Dialogue As Performance. Performance As Dialogue, Laura Lynn
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
This dissertation is an arts-based qualitative study in Leadership and Change that describes the qualities of dialogue revealed through the felt experience of Native and non-Native American music composers engaged in a dialogue through music composition. The fifteen co-collaborators who participated in the study range in age from three-years-old to elders. The study is theoretically embedded within Performance Studies, Dr. Carolyn Kenny’s music therapy model Field of Play, and aesthetic philosophy. Methodologically, this work is expressed through performance ethnography and autoethnography and privileges textual and non-textual modes of account including photographs, video excerpts, poetry, and music manuscript. Symphonic Band Conducting Practicum, Allison Schmidtke
Symphonic Band Conducting Practicum, Allison Schmidtke
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Most music education majors take a year-long sequence of conducting classes in their junior year, about two years before we student teach. Unfortunately, of necessity, these conducting classes are rather contrived. Over the period of each quarter, we conducted our ensemble of cooperative, musically mature peers through about five eight- measure exercises focusing on a specific skill. Of course, since actual technique is only one (small) aspect of work on a podium, we were also introduced to the process of score study with its multitude of layers such as consideration of harmonic structure, stylistic elements, orchestration, context (historical influences, information …

0479: Wendell Kumlien Papers, 1963-1987, Marshall University Special Collections
Guides to Manuscript Collections
This collection is predominantly composed of Kumlien’s notes for assorted music courses he taught while at Marshall. Due to the disorganized and frequently unidentified nature of the content, all course materials such as outlines, lecture notes, and related class materials are grouped into folders 1 to 5. Other class materials include a separate folder for final exams and review guides which provide the course number and title as well as two student papers. Also included in the collection to a lesser extent are handbooks, faculty, and administrative material, materials related to a concert by Jon and Sharon Polifrone, and an …

The Superintendent's Point Of View Concerning Music In The High Schools Of Washington State, Morris Ray Pedersen
The Superintendent's Point Of View Concerning Music In The High Schools Of Washington State, Morris Ray Pedersen
All Master's Theses
A common philosophy of administrators and music educators should be prerequisite for a successful music program. This philosophy should permit enough flexibility to allow for individual differences and yet be rigid enough to encompass general education needs and goals. It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.

Experimental Studies In Junior High School Monotonism, Lina Baldauf Knight
Experimental Studies In Junior High School Monotonism, Lina Baldauf Knight
Graduate Thesis Collection
The individual who lacks the use of his voice as a musical instrument lacks the natural, fundamental medium of musical expression. Not only does he lack the means for the closest and most direct relationship with music, but also there is a serious danger that, as a result, his whole range of musical appreciation will be impaired and finally obliterated. This is likely to occur because he does not have at his command and under his control this power which he so definitely needs. Children who are thus handicapped are often designated by the use of the word monotone.

For this reason and since the greatest outward appearance of advance in the band movement has been made in the past decade in Western Kansas the present survey will present the situation as found …
