The Struggle For Black Studies At Howard University, Johnnie L. Ware Dec 1972

The Struggle For Black Studies At Howard University, Johnnie L. Ware

Honors Theses

Booker T. Washington provided for the masses and their economic plight in his thinking, but neglected the cultural-political theory, and the creation of a black intelligentsia. W.E.B. DuBois, on the other hand, directed attention to the intelligentsia, and cultural-political theoretics, but, in his early and most famous approach, failed to provide sufficiently for the masses. Possibly as a consequence of historical circumstances - the location of most blacks of that day in the South and the irreconcilable mores of segregation - neither developed theoretics for invating white colleges.

this was left to the more recent years, when the early advocates …

Phonetics, Traditional Grammar, And Transformational Grammar, Lois Kirkpatrick Dec 1972

Phonetics, Traditional Grammar, And Transformational Grammar, Lois Kirkpatrick

Honors Theses

As a Music Major, I chose to study for my honors project, three facets of grammar that would be helpful in teaching public school music. These areas are phonetics, which will aid in the correct pronunciation of words used in singing and speaking, traditional grammar, which is essential for both oral and written communications, and a study in the new tranformational grammar, to keep abreast with changing grammatical skills. Though somewhat related, these skills are best discussed separately.

A Method For Surveying Literacy In Minority Languages In Mexico, Steven T. Egland

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a testing method for surveying the literacy needs of minority language groups in Mexico. The tests were designed to determine the approximate percentage of adults in a given Mexican Indian town who can read and write in Spanish and in their own Indian language. The reading tests allowed subjects to be classified according to their abilities.

The tests were intended to improve on some previous studies of literacy in minority language groups outside of the United States. As the tests designed by this investigator were used in three language groups of Mexico …
