The Effectiveness Of Day Reporting Centers In Reducing The Likelihood Of Probation Violations, Ryan E. Petroff Jan 2002

The Effectiveness Of Day Reporting Centers In Reducing The Likelihood Of Probation Violations, Ryan E. Petroff

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

The following research goals were established to guide the research and answer the problem: 1. Does intensive supervision provided by Day Reporting Centers reduce the likelihood of probationers violating their conditions of probation? 2. Is intensive supervision provided by Day Reporting Centers more effective in ensuring public safety then regular supervision? 3. Do violations of probation initiated by Day Reporting Centers result in more sentence revocations than violations of offenders on regular supervision? 4. Do special programs such as life skills and substance abuse counseling provided by Day Reporting Centers reduce recidivism?

Comparing Geometry 4x4 Block Scheduling With Geometry A/B Scheduling And It's Effect On Geometry Sol Test Scores, Daniel Rachid Jan 2002

Comparing Geometry 4x4 Block Scheduling With Geometry A/B Scheduling And It's Effect On Geometry Sol Test Scores, Daniel Rachid

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

To solve this problem, the following hypothesis was developed: 1. Students who complete the A/B Geometry class will have higher SOL scores on average than the students who complete the one-semester Geometry class.

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Course Delivery Models Through The Telequiz Protocol, A Study Of Web-Based Distance Assessment Modalities, Patrick Michael O'Shea Jan 2002

A Comparative Analysis Of Two Course Delivery Models Through The Telequiz Protocol, A Study Of Web-Based Distance Assessment Modalities, Patrick Michael O'Shea

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

Distance education and distance assessment have become the focus of many institutions of higher learning, and there is a need to know how these tools compare with those used in the traditional classroom setting. This study was designed to compare online and traditional students utilizing a mixture of quantitative and qualitative strategies in a quasi experimental model. This research was conducted at Old Dominion University using a sample of online and traditional students enrolled in an Introduction to Education course (ECI 300). Both versions of this course utilize an online quizzing protocol known as Telequiz. Quiz scores, final exam scores …

The Transfer Promise: An Investigation Of Impediments To Academic Success And Persistence In A Mid-Sized Urban University, Mary H. Duggan Jan 2002

The Transfer Promise: An Investigation Of Impediments To Academic Success And Persistence In A Mid-Sized Urban University, Mary H. Duggan

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

This study adapted and validated, for use with transfer students, an existing freshman survey instrument designed to identify patterns of noncognitive factors related to academic performance and persistence. This study also explored the transfer experience by combining a qualitative interview approach with that of a survey, thus developing a method to ascertain those transfer students who were at risk of attrition.

To identify noncognitive predictors, the researcher examined the percentage of transfer students in academic difficulty for every response to each of the 152 items on a Transfer Student Survey (TSS). Respondents were separated into 4 groups based on their …

Systemic Issues In Asynchronous Delivery Of Graduate Engineering Management Programs, Charles Keating, David Dryer, Andres Sousa-Poza, William Peterson, Robert Safford Jan 2002

Systemic Issues In Asynchronous Delivery Of Graduate Engineering Management Programs, Charles Keating, David Dryer, Andres Sousa-Poza, William Peterson, Robert Safford

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine systemic issues that impact the design, delivery, and maintenance of asynchronous engineering management educational products. Asynchronous education continues to rapidly evolve as an alternative to traditional classroom delivery. An asynchronous educational system requires the effective integration of technology, supporting processes, and infrastructure design to prepare, deliver, and maintain asynchronous educational products. Currently, the technological capabilities for delivery of asynchronous education have outstripped the ability to maximize those advanced technologies. To help understand this rift between technology and our ability to deploy that technology this paper examines three critical areas. First, the distinctions …

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Purpose. To assess the feelings of physicians about assisting female victims of intimate-partner violence (IPV), and to examine factors related to positive and negative feelings about assisting victims of IPV.

Method. In 1998, a total site sample of 150 physicians practicing in a large general hospital in the area of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was surveyed by questionnaire via the mail. Four specialties were represented: emergency medicine, family practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and psychiatry. The questionnaire asked about medical training and training in assisting victims of IPV The physicians' feelings about working with victims of IPV were measured on a nine-item, five-point …

An Instrument For Assessing Knowledge Gain In A First Course In Circuit Theory, Vishnu K. Lakdawala, Stephen A. Zahorian, Oscar R. González, Amit Kumar H., James Leathrum Jan 2002

An Instrument For Assessing Knowledge Gain In A First Course In Circuit Theory, Vishnu K. Lakdawala, Stephen A. Zahorian, Oscar R. González, Amit Kumar H., James Leathrum

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Although there has been considerable research on the development and use of assessment instruments to measure the effectiveness of various pedagogical approaches to teaching introductory physics classes (Hestenes et al. 1, Hestenes et al 2, Hake 3, Saul et al. 4) and other science courses (for example, see Vosniadou 5), there is relatively little similar work that has been done to develop assessment instruments for the first circuit theory course that is taught in electrical and computer engineering. Given the large numbers of students nationwide who take such a course, the challenge this course presents to beginning engineering students, and …

They Did Not Teach: Veterans' Experiences In A Mid-Career Transition Program At An Urban University, Joseph Franklyn Shipes Jan 2002

They Did Not Teach: Veterans' Experiences In A Mid-Career Transition Program At An Urban University, Joseph Franklyn Shipes

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This descriptive phenomenology examines the lived experiences of veterans who attempted a mid-career transition into teaching. The study identifies and describes experiences that led to the outcome decisions of 22 men who enrolled in a Military Career Transition Program (MCTP), completed a Master's Degree in Education, but did not become public school teachers. Self-descriptions of their experience were collected in multiple, open-ended interviews and analyzed using Moustakas's (1994) protocols.

Participants described a transition in four stages (a) preliminary conditions for change, (b) socialization and adjustment, (c) refocusing career goals, and (d) reflective assessment. Planning for career change began with ideal …
