This project intends to examine the effectiveness of California Polytechnic State University’s (“Cal Poly’s”) current student requirements on the subject of intimate partner violence. The existing mandatory training is meant to inform students on the prevalence of intimate partner violence and advise them on prevention and intervention techniques. The research in this project explores a broad contextualization of intimate partner violence from a social and historical perspective, which intends to explore the possibility that students may be more likely to internalize the significance of the information if such context was included in the training model. The following study focused on media coverage of the socioeconomically disadvantaged student population at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA and its immediate surrounding community. Specifically, this study pointed out the gaps in the existing coverage and it looked for ways to fill in those gaps. This study examined how student affairs professionals, especially those in cultural centers, could increase campus diversity and inclusivity. More specifically, it sought to find a theoretical basis for social justice education programs that could increase campus climate. It was performed as a single site case study at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Three Cal Poly student affairs professionals were interviewed for qualitative data which were then compared and analyzed with the literature surrounding campus diversity and inclusivity. The silo effect creates boundaries and separation within parts of a larger organized entity. In order to overcome the silo effect, the entity must seek holistic ways to unite the parts. This paper addresses the need for a collective that serves students from all three concentrations in Cal Poly’s journalism department: news editorial, public relations, and broadcast. The collective, Poly Press Association, will feature student work, and provide comprehensive tutorials, internship opportunities/ratings, and student blogs. The Poly Press Association aims to help eliminate any boundaries between the three concentrations.
