Promoting Preschoolers Actual And Perceived Motor Competence During Recess: A Need-Supportive Motor Skill Intervention, Ana L. West, Joonyoung Lee, Tao Zhang
Promoting Preschoolers Actual And Perceived Motor Competence During Recess: A Need-Supportive Motor Skill Intervention, Ana L. West, Joonyoung Lee, Tao Zhang
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Using the self-determination theory (SDT) to create a need-supportive teaching environment to promote children’s learning, this study aimed to implement a need-supportive, structured fundamental motor skills (FMS)-based intervention during preschoolers’ 30-minute recess (2 lesson plans; 6 lessons/week for four weeks), and to examine intervention effects on preschoolers’ FMS and perceived competence. Twenty-four preschoolers (Mage = 4.80, SD = 0.32; 54% girls) were randomly assigned to intervention (N = 13) and control (N = 11) groups. Pre- and post-assessments measured actual FMS and perceived competence. A repeated measure MANOVA showed significant improvements between the groups over time …
Coding Protocol: Early Math Interventions In Informal Learning Settings: Attention To Literacy, Hannah Carter, Gena Nelson, Peter Boedeker

The purpose of this document is to provide readers with the coding protocol that authors used to code 51 studies that met inclusion criteria for a systematic review. This systematic review focused on how literacy is incorporated into informal math intervention studies for children in preschool to third grade. We investigated what types of literacy activities were integrated, how literacy was a part of data sources collected, and in what ways literacy was mentioned explicitly by authors in research reports. We coded studies in this systematic review to answer the following research questions: (1) How is literacy incorporated? (2) What …
Normalization Of Virtual Home Visiting In Idaho, Ashtin Glodt
Normalization Of Virtual Home Visiting In Idaho, Ashtin Glodt
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Background
Home visiting pairs expectant parents and those with young children with an early childhood professional who builds a long-term relationship with each family by regularly meeting with them in their homes and providing knowledge and skills that supports both parent and child health and well-being. In spring 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, home visitors had to quickly transition from exclusively in-person services to virtual services, which created new challenges and opportunities.
Aim
To explore (1) the degree to which virtual home visiting practice has been normalized, as defined by Normalization Process Theory, by home visitors in Idaho, (2) …
An Exploration Of The Nature Of Social Interactions Between Preschool Students With Diverse Social-Emotional Skills During Engineering Activities, Gurupriya Ramanathan
An Exploration Of The Nature Of Social Interactions Between Preschool Students With Diverse Social-Emotional Skills During Engineering Activities, Gurupriya Ramanathan
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Peer interactions are a significant part of school experiences and influence children’s adjustment to school, however preschool students with and at-risk for disabilities are found to display a unique trajectory of social development, often requiring intentional instruction in social skills. A variety of interventions have been designed to support these students; however, they target foundational skills such as inviting peers to play and taking turns with materials, leaving a gap in the research on more complex social skills such as collaboration and joint problem-solving. The engineering design process (EDP) is a cyclical method that students follow to collectively build a …
The Convergence Of Negotiated Imaginative Play, Literacy Learning And Kindergarten Common Core English Language Arts Standards, Grace Salinas-Casper
The Convergence Of Negotiated Imaginative Play, Literacy Learning And Kindergarten Common Core English Language Arts Standards, Grace Salinas-Casper
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The implementation of strict academic requirements is replacing play as a previously widely accepted developmentally appropriate practice in kindergarten classrooms around the United States, resulting in an imbalance in cultivating the whole child. Research focused on the importance of play in children’s cognitive, linguistic, physical, moral, creative, emotional and artistic development exists. Couched in Vygotsky’s social development theory and the Reggio Emilia principle this ethnographic case study investigates how kindergarteners demonstrate literacy learning, practice and mastery of Common Core English Language Arts Standards (CC.ELA) through imaginative play in a negotiated environment. Research outcomes suggested that negotiated play appears to provide …
Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson
Education: Ancient And Modern, Kyle Edward Eidson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
John Dewey’s progressive education differed from the classical model. The entrenchment of Dewey’s progressive education at all levels of education has led to a decline in academic performance. The modern ideas of American education hardly resemble the ones it was founded on. This paper looks at a model of classical education adopted by the American founders—as well as classical education itself—and to Dewey, the preeminent scholar and philosopher of American, progressive education, whose aim was to develop an egalitarian society trained in non-traditional academics. The paper also looks at Dewey’s child-centered model that contributes to sinking academic performance, and to …
