Towards A Flexible Learning Ecosystem In Philippine Tertiary Education, Robert C. Roleda, Ador R. Torneo, Raymond R. Tan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The Philippines has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a lockdown in an effort to suppress the spread of the disease. This measure has led to unprecedented disruption in many sectors of the economy. Educational institutions have similarly been affected. As schools are the ideal breeding ground for “super spreader” events, the suspension of face-to-face instruction is an important control measure from a public health perspective. Physical closures may need to be maintained even after the lockdown is eased. This situation poses a challenge on how to maintain the continuity of the Philippines’ human capital development during the pandemic.

In this short piece, we share our thinking and experience about our students’ psycho-social needs and our belief that faculty must be focused both on students’ and faculty’s socio-political context and students’ and faculty’s emotional wellbeing as we think about teaching and learning for this moment.

Covid Closing Down Colleges: How The Covid-19 Pandemic Accelerated Nonprofit College Closings, Patrick Baker, Paula Hearn Moore, Kaleb Byars, Christie Aden

Internal and external factors such as geographical challenges, lack of economies of scale, and unchecked board mismanagement have historically led to the closures. COVID-19 is accelerating the rate of these college closures. Diminishing enrollment, volatile endowments, and inoperable revenue programs are some of the reverberations the virus has caused.

Preventative measures need to exist to alleviate the risks of unforeseen crises in the future. Harsher penalties, increased scrutiny of automatic extensions, and more accurate and complete Form 990 disclosures will protect stakeholders …

Black Graduates Confront Another Crisis Amid Protests And Pandemic, Jazmin Goodwin Dec 2019

Black Graduates Confront Another Crisis Amid Protests And Pandemic, Jazmin Goodwin

Capstones

Black graduates confront another crisis amid protests and pandemic: Their optimistic expectations are now dashed and the result will be more inequality in America.

Much has been written about how among America’s workers, youth will suffer the greatest economic setbacks during the pandemic. Just like millennials who entered the labor force after the 2008 financial crisis, Generation Z will likely experience permanent declines in wealth, which will have ripple effects on their health and wellbeing. But those setbacks aren’t evenly distributed. Among young workers, Black youth will likely bear the largest burden.
