Wku International Student Teaching Program: Professional, Cultural, And Character Impacts On In-Service And Pre-Service Teachers, Meghan F. Althauser
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This project focuses on researching the effects of participation in WKU’s International Student Teaching Program on in-service and pre-service teachers. The program’s effect on teachers’ professional decisions made in the classroom and attitudes toward diversity in the classroom were the focus of this research. A mixed method approach of in-service teacher questionnaires and interviews, pre-service teachers interviews, and analysis of blogs/journals from in-service and pre-service teachers while they were abroad was used in this project. The results of the project have illustrated the benefits, as well as the professional, cultural, and character developments of participating in the WKU International Student …

Recent developments in the use of technologies in education have provided unique opportunities for teaching and learning. This paper describes the results of a survey conducted at Western University (Canada) in 2013, regarding the use of media by students and instructors. The results of this study support the assumption that the media usage of students and instructors include a mixture of traditional and new media. The main traditional media continue to be important, and some new media have emerged as seemingly on equal footing or even more important than the traditional forms of media. Some new media that have recently …

Massive Open Online Courses And Mission: A Qualitative Study Regarding Matching Mooc Opportunity With Mission Statement, Tara L. Waln-Lewellyn
Massive Open Online Courses And Mission: A Qualitative Study Regarding Matching Mooc Opportunity With Mission Statement, Tara L. Waln-Lewellyn
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the first offering in 2008 (Fini, 2009; Liyanagunawardena, Adams & Williams, 2013), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been a phenomenon in higher education. While much research has been conducted on activities and experiences within these courses, little research from an administrative standpoint has been completed (Liyanagunawardena, et al., 2013). This qualitative case study examined the use of the mission statement in a committee’s determination whether or not to implement a MOOC at a Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States. Interviews were conducted with committee members, transcribed, and analyzed. Analysis determined that the mission statement did …

There is a major education problem in South Carolina. According to a 2014 article provided by the American Legislative Exchange Council, which ranks every US state based on student performance in a nationally administered exam, Vermont ranks first and South Carolina last. Enrolling kids in Pre-schools to prepare them to enter grade school is a very important step in the learning process, yet many parents do not enroll their kids in any schooling before Kindergarten. The purpose of this project is to locate different pre-school programs in Greenville, South Carolina, and analyze various factors which could reveal why certain areas …

Multiple intelligences theory of Howard Gardner are used as a foundation of research in order to explain how educating students of all learning styles should include interdisciplinary methods and creative applications. Primary and secondary research of Howard Gardner’s theory and interdisciplinary methods, specifically the Integration Model and Broad Model approaches were completed. Two different lesson plans demonstrating how to teach students integrating two disciplines while including creativity were generated as examples of thesis. Qualitative research on creativity and motivation identified connection between the two and why interdisciplinary methods enable more possibilities of adding creativity to lessons taught. Advantages include reaching …
