Tools And Community : How Women Become Researchers In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Karen L. Mccomas Jan 2010

Tools And Community : How Women Become Researchers In Communication Sciences And Disorders, Karen L. Mccomas

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is a female-dominated discipline in danger of losing its professional autonomy. In 2002, the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association (ASHA) reported that 6-7% of all faculty positions in CSD were vacant, predicted a substantial increase in vacancies through 2012, and declared the issue of faculty preparation as the "most significant threat to our [CSD] future" (p. 5). In 2008, ASHA reported that, although more people were receiving Ph.D. degrees, only half accepted positions in higher education. The purpose of this study was to extend understanding of the problem of too few researchers in CSD by increasing …

Neoliberalism And The Biophysical Environment: A Synthesis And Evaluation Of The Research, Noel Castree Jan 2010

Neoliberalism And The Biophysical Environment: A Synthesis And Evaluation Of The Research, Noel Castree

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

This article both synthesizes and critically evaluates a now large, multi-disciplinary body of published research that examines the neoliberalization of environmental regulation, management, and governance. Since the late 1970s, neoliberal ideas and ideals have gradually made their way into the domain of environmental policy as part of a wider change in the global political economy. While the volume of empirical research is now such that we can draw some conclusions about this policy shift, the fact that the research has evolved piecemeal across so many different disciplines has made identifying points of similarity and difference in the findings more difficult. …

A Few Steps Forward In The Process Of Looking Back: Setting Parameters For A Self-Study Of Administrative And Program Development Work Over 18 Years, Deborah Roose Jan 2010

A Few Steps Forward In The Process Of Looking Back: Setting Parameters For A Self-Study Of Administrative And Program Development Work Over 18 Years, Deborah Roose

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Most self-studies focus on an individual or several teacher educators. Although there have been self-studies undertaken by teacher education administrators, there is relatively little research available that focuses specifically on administrator’s program development work in teacher education. This self-study examines one teacher education administrator’s program development work over a period of 18 years and in two institutions. Data comes from entries from a professional journal/log kept during those years. A framework consisting of emergent categories and sub-categories was developed for analysis. Initial findings suggest there is a complexity of and multiple roles that are influenced by outside forces. In terms …

Digital Toolkits For Teachers, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan, Emma Thacker Jan 2010

Digital Toolkits For Teachers, Mark J. Hofer, Kathleen Owings Swan, Emma Thacker

Articles

Challenging students to create digital documentary films in history courses engages students in both mastery of content knowledge and higher order thinking experiences. Teachers considering this type of work must contend with the focus on standards- based testing, a wide breadth of content to be covered, the challenge of finding relevant primary source materials, and restrictions related to copyright and Fair Use. This paper explores a resource site for teachers, Digital Docs in a Box, that attempts to mediate some of these concerns and support their students in the creation of digital documentaries. First, we explore the rationale for student …

Vygotsky In Twenty-First-Century Research, Irina M. Verenikina Jan 2010

Vygotsky In Twenty-First-Century Research, Irina M. Verenikina

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

At the 2008 Ed-Media conference, a list of most often cited papers in Ed-Media 2004-2008 was revealed (Ochoa, Mendez & Duval, 2009). Vygotsky’s theoretical work, originally published in Russia in the 1930s, came top of the list by a large margin. This paper examines why, and how this theory still can be relevant to twenty-first-century research. It is argued that an effective use of modern educational technologies calls for the use of advanced pedagogies. Vygotsky’s theory provides a profound understanding of teaching and learning that reflect the complexity of social and cultural contexts in the modern learner. The most frequently …

Contract Research, Universities And The 'Knowledge Society': Back To The Future, Noel Castree Jan 2010

Contract Research, Universities And The 'Knowledge Society': Back To The Future, Noel Castree

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Many chapters in this book focus on contract research (hereafter CR), but mine differs from these in three respects. First, rather than focus on CR in its own right I want to situate it in a much wider landscape of knowledge production, circulation and consumption. My reason for doing so is simple: we cannot possibly form a view on the why and wherefore of CR unless we understand the broader epistemic context in which it currently exists. As we'll see, in this context CR appears as just one instance of a widespread shift to seeing knowledge as a means to …

Supervision Of Universal Basic Education Centers In Anambra State, Nigeria: Concept, Challenges And Prospects, Edho Genesis Jan 2010

Supervision Of Universal Basic Education Centers In Anambra State, Nigeria: Concept, Challenges And Prospects, Edho Genesis

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Supervision of schools in the UBE programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria is an aspect of quality control. It is bound with the efficiency of learning and improvement of the teaching/ learning services. Quality control of Basic Education centers is closely associated with a vital component of education (Monitoring & Evaluation). Today, ‘Quality Control’ is used more or less as a synonym for supervision or inspection which is within the comprehension of the wider segment of the educated publics. Instructional supervision in Nigeria began as a process of external inspection. In the 18th century, supervision was characterized by inspection …

Perceptions Of Teachers & School Leaders On Competencies Of Teachers & Training Needs, Sailesh Sharma Jan 2010

Perceptions Of Teachers & School Leaders On Competencies Of Teachers & Training Needs, Sailesh Sharma

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Government of Thailand recognizes the need of Human Resources Development of teaching professionals as a key to maintain standards of education at an internationally competitive level. Considering the large number of teachers currently in service whose expertise in new teaching and learning approaches will be critical in implementing the educational reform, it is surprising that very little work has been done in planning, developing and delivering training in new teaching and learning methods. The biggest impact of the teaching and learning reform rests with the teachers currently in the classrooms and yet little attention has been given to (a) developing …
