The Commonwealth-funded Project Good Start was a longitudinal study of children during their year before school and the first year of school, involving preschool centres and schools across Australia. It considered the questions: how can effective numeracy programs be identified at both year-before-school and the early years of school; and what constitutes evidence of effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of attending preschool on the first grade readiness skills of kindergarten students at Jasper County Primary School (JCPS ). Preschool was defined as a structured education program that serves children under school age. The Georgia Kindergarten Assessment ProgramRevised ( GKAP-R)( 1996) was used to determine academic achievement.

This study examines the socially constructed context of whole group storybook reading in pre primary classrooms. The study is centred in the shared communications that occur between pre primary teachers and students before, during and after the storybook reading. In particular, insights are sought on the nature and extent of the pre primary teachers' and the pre primary students' communicative contributions and the opportunity provided for the inclusion of personal knowledge and personal experience in the communication.
