address both science instruction as a whole and the use of writing during various stages. To guide them in this endeavor and communicate a concrete idea of an ideal foundation for highly effective science writing to teachers, the authors turned to the CORE Model of Instruction. The CORE Model on instruction, which was originally developed as a representation of the manner in which reading and writing can be linked and reinforcing to each other, is described in this article. The …

We Change The World By Doing Nothing, Suzanne Soohoo Jan 2004

We Change The World By Doing Nothing, Suzanne Soohoo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"The focus of this essay is on what I refer to as 'bystander apathy.' Bystanderism is the response of people who observe something that demands intervention on their part, but they choose not to get involved. I write this piece to shed light on this issue for others as well as for my own self-reflection - to understand more deeply why some people act against abuses of power and others don't; why sometimes I act and sometimes I don't. What are the forces, both internal and external, that work to keep us all from speaking against and standing up to …

Teaching In And Against The Empire: Critical Pedagogy As Revolutionary Praxis, Peter Mclaren, Gregory Martin, Ramin Farahmandpur, Nathalia Jaramillo Jan 2004

Teaching In And Against The Empire: Critical Pedagogy As Revolutionary Praxis, Peter Mclaren, Gregory Martin, Ramin Farahmandpur, Nathalia Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"All across the country, critical educators are fighting on dozens of fronts, searching in both form and content for a coherent pedagogical expression that captures their opposition to what they perceive as major developments of world-historical importance... Whilst we will mention some of these fronts in our discussion, our focus will be on expanding the concept so that it addresses both the urgency and the scope of the current crisis of capitalism in relation to the crisis of educational reform, and takes as its central aim the struggle against capitalism and imperialism."

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller Jan 2004

Making Science Teams Work, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Science teachers, likely have more experience with students working together than teachers in any other subject area due to teaming students for hands-on activities. While the importance of teamwork is emphasized in the National Science Education Standards, getting teams to actually work-meaning getting students to share equally in the academic assignments and to interact in a positive and productive manner-often eludes even the best of teachers. It has been the author's experience as a middle level science teacher that effective teaming requires careful planning, clear communication with students and parents, relevant motivational strategies, and arranging the classroom and activities to …

Assessment Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Fred Smoller Jan 2004

Assessment Is Not A Four-Letter Word, Fred Smoller

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

The past two decades has seen a rising tide of criticism of American universities. This criticism is expressed in national reports, voter initiatives, legislative reports, and by employers and accrediting agencies who have concluded that there is “a crisis of educational quality in our nation's colleges and universities” (Gardiner 1998, 71–88) and that “a disturbing and dangerous mismatch exists between what American society needs from higher education and what it is receiving” (Wingspread Group on Higher Education 1993). From such criticisms, the assessment movement was born (see, for example, Diamond 1998; Palomba and Banta 1999; Allen 2004).

Guest Editors' Introduction To "Disability Studies And Education" Issue, Susan Gabel, Scot Danforth

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"We are pleased to present a special issue entitled Disability Studies and Education to DSQ readers. While the articles in this special issue do not speak to a single theme, the thread that holds them together is each author's utilization of a disability studies perspective in the analysis of educational issues. As a whole, the articles provide a sample of the growing body of work by educational researchers; a body of work that has come to be known as 'disability studies in education.'"
