Alabamans In East Tennessee: Letters From Confederate Soldiers Back Home, Dieter C. Ullrich

Between the summer of 1862 and the fall of 1863, tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers camped upon the hills and valleys near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Many of those men would write home of the sites and events they experienced. What follows are several letters that were recently found in the Auburn University archives located in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

Adult Esl Oral Reading Fluency And Silent Reading Comprehension, Kristin Lems

A descriptive study of second language adults studying ESL at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in a post-secondary academic program revealed that their oral reading fluency had a significant, low-to-moderate correlation with scores on a measure of silent reading comprehension. The correlation was slightly stronger for measures of accuracy than speed, and strongest for miscue ratio. The correlation increased as proficiency level increased. Among different first language groups, the correlation was highest for Hispanic learners, and lowest for Chinese. Furthermore, all fluency measures correlated better with a listening measure than with the silent reading comprehension measure. When a system …

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore

This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

In each of the years 1997, 1998 and 2000 a new cohort of course participants joined the two-year MEd programme at the Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development in Karachi, Pakistan (AKU-IED). Some two years later 87 or 92% of the entrants graduated from the programme and returned to their respective employers or systems. This paper focuses on the employment of and roles played by these 87 ‘completing’ course participants before they entered and then after they exited from the AKU-IED MEd programme. The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes among African American men concerning issues of retention at a predominantly white college. This study explains issues attendant to the problem of the low numbers of African American males in higher education. Furthermore, this study seeks to identify factors that are successful with keeping African American males in college. The methodology consisted of quantitative (surveys) and qualitative analyses (focus group interviews) that focused on the factors associated with the experiences of African American male college students (N=123). The purpose of the study is to explore the extent of student satisfaction with the Rowan University Recreation Center. A convenience sample of 151 students who frequented the recreation center was used to determine students' perceptions of the facility on a number of factors. The study showed that the recreation center rated higher than all other comparable student services both in importance to the student and satisfaction with the service provided. The recreation center was also very successful in terms of getting students involved, much more so than any other campus group or activity. The results showed that the recreation …

French has always been among the top foreign languages taught in the American university, even if Spanish occupies the first place. As a result of the social transformations of the 1960s and 1970s and the development of new fields of learning, changes were also introduced gradually into French department programs to include francophone literatures, although in a manner that some have deemed disturbing.

While literatures from Africa, the Caribbean and Québec have been taught in U.S French programs since at least the 1970s, the widespread incorporation of «francophone» literature and culture into all levels of the curriculum is a relatively recent phenomenon. Yet the organization of these heterogeneous fields under the umbrella of Francophone Studies has generated little discussion concerning the field’s definition and its relation to French Studies as a whole. This essay examines the category of Francophone Literature, arguing that it is no longer adequate for understanding today’s complex literary and cultural terrain.

I have found my schedule of responsibilities at Parkland has kept me so busy that it has been very difficult to adequately keep up to date in our fast changing industry. A Study To Determine How Many Person Hours Are Expended By Learning Consultants And School Psychologists To Complete An Evaluation From Initial Referral To Final Placement, Maria Mercedes Styron

This study was conducted in order to determine the number of hours that are necessary to complete an initial evaluation by a Learning Consultant and a School Psychologist. Surveys were distributed to a random sample of Learning Consultants and School Psychologists in South Jersey. The survey consisted of eighteen areas which are a part of an initial evaluation. Participants were asked to report the amount of time spent on each area in minutes. Fifty questionnaires were mailed out and 33 were returned. Of the completed questionnaires 15 were from School Psychologists and 18 were from Learning Consultants . Twenty six …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker

This study examined differences in student achievement on the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Mathematics Test by their teachers’ years-of-experience teaching mathematics. Data examined were mean scale scores of fourth and eighth grades in five sample groups: national (public and private school students combined), national public school students, and Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas public school students. These states were chosen because of their statewide systematic school reform efforts. The research question was: Are mathematics scores of students of more experienced mathematics teachers higher than those of students of less experienced teachers?
