The “Other” Teacher: Understanding The Experience Of Graduate Teaching Assistants In Neoliberal Teacher Education Settings, Jing Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
In this study, I critically examine how graduate teaching assistants’ (GTAs’) experiences are discursively shaped by the exercise of power in neoliberal higher education contexts and hence, to reveal the hidden aspects of educational institutions, which are central to our understandings about the meaning of truth, fairness, and equity embedded in neoliberal academic settings. To understand the experiences of graduate teaching assistants in this neoliberal teacher education setting, the major research questions of this study explore how the different identities that GTAs possess influence their interactions with the neoliberal higher education context and how they navigate as well as resist …
Comparison Of Minnesota Teachers’ Sex Education Instructional Practices With Professional Preparation And Development, Lisa Brichacek
Comparison Of Minnesota Teachers’ Sex Education Instructional Practices With Professional Preparation And Development, Lisa Brichacek
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Nationally, many health teachers have not received health education training. Minnesota does not require sexual health training or sexual health professional development for health education teachers. School Health Profiles 2018 data was analyzed to determine who teaches sexual health education in Minnesota, what they teach, how they teach it, and their desired future professional development. Teachers who received pre-service health education training were compared with teachers who received other pre-service preparation. Additionally, teachers who received sexual health professional development were compared with teachers who did not receive sexual health professional development. Data analyses included crosstabs with Phi and Cramer’s V …

The Use Of Differentiated Instruction By Teachers Of The Columbia Union Seventh-Day Adventists, Jennifer Jill Bianco
Dissertations
The Problem
Teachers in the Columbia Union of Seventh-day Adventists were provided training in differentiated instruction training during the summers of 2013-2016. However, there were no formal follow-up communications to report or to share their experiences with implementing the newly learned method of instruction. The purposes of this study were (a) to describe the teachers' beliefs and levels of practice of differentiated instruction after completing the training; (b) to determine if there are differences in beliefs and practice; and (c) to describe methods of support for implementation of differentiated instructions.
Method
This study used a mixed-method design. The quantitative section …

Teacher As “Team Player”: An Early Career Teacher’S Refinement Of Critical Pedagogical Discourses, Keisha-Moraé Hopkins Kibler
Teacher As “Team Player”: An Early Career Teacher’S Refinement Of Critical Pedagogical Discourses, Keisha-Moraé Hopkins Kibler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
This study centers on one early-career English language arts (ELA) teacher’s development of his critical pedagogical discourses (CPD) within the contextual discourses of collaboration and data informed instruction. These contextual discourses circulated assumptions of teaching and learning that are privileged by the political ideologies of the neo-liberal agenda, which can erode the democratic purposes of education. Data is drawn from an eight-month interpretive qualitative case study that included classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The two research objectives for this study included: to come to understand the range of ways an early-career ELA teacher navigated the tensions between his belief and …
Teacher Scaffolds During Word Solving In The Context Of The Interactive Strategies Approach-Extended (Isa-X) Intervention, Mary Elizabeth Arcidiacono
Teacher Scaffolds During Word Solving In The Context Of The Interactive Strategies Approach-Extended (Isa-X) Intervention, Mary Elizabeth Arcidiacono
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Research has shown that reading intervention which incorporates word identification strategy instruction can help struggling students improve their reading ability (e.g., Gelzheiser, Scanlon, Vellutino et al., 2011; Scanlon, Gelzheiser, Vellutino et al., 2008; Vellutino, Scanlon, Small, et al., 2006). Since poor readers have benefited from interventions which include direct instruction of word identification strategies, my research focused on word identification strategy instruction; specifically, this study examined the types of scaffolds teachers provided to readers as they practiced being strategic word solvers while reading. This study compared the in-situ conversations between teachers using the Interactive Strategies Approach – Extended (ISA—X, Gelzheiser …

Recalibrating Our Moral Compass: How America's Narrowing Value System Is Erasing Lgbtq+ People In Schools, Andrew Levalley
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This thesis bridges the effects of society—meaning politics, policies, norms, and values—and school on LGBTQ+ students. Paramount educational philosophers, namely Dewey, Freire, Berliner, and Illich, understood that schools are a reflection of the communities they serve. I apply this common philosophy to the LGBTQ+ community to uncover the systems of inequalities that have negative effects on LGBTQ+ youth in order to promote better systems that include both LGBTQ+ youth and the larger LGBTQ+ community. To illustrate the effects of society and school on the LGBTQ+ community and youth, I use traditional peer reviewed researched data, current events that showcase America’s …
A Critical Examination Of Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Liberatory Pd, Christine C. Moore
A Critical Examination Of Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Liberatory Pd, Christine C. Moore
Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to develop an understanding of secondary teachers’ perceptions of liberatory (justice-oriented) professional development at three school sites in a single school district. As participants shared their perceptions, three significant themes emerged; they described 1) facing contextual constraints that limited their agency 2) desiring to be reframed as knowledge producers, yet 3) struggling to envision how their agency could support their liberation. These key findings led to an emergent theory of the Cycle of Professional Development Stagnation, a cycle involving barriers that perpetuate the framing of teachers as passive recipients of knowledge. As evidenced in this qualitative …

