Getting Ready: Promoting School Readiness Through A Relationship-Based Partnership Model, Susan M. Sheridan, Christine Marvin, Lisa Knoche, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
School readiness is determined by the life experiences of young children between birth and enrollment in formal education programs. Early intervention and education programs designed to promote school readiness often focus on skills a child fails to demonstrate that are believed to be of importance to social and academic success. The Getting Ready model of early childhood intervention (Sheridan, Edwards, & Knoche, 2003) recognizes the transactional nature of young children’s development and the important role parents play in pre-school readiness and school-age success. In the Getting Ready model, collaborative partnerships between parents and professionals are encouraged to promote parent’s competence …
The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane
The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane
Articles
There is a wealth of international research on the transition from preschool to school from a range of perspectives. Following on from such research, the issue of transition is emerging as an important new construct in early childhood care and education (ECCE), with a transition-to-school framework replacing the construct of school readiness as a focus of research interest. There has been limited research into transition practices in Ireland and this study is the first comprehensive research looking at this area from an Irish perspective1. Phase I of this study involved conducting a questionnaire on the transition from preschool to formal …

A Good Start To Numeracy : Effective Numeracy Strategies From Research And Practice In Early Childhood, Brian Doig, Barry Mcrae, Ken Rowe
A Good Start To Numeracy : Effective Numeracy Strategies From Research And Practice In Early Childhood, Brian Doig, Barry Mcrae, Ken Rowe
Student learning processes
The Commonwealth-funded Project Good Start was a longitudinal study of children during their year before school and the first year of school, involving preschool centres and schools across Australia. It considered the questions: how can effective numeracy programs be identified at both year-before-school and the early years of school; and what constitutes evidence of effectiveness. This report provides a review of the international and Australian research literature on numeracy in early childhood that complements the Department of Education, Science and Training’s major review of the numeracy literature undertaken by Deakin University. It is designed to provide early childhood professionals and …

Some scholars who emphasize the heritability of intelligence have suggested that compensatory preschool programs, designed to ameliorate the plight of socioeconomically or otherwise environmentally impoverished children, are wasteful. They have hypothesized that cognitive abilities result primarily from genetic causes and that such environmental manipulations are ineffective. Alternatively, based on the theory that intelligence and related complex human behaviors are probably always determined by myriad complex interactions of genes and environments, the present meta-analytic study is based on the assumption that such behaviors can be both highly heritable and highly malleable. Integrating results across 35 preschool experiments and quasi-experiments, the primary …

Promoting Collaborative Learning In The Early Childhood Classroom: Reggio Emilia, Italy, And Amherst, Massachusetts., Carolyn P. Edwards, Lella Gandini, John Nimmo
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This chapter describes a study that was conducted in Reggio Emilia (Emilia Romagna, northern Italy), Pistoia (Tuscany, Italy) and Amherst (Massachusetts, USA) as part of a three study project investigating how teachers promote collaboration and community in their classrooms. The methodology involved a combination of teacher interviews with an adaptation of the “multivocal video-ethnography developed by Tobin, Wu, and Davidson (1989) for Preschool in Three Cultures. This paper describes the findings from the Collaboration Interviews with teachers in Reggio Emilia and Amherst, showing intersections and differences in their concepts of young children’s capacities for cooperation and teachers’ roles in …
Creating Safe Places For Conflict Resolution To Happen, Carolyn P. Edwards
Creating Safe Places For Conflict Resolution To Happen, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The context of the preschool classroom provides an opportunity to help children learn cooperation, joint problem solving, and positive social behavior. To think about such a classroom context, it is helpful to explore 3 dimensions of the environment: the intellectual atmosphere (Is this a safe place to think and wonder?) the moral atmosphere (Am I important here? Does my participation count?) and the community atmosphere (Do these people care about me? Do i care about them?)

Creative Learning: A Curriculum For Preprimary Children. Unit 8, Dinosaur Era And Fossils, Marjorie L. Oelerich, Jean Peterson, Elizabeth J. Sandell
Elementary and Literacy Education Department Publications
DINOSAUR ERA AND FOSSILS is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried, how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will have opportunities to formulate ideas, to …
Health At The Preschool Ages, Hubert Stanley Coffey
Health At The Preschool Ages, Hubert Stanley Coffey
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
The preschool child is the forgotten child of our health programs. When the community undertakes a health program of a preventive kind such as vaccination or health examination, too frequently it is limited to those children attending the public schools. Here the children are assembled and it is easier to carry out any specific health measure. The public health nurse or official may more easily identify diseases among these children. Because of their close association, epidemics among children are thought more dangerous and are more easily coped with. But such measures are just as urgently needed with the preschool child.
