During Spring and Fall conferences of FLARR, since the Fall of 1994 (the organization holds joint meetings with MCTLC in the Spring), 159 presentations were were delivered. Of those talks, about one quarter were submitted to FLARR Pages and appear now in Volume #1. The journal articles are a sampling of the issues and concerns of the past decade. They represent, as do all the presentations (see Appendix A), the innovative ways in which faculty have responded to current demands and challenges of teaching, research, service, programming, and many other areas of professional life, both in the public schools and …

Thwarted Ambition: The Role Of Public Policy In University Development, Michael N. Bastedo
New England Journal of Public Policy
Paradoxically, Massachusetts is the home of a world-class system of private higher education and a struggling system of public higher education. The influence of private higher education and persistent indifference by state government repeatedly thwarted UMass’s ambition to increase its stature on the national scene. The result was a “boom or bust” cycle of financial support that made rational planning and institutional expansion extremely difficult, exacerbating the university’s late start toward world-class status.

Engaged And Engaging Science: A Component Of A Good Liberal Education, Judith A. Ramaley, Rosemary R. Haggett
Higher Education
We live in a period of rapid and complex socioeconomic change. The forces driving this change are reshaping the educational landscape in ways that we are only beginning to understand. Many recent reports and books, including the 2002 report from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College, have explored the implications of these changes and have identified growing gaps between the intentions and assumptions of faculty, the actual experiences of students, and the demands of the workplace. The lack of clarity of purpose in undergraduate education …

Transcending Disciplines, Reinforcing Curricula: Why Faculty Teach With Service Learning, Rudy M. Garcia, Gail Robinson
Higher Education
Service learning as a teaching methodology has a growing following among faculty in higher education. Service learning combines community service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in activities that address local needs while developing their academic skills and commitment to their communities.

The Tutor's Role In Propagating Blended Problem-Based Learning In Higher Education: A Case Study Approach, Roisin Donnelly
The Tutor's Role In Propagating Blended Problem-Based Learning In Higher Education: A Case Study Approach, Roisin Donnelly

It is argued in this thesis that it is vital to seek to develop e-learning teaching and learning strategies in higher education that support approaches with an emphasis on the innovative and cutting edge educational strategies related to education for sustainability. Education for sustainability should be learner centred and will require a significant shift for both academics and students alike. It is essential that all academics who are willing to engage in this process acknowledge that they too are learners and will need to reflect on their teaching and learning practice if we are to develop a truly sustainable global …

Shaping The Future: Strategic Planning For Small Colleges And Universities., Jamie Comstock, Rand Ziegler
Jayne Marie Comstock
This paper addresses the importance of strategic planning as a precursor to assessing organizational performance and outlines a change model that has been used successfully at a small college with limited resources. Grounded in extant executive planning processes, this new model demystifies the strategic planning process and establishes procedures that address the practical and logistical issues associated with facilitating a planning process and ensuring that the plan becomes a document that espouses realistic goals, inspires and motivates members of the campus community, and actually provides direction for departments as they create their work plans and allocate resources.

Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher
Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher
Level 3
Calls for sustaining and increasing investment in higher education are often made on the basis that higher education is a `public good'. The idea of higher education as a public good is frequently conceptualized in terms of its contribution to economic development. If more people participate in higher education then society as a whole will benefit.
Outside of the economic benefits of higher education there is less debate as to what is meant by `public good' in the context of higher education. This paper explores higher education as a public good and its role in realizing the public good ( …

Contemplating The Evolving Role Of The Tutor In Blended Problem Based Learning In Higher Education, Roisin Donnelly

A hugely important area in any form of face to face and PBL delivery is the role of the tutor; in an e-learning environment, it is even more crucial. The role of the tutor in blended PBL is both special and crucial for effective learning outcomes and enjoyable learning experiences for students in higher education. As an educational developer and tutor in higher education, whilst working with academic staff, I encounter issues in postgraduate modules that use blended problem-based learning delivery methods. IN this professional context, blended learning refers to a merging of classroom and online activities that must be …
Distance Learning Or Traditional Classroom Learning Preference Amongst Graduate Level College Students: A Case Study, Angela Criscoe
Distance Learning Or Traditional Classroom Learning Preference Amongst Graduate Level College Students: A Case Study, Angela Criscoe
The Corinthian
This research is a case study of distance learning performed at Georgia College & State University in the fall of 2004. In this study a survey was given to 16 students that were currently taking a masters accounting course via the distance learning format. The survey included questions that would help determine if graduate students preferred traditional courses to distance learning courses. The results indicated that students do prefer traditional courses and that there is no significant difference between the learning format preferred between males and females. Further results suggest instructor effectiveness with technology and may warrant to further research …
Opinions About Challenge By Choice Held By Undergraduate And Graduate Students In Outdoor Education Academic Programs At Georgia College & State University, Ryan L. Sharp
The Corinthian
A primary concern when discussing the concept of Challenge by Choice (CxC) is defining it and identifying how it is used. This study is a survey of students in the outdoor education academic programs at Georgia College & State University. The primary objective of the study was to compare graduate and undergraduate student opinions about the meaning and use of CxC. It was hypothesized that graduate students would have different opinions about the concept then undergraduate students. Twenty students responded to an eight item online survey. Data was analyzed using a chi-square test. No statistical significance at the alpha .05 …
