Effects Of Pcb 126 And Ammonia, Alone And In Combination, On Green Frog (Rana Clamitans) And Leopard Frog (R. Pipiens) Hatching Success, Development, And Metamorphosis, Mariana Beatriz Jofre, Michele L. Rosenshield, William H. Karasov
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Green Bay watershed in Wisconsin is polluted with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxin, heavy metals, ammonia, and over 100 organic contaminants. In this study we exposed embryos and larvae of two ranid species commonly occurring in the Green Bay ecosystem, the green frog (Rana clamitans) and the leopard frog (R. pipiens), to PCB 126 (3,3', 4,4', 5-Pentachlorobyphenil, nominal concentrations 0-50 μg/l, two control treatments: water plus 0.08% acetone as carrier for the PCB, water alone), unionized ammonia (0-2 mg/I), and mixtures of both contaminants. Exposure to PCB 126 did not cause significant mortality of embryos before hatching. However, exposure to …

The Development Of An On-Line Learning Community Of Physical And Health Education Professionals, Lori Lockyer, Gregg S. Rowland, John W. Patterson
Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)
While ad hoc, course-specific projects have allowed early adopters to explore possible innovations in the use of information and communication technologies in facilitating flexible learning situations, educational institutions are now exploring more integrated strategies to such developments. This paper describes the development of one such strategy that attempts to foster a community-wide approach for a group of professionals coming to terms with the most effective way to utilise technologies -- physical and health educators. The Faculty of Education at University of Wollongong is developing an on-line learning community to facilitate the pre-service education and continuing professional development of students, faculty …

Report 1996-02: Development, Progress, and Accomplishments of Institutional Assessment at Western Washington University-1990 to 1996 The fall of 1996 marked six years of assessment efforts at Western. In December, 1996, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing produced a six-year retrospective of its work. The original purpose of the Washington State's assessment movement was to improve the quality of programs and provide performance accountability. These basic tenets have changed little in six years. Moreover, assessment did not just begin at Western in 1990. Before the statewide mandate for assessment, Western was already carrying out assessment activities: for instance, end-of-program assessment …

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Early childhood educators tend to be people who like to agree with their colleagues. Often we avoid conflict situations and keep the peace by being silent, rather than raising our voices in dissent. But rapid changes to the field, coupled with the explosion of knowledge in the 90s, have opened up new dilemmas and new challenges for teachers. If we are to meet these challenges in a way that honours young children, then we need to talk about our differences and diverse views in a spirit of trust and professional collegiality.

Executive Summary: This study was undertaken to establish a technique for quantifying nontraditional assessment outcomes data, to ascertain the effectiveness of the Fairhaven methodology of education, and to provide feedback about that methodology to Fairhaven instructors and administrators. Two assessment tools were utilized: the Perry scheme and the Measure of Intellectual Development (MID). The Perry scheme is a stratified model of cognitive development; the MID is a rating system that allows researchers to assign scores to Perry scheme positions. For both, student writing samples are the most commonly used form of input data. In lieu of letter grades, Fairhaven students …

All Graduate Projects
The author's perception is that a need exists for a classroom behavior management handbook targeting developmentally delayed children ages three years through first grade. Several occurrences have prompted this perception: 1. Approach by other teachers asking how to handle certain behaviors 2. Author's own experiences and frustrations 3. Participation in group discussions regarding behaviors The author has chosen to do this study and develop a handbook to meet this perceived need.

Ec95-1249 Potato Production Stages: Scheduling Key Practices, Alexander D. Pavlista
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Characterization of potato growth and development is important for the scheduling of production practices, yield prediction and hail loss insurance. Most past descriptions emphasize above-ground vine growth, and neglect below-ground tubers. Recently, growth stages have been described integrating both practices to them. This circular describes stages of potato production and indicates key practices at each stage.

Along with many areas in the United States of America, Carbon County, Utah is considered economically depressed. With the unemployment rate at nearly 14%, spouses have entered the work force. In addition there are many single parents. This has left a high rate of children at risk and increased the demand for home day care providers, Although twelve hours of training per year are mandated by state law, very few providers have had any formal or professional training beyond an occasional evening workshop . What training has been offered has generally been along the lines of managerial, business and physical environment …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Many advocates of the deaf fear that a whole generation of deaf children will be lost emotionally. socially. and educationally. This fear stems from the fact that many children who are deaf are not having their linguistic. sociocultural. and communicative needs met at home or at school (King, 1993). Their needs are not met primarily for three reasons. First. the hearing culture is often inaccessible to them because they do not understand most of the spoken language around them. When children lack the communicative abilities to interact with the hearing culture. they can not be expected to be knowledgeable of …

Rationality As A Goal Of Education, David Moshman
Rationality As A Goal Of Education, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Abstract Those who believe education should involve more than learning facts often stress either (a) development or (b) thinking skills. A focus on development as a goal of education typically entails a conception of knowledge as organismic, holistic, and internally generated. In contrast, thinking skills programs commonly assume a mechanistic, reductionist perspective in which good thinking consists of some finite number of directly teachable skills. A conception of rationality as a goal of education is proposed that incorporates the complementary strengths and avoids the limitations of the developmental and thinking skills approaches. Rationality is defined as the self-reflective, intentional, and …

G90-962 Introducing Solid Foods To Babies, Darlene Martin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains when and how to add solid foods to your baby's diet.
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of a baby's growth and development. The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breast-feeding for most full-term infants. No formula can replace the immunological protection a baby receives from colostrum -- the breast milk produced the first few days after birth. It's important to breast-feed for at least the first few weeks, even if it can't be continued for a long time. If breast-feeding is not your choice, or if it is discontinued before the baby's first birthday, commercially prepared infant …

Much of social welfare education in Australia is built upon the tried and tested knowledge bases developed within American and British approaches to social work and welfare provision. The experience of those two countries has dominated the theoretical frameworks for practice intervention and indeed, the analysis of social problems and societal responses to them. Australian experience has tended to play a supplementary role in that differences in context have altered or modified aspects of these overseas approaches, or some peculiar aspect of case experience has led to variations in response. The review and development of educational programs for social welfare …