Inside Collaborative Communities: Teachers' Perceptions Of The Collaborative Process, Pamela Ann Evors
Inside Collaborative Communities: Teachers' Perceptions Of The Collaborative Process, Pamela Ann Evors
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand teachers’ perceptions of the collaborative process and how it affected their classroom practices. The research question was “What are the perceptions held by experienced public elementary-school teachers in a large urban school district in the southeastern United States regarding the collaborative process in their school settings?”
The research design used semi-structured, in-depth interviews with a specific group of public elementary-school teachers who had extensive professional development and experience with the collaborative process, either in co-teaching settings or in frequent collaboration with colleagues. Using the process of educational criticism (Eisner, 1998) …
Factors Predictive Of Self-Efficacy In First Year Teachers, Jessica Leigh Hamelin
Factors Predictive Of Self-Efficacy In First Year Teachers, Jessica Leigh Hamelin
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research demonstrates that there are increased teacher burnout rates within the first 5 years of entering the field (Darling-Hammond, 2003; Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2010; Yost, 2006). Consistent with those findings is that teacher preparation matters when conversing about recruitment and retention (Brown, Lee, & Collins, 2014). As more research is conducted in the area of teacher preparation it has become clear that teacher effectiveness is directly related to preparation (Darling-Hammond, 2010). As teachers enter their first-year teaching, philosophical stances can change, inflated beliefs about the teaching profession can be altered, and self-efficacy is influenced. Drawing from Hoy and Spero’s (2005) …
Teacher Perceptions On How To Best Support Student Well-Being In Elementary Classrooms, Elanna Beth Derby
Teacher Perceptions On How To Best Support Student Well-Being In Elementary Classrooms, Elanna Beth Derby
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Elementary schools should be adept at assisting students in meeting their mental health need, such as, providing a non-violence approach to conflict resolution; strengthening the students’ relationships with their family members and friends; taking responsibility for their education and future; creating a stronger positive image; handling tough times more effectively; and setting and achieving their goals in life. The purpose of this Q methodology was to explore what teacher perspectives are on how to best support student well-being in the elementary school classroom. Specifically, this study examined what factors emerged when faculty in a large urban school district …

The Impact That Student’S Homelife Have On Their Ability To Achieve Success In School, Annmarie T. Umland
The Impact That Student’S Homelife Have On Their Ability To Achieve Success In School, Annmarie T. Umland
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The homelife of an adolescent has a profound impact on their ability to find success in school. Students who come from a family that is made up of a single parent, divorced parents, homelessness, and some other non-traditional family configurations are more likely to be unsuccessful in school and develop unwanted psychological adjustments. This research explores how a student’s homelife affects their success in school from the views of both a traditional and non-traditional family type. It also focuses on the impact that teachers and school communities can have on a student’s success, regardless of their upbringing. Through this research, …
Co-Teaching In The Inclusive Math Classroom, Kylie Marie Kallman Moore
Co-Teaching In The Inclusive Math Classroom, Kylie Marie Kallman Moore
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examined various aspects of co-teaching math in inclusive classrooms. Research has shown varying results on the effects of student achievement for general education students and students with special needs in co-taught math classes. School-based differences may have an effect on these outcomes and should be examined further. Continued efforts to provide students with special needs the least restrictive environment for learning, ongoing co-planning, co-assessing, and reflection are key components for a successful co-teaching pair. Additionally, administrators should recognize the role they play in helping teachers’ planning efforts. Using a combination of the six models of co-teaching with …
The Socialisation Of Early Career Principals In Western Australia, Simon Fittock
The Socialisation Of Early Career Principals In Western Australia, Simon Fittock
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This research aimed to investigate and understand the socialisation of early career principals in Western Australian public schools. It is widely acknowledged that school principals are critical in the successful education of students and delivering on this is seen to be the core purpose of the role. It is evident that the development of effective principals has great value. As a result, the socialisation of principals during the formative early career stage, whereby they learn the necessary knowledge, skills and understandings of the role, is important in the educational experiences of students. Due to the impact principals have on student …
The Perceived ‘Classroom Readiness’ And Support Of Western Australian Primary Graduate Teachers, Samantha Jade Edwards
The Perceived ‘Classroom Readiness’ And Support Of Western Australian Primary Graduate Teachers, Samantha Jade Edwards
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Graduate teachers are expected to be ‘classroom ready’ upon graduation, yet research suggests they are not. The difficulties faced by graduate teachers in their first years of teaching often result in low self-efficacy and attrition, which in turn can affect the achievement of their students.
Since its establishment in 2010, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) have implemented a competency framework for both teachers and Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers, aimed at improving not only all teacher quality in Australia, but the quality of ITE, graduating teachers and the support structures provided to them. This research project …
The Viability Of Simulated Large-Scale Marking As Professional Development For Preservice Teachers, Nathanael Reinertsen
The Viability Of Simulated Large-Scale Marking As Professional Development For Preservice Teachers, Nathanael Reinertsen
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Judging the quality of student work is a core skill of a proficient teacher. This professional competency is often utilised by organisations that run large-scale marking operations when they recruit teachers as markers. These organisations and the teachers themselves often claim that large-scale marking is valuable professional development.
This research aimed to determine whether professional learning outcomes similar to those reported by experienced teachers can be achieved for preservice teachers through participation in a live simulation of a large-scale marking operation. The research was conducted in three phases: an online survey of Australian teachers to establish that reports of benefit …
Deschooling Deficit Perspectives: An Exploration Of Culture And Place For Educators, Madison Dorschutz
Deschooling Deficit Perspectives: An Exploration Of Culture And Place For Educators, Madison Dorschutz
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The purpose of this critical action research is to increase awareness of deficit perspectives that damages the academic outcomes of diverse students while offering approaches to address them. Theories of decolonialism, culturally responsive pedagogy, and place-based education will be discussed as they are able to pull back the raciallyinformed curtain of bias development. These theories come together in a 4-day series of workshops that seeks to inform educators of their damaging thinking in an effort to negate it before they enter their classrooms. Through reflection, cultural-perspective taking, and relationship building, educators can gain skills to acknowledge systems of oppression that …
