A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Using social studies as the core of the curriculum is an effective educational framework for five and six year olds. When this curriculum starts with the children's life experiences and goes on to study some aspect of their community or environment, children can begin to understand the interconnectedness of the adult world. Young children feel the excitement of learning when they immerse themselves in a study; they find that learning can be a vital process related to their needs and experiences, rather than a dry transfer of skills and pre-existing bodies of knowledge.

Behind The Mask: The Application Of Manipulative Instructional Aids In The Teaching Of Social Studies With Economically Disadvantaged Students, Victoria Hunter Sanders

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the problem:

Teachers of economically disadvantaged students face many pragmatic and problematic considerations, one of which is the motoric learning style of their pupils. A theoretical basis for greater involvement in the psycho-motor domain of learning has been presented in educational literature by Dewey, Piaget, Gagne, et al. Recent curriculum approaches seem to neglect psycho-motor development in favor of more cognitive and affective domains of learning.

It is the purpose of this film-study to 1) show the application of manipulative instructional aids in teaching Social Studies to economically disadvantaged seventh grade students; and 2) to depict, through the …

The Festival of Nations, an all-school activity of the Edison Elementary School of the Washington State Normal School at Ellensburg, has through three years of experience proved itself very rich in social learnings. The festival idea began when a bazaar was suggested as a means of earning money to meet the special activity needs of the school. The teachers agreed that any project used to raise funds should also be of real educational value. It should be related, so far as possible, to the interests of the children in grades two to six inclusive, since these would be the groups …
