Learning With Personal Computers: Issues, Observations And Perspectives, Helga A.H. Rowe, Irene Brown, Isabel Lesman
Digital learning research
The empirical study discussed in this book was conducted in the Sunrise classrooms at Coombabah State School, Queensland in 1991-92, in which each student had their own laptop computer. Part I provides a theoretical framework for learning and teaching with computers. Part II deals with issues relating to the acquisition of computer literacy. Part III describes the empirical study conducted with 115 Year 6 and Year 7 students, and Part IV deals with issues relating to the professional development of teachers who teach students with computers and with the evaluation of computer software by teachers.

ACER Annual Reports
This annual report examines recent changes in Australian education. Two strong emerging trends emerging are: increasing participation rates as more young people stay in the formal education system beyond the compulsory years and a shift in focus from the input in education to outcomes and sharpening of the way in which the outcomes are defined. The report includes: (1) Director's Comment: Competence or Expertise?; (2) Highlights of the Year for ACER; (3) Research and Development Activities (Overview of Themes, Beyond the Compulsory School Years; Cognition, Technology and the Classroom; Teachers and Teaching; Educational Management and Change; Assessment and Reporting; Measurement …

Competency Based Assessment In The Professions, Geoff N. Masters, Doug Mccurry
Competency Based Assessment In The Professions, Geoff N. Masters, Doug Mccurry
Vocational, adult and professional education research
The purpose of this paper is to assist professions to develop, in conjunction with National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition, the most suitable methods of assessing individuals against national competency standards; to provide advice on assessment methods likely to be practical and useful for the professions generally; and to provide advice on assessment methods consistent with the Commonwealth government's principles for the reform of the overseas skills recognition process. The authors consider alternative ways of conceptualising occupational competence and show how different conceptualisations can have very different implications for assessment. They briefly review the notion of competency based assessment. What …

Profiles Of Learning. The Basic Skills Testing Program In New South Wales 1989, Geoff N. Masters, Janice Lokan, Brian Doig, Siek Toon Khoo, John Lindsey, Lynette Robinson, Susan Zammit
Assessment and Reporting
The 1989 Basic Skills Testing Program in New South Wales provides the most comprehensive picture yet compiled of literacy and numeracy learning in Australian primary schools. In 1989, some 53,800 Year 6 students in NSW government schools were tested in five aspects of literacy and numeracy. Another 2,300 Year 3 students took part in a pilot study. This book discusses the writing of the tests, the analysis of results, and the reporting of results to parents, teachers and schools. The aim of the basic skills tests is to describe, in positive terms, the skills that students have mastered, to identify …

Adaptive Testing, Information And The Partial Credit Model: A Simulation Study, Raymond J. Adams
Adaptive Testing, Information And The Partial Credit Model: A Simulation Study, Raymond J. Adams
Measurement and statistics
In adaptive testing each individual is tested with a set of items that is selected to match his/her estimated ability at the time of testing. In its most sophisticated form an adaptive test is interactively administered by a computer that scores the test and uses the individual's pattern of correct and incorrect responses to select new items from an item bank. In this procedure items are selected during the process of administering a test (rather than as a part of a predetermined sequence) so that the items administered to each individual are appropriate in difficulty for that individual. The result …

Study Process Questionnaire: Student Approaches To Learning And Studying, John B. Biggs
Study Process Questionnaire: Student Approaches To Learning And Studying, John B. Biggs
Higher education research
Student Approaches to Learning and Studying formulates a theory of student learning which, together with the instruments deriving from it, has important implications for teaching practice at the secondary and tertiary level. The norms were established on two secondary and two tertiary large national samples. The instruments are easy and convenient to administer and score, and their inter-pretation and use are based on carefully researched but easy-to-grasp theory. Student Approaches to Learning and Studying consists of a Research Monograph which describes the investigations leading to the theory's formulation; LPQ Manual which gives data on reliability and validityand describes a 36 …
