The Lived Experience Of Online Educators: Insights From Construction Management, William Sher, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote

Maria Northcote

Academics in higher education institutions often experience the conflicting demands of teaching, research and administration. With the growth of online education these staff are frequently required to design, develop, teach, facilitate and, in some cases, administer online courses. Cumulatively these additional tasks challenge academics, not only in terms of the personal professional development but also in accommodating the range of tasks expected of them. This paper reports the findings of a study which investigated the lived experience of construction management academics teaching at universities in Australia. The study adopted a lived experience research approach that enabled the lives of construction …

Learning And Teaching Effectiveness In The Digital Age: A Case Study From A Pacific Tertiary Education Provider, Kerwin A. Livingstone Jun 2014

Learning And Teaching Effectiveness In The Digital Age: A Case Study From A Pacific Tertiary Education Provider, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

The last few decades have seen the dramatic increase in online education in different parts of the world, at different universities. Such a change has been necessitated due to the changing scenes in tertiary learning and teaching, the need to offer students more meaningful options, and the need to embrace student learning diversity. Technology-based education, rightly designed and implemented, provides students with sound educational experiences. The aim of this study is to give a panoramic view of how an online programme is run at one of New Zealand’s Polytechnics, the Open Polytechnic. With this information, all current and prospective online …

The Merchants Of Moocs, James Grimmelmann Jan 2014

The Merchants Of Moocs, James Grimmelmann

James Grimmelmann

A loose network of educators, entrepreneurs, and investors are promoting Massive Open Online Courses as an innovation that will radically disrupt higher education. These Merchants of MOOCs see MOOCs' novel features—star professors, flipped classrooms, economies of scale, unbundling, and openness—as the key to dramatically improving higher education while reducing its cost. But MOOCs are far from unprecedented. There is very little in them that has not been tried before, from 19th-century correspondence courses to Fathom, Columbia's $25 million dot-com boondoggle. Claims of disruption look rather different when this missing context is restored. This essay examines some common arguments about what gives …

Using Ethnography To Understand Twenty-First Century College Life, Constance A. Iloh, William G. Tierney

Constance Iloh

Ethnography in the field of postsecondary education has served as a magnifying glass bringing into focus university culture and student life. This paper highlights the ways in which ethnography is especially useful for understanding more recent dynamics and shifts in higher education. The authors utilize existing literature to uphold the relevancy of ethnography, while exploring its opportunities for research on adult students, online education, and for-profit colleges in particular. They conclude with methodological recommendations and directions for both qualitative research and higher education scholarship.

Promoting And Evaluating Online Learner-Instructor Relationships, Yanghee Kim, R Burdo, T Chen Jan 2014

Promoting And Evaluating Online Learner-Instructor Relationships, Yanghee Kim, R Burdo, T Chen

Yanghee Kim

Emotions that a learner brings to the learning context can influence engagement, self-regulation, and achievement. Recently, researchers have called for examination on the impact of learner emotions in online learning environments. This study examines how to incorporate learner/instructor relationship aspects in online instruction and promote affective relationships with the learners. Participants enrolled in a college statistics course took a weeklong video-based module covering Normal Distribution. Learner attitudes, learner self-efficacy, learner/instructor relationship, and learning gains were evaluated. The relationship building strategies were found to have positive impacts on learner attitudes and self-efficacy. The inclusion of the relationship building strategies, however, did …

Modeling Spiritual Formation From A Distance - Paul's Formation Transactions With The Roman Christians, Benjamin Forrest Mar 2013

Modeling Spiritual Formation From A Distance - Paul's Formation Transactions With The Roman Christians, Benjamin Forrest

Benjamin Forrest

This article proposes that Paul’s letter to the church in Rome can identify processes involved
in offering a spiritually formative education from a distance. When Paul wrote the letter to
Rome, he wrote to a church he had never visited. We argue that his relationship with the recipients is
analogically similar to the relationship between professor and student in an online, educational paradigm.
Paul modeled how to offer this spiritually formative relationship by emphasizing the gospel
message, grounding his scriptural authority, personalizing his message, anticipating questions, enlisting
the community, encouraging the recipients, praying for needs, and explaining the marks of …

Applied Learning In Online Education: A Comparative Study Employing Deal Critical Reflection, John R. Fisher, Margaret Mittelman Dec 2012

Applied Learning In Online Education: A Comparative Study Employing Deal Critical Reflection, John R. Fisher, Margaret Mittelman

Dr. John R. Fisher

This article stretches the boundaries of the meaning of applied learning to include online learning activities. The DEAL model of critical reflection was used to obtain student feedback in comparing two delivery strategies of an upper- division online leadership capstone course. Student reflection comments were analyzed for offerings of the course in summer and fall semesters. The fall delivery of the course adopted an applied reading summary strategy which required students to specifically apply their learning to their work and career plans. The DEAL model of critical reflection provided rich qualitative data evaluating teaching approaches and suggested students preferred applied …

Assessment For Learning: An Outcomes-Based Approach To Enhance Learning, Ian R. Mcandrew, William Muldoon, Indra R. Sinka Oct 2007

Assessment For Learning: An Outcomes-Based Approach To Enhance Learning, Ian R. Mcandrew, William Muldoon, Indra R. Sinka

Ian R. McAndrew

This paper draws on two case studies from UK universities to advance debate regarding assessment
strategies and methods in the ERAU Worldwide. It focuses on the use of summative and formative
assessment, the role of feedback, and the importance of learning outcomes for continuous academic
improvement. Findings from the first case study, with three cohorts of graduate students, show that,
where students are encouraged to learn from their mistakes via formative feedback, improvement is
more likely than when standard approaches to assessment are employed. The second case study
identifies one university's approach to changing the design, delivery and assessment of …

Promoting Learner-Learner Interactions Through Ecological Assessments Of The Online Environment, Evelyn S. Johnson Jun 2007

Promoting Learner-Learner Interactions Through Ecological Assessments Of The Online Environment, Evelyn S. Johnson

Evelyn S. Johnson

As the number of learners engaging in online education increases, a growing body of literature is developing to recommend best practices for instructors. Typically, these recommendations are oriented to a particular aspect of interaction based on Moore’s (1989) extended framework, to include learner-instructor; learner-learner; learner-content; learner-interface interactions, with a recent emphasis on the importance of learner-learner interactions. However, online instructors and learners operate within a complex environment in which many aspects can have a direct impact on the instructor’s ability to facilitate learner-learner interactions. If online education providers and instructors hope to successfully adopt practices to promote learner-learner interaction, an …
