Whole Language Teaching And Learning: Is It For Everyone?, Anne Crout Shelley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Beginning the formal study of music theory well into mid-life has enabled me to focus with new clarity on a gnawing concern. This concern, which has pursued me as I have walked with my undergraduate majors into the era of whole language, has two dimensions — both young children and novice teachers. The first concern is those particular young children, who when immersed in a print rich environment, fail to make the inductive leaps which allow them to become emergent readers (O'Donnell and Wood, 1992). My second concern is the early childhood and elementary preservice teachers who are so indoctrinated …

A Portrait Of A Reading Teacher, Barbara J. Griffin

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teacher knowledge is dynamic and experiential. It is both constructed and reconstructed daily as teachers live out their lives in and out of school (Clandinin and Connelly, 1991). Therefore, listening to teachers' stories can be a valuable avenue to gaining insights into the methods other teachers use to teach children to read. My goal is to share one teacher's story in such a way that readers will reflect on their own stories and examine their practices of reading instruction, their knowledge and beliefs, and how all these elements of teaching are interrelated. It is up to readers to take from …

Transactional Criticism And Aesthetic Literary Experiences: Examining Complex Responses In Light Of The Teacher's Purpose, Joyce E. Many, Jacqueline K. Gerla, Donna L. Wiseman, Linda Ellis

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In classroom literature discussions, teachers orchestrate situations in which readers and texts come together. Approaches teachers use may differ in terms of the stance or purpose for reading encouraged. Rosenblatt (1978, 1985) describes two stances readers can take while reading literary works. An efferent stance indicates a reader's attention is focused on information to be retained after reading and can result in a study of the text. An aesthetic stance, on the other hand, occurs when the reader's attention is on the livedthrough experience of the story and the experiences, thoughts, feelings, images, and associations which are evoked. Rosenblatt (1978, …

A Personal Approach To Counseling, Four Techniques Of Therapy, & Brief Therapy And Counseling, Charles William Hollis Dec 1995

A Personal Approach To Counseling, Four Techniques Of Therapy, & Brief Therapy And Counseling, Charles William Hollis

Graduate Theses

The field of counseling is a rapidly changing profession, and counselors, both new and old must learn to adapt to these changes. The counselor should decide on and maintain a basic theory of counseling, and yet not allow that theory to be so rigid that it fails to use some of the benefits from other theories when applicable. The counselor should learn to look at all sides of an issue before deciding what stand to take on that issue, and the stand should be one that inevitably is aimed at his/her enhancement as a counselor.

Intrinsic Motivation For Learning Of The Adult Graduate Student At Western Michigan University, Phyllis Crandall Dec 1995

Intrinsic Motivation For Learning Of The Adult Graduate Student At Western Michigan University, Phyllis Crandall

Dissertations

The perceptions of adult graduate students concerning barriers to the educational process and their levels of motivation for pursuing a graduate degree were investigated. The established motivational theory first expressed by Abram Maslow in 1954 was used in defining the first variable of motivation to learning when pertaining to the healthy self-actualized individual. The second variable chosen was a listing of student perceived barriers to the educational process as defined by H. G. Schulze in 1987. It was hypothesized that the higher the level of the barriers overcome per Schutze's scale, the higher the level of intrinsic motivation in the …

An Investigation Of Teachers' Beliefs Concerning Evaluation Procedures And Criteria And Their Willingness To Assume An Active Role In The Process, Terina Walker-Harvey

Dissertations

Teacher evaluation has received less than favorable reviews over the decades. Reports comment on the unsound practices, inappropriate assessment methods, and inadequate performance criteria. As a result, teachers in some cases come to view the process as ineffective and inadequate. This study hypothesized that (a) teachers who believe in evaluation hold different beliefs regarding evaluation specifics compared to those who disbelieve, (b) teachers who believe in evaluation and view professional development as the purpose for conducting evaluation hold different views regarding evaluation specifics compared to those who disbelieve and view personnel decisions as the purpose for evaluation, and (c) those …

The Acceptance Of Computers By Administrative Leadership At Baker College, William Mccormick Luczyk

Dissertations

Procedures for recording information, capturing data for distribution to faculty, students, and other campuses was often being done manually by administrators at Baker College. Because of either a lack of access, or a lack of knowledge and training, simple computer data searches, spreadsheets, and telecommunications were difficult to accomplish and in some cases could not be done by Baker College administrators.

The sample population for this research consisted of forty-six males and forty-seven females for a total of ninety-three existing Baker College administrators, from nine campuses of varying size, throughout the State of Michigan. Data in the areas of computer …
