This collection contains letters written by Harriet Sweetser, dated from 1898 to 1916, as well as some photographs. Most of the letters were written during her time as a student at Gorham Normal School, a teacher training college located on what is currently the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine. Almost all of the letters are addressed to her mother, with a few to her father. Sweetser writes home to tell her parents about her day-to-day life at school. She later taught at a grammar school in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine and became a superintendent. Harriet Sweetser was born on …

Successful Reading Program Marking 10th Year In Maine, Kay Hyatt

The Reading Recovery literacy program will mark its10th anniversary in Maine at a special conference Dec. 6-7 at the Samoset Resort and throughout the new year. The conference will feature some of the top educators nationally and in Maine presenting keynote addresses and workshops on major issues and developments in early literacy. In addition, a Greenville sixth grader will share a letter she wrote to her local school board about how the program has helped her succeed in school.

The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent, if any, an effective middle level summer school program, using Edmonds' (1979) five effective schools characteristics (e.g., educational leadership, emphasis on basic skills, high expectations, safe climate, frequent monitoring of student progress) enhanced students' academic achievement and change in attitude.

An Evaluation Of The Self-Esteem Of At-Risk Middle -Level Youth With Intervention Of The Mentorship Program, Lisa Marie Sterba

This study concentrated on the self-esteem of at-risk middle school students in a mid-west city involved in an alternative school Mentorship Program. This study examined two aspects of a structured mentorship program for at-risk youth attending an alternative middle school. The first purpose of the study was to evaluate the possible effect of the mentorship program on the self-esteem of the student, while the second purpose was to examine the perceptions of the program's participants. The first method was examined utilizing a quasi-experimental, design and the second employed a qualitative methodology. The Mentorship Program had 16 planned sessions to engage …

This case study was undertaken to provide a description of the Tennessee Performance Funding Policy's impact on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville over the past twenty years. Answers to three research questions were sought:

1. How has the Tennessee Performance Funding Policy impacted the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with regard to (a) awareness of the policy and its purposes and (b) the activities of the institution in relation to the policy?

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

The Oratorio Society performed Benjamin Britten's "St. Nicolas," with the graduate string quartet, a bass player, two pianos, percussion and an organ. Faculty member Fran Vogt the featured tenor soloist, was joined on vocals by a children's choir. The second half of the program included a selection of traditional Christmas carols, with piano accompaniment.
