Researchers, policymakers, and administrations have shown great concern over the efficacy of college remediation, which has prompted some states to eliminate remedial programs from public 4-year institutions. However, research suggests that eliminating these programs may have unintended consequences on college access and opportunity for underrepresented minority students, particularly African Americans. This study explores the impact of a remedial program on 11 African-American male students at a public 4-year historically Black institution. This paper presents some of the benefits of using learning contracts by some in the USA who have used them for many years, and others in Italy who had never used them, but were beginning to experiment with using them. Illustrations of results were provided by colleagues from both countries, comparisons were made between the two, and lessons learned from the experience were shared. There remains a lack of agreement in the field of science education as to whether student “misconceptions” ought to be considered obstacles or resources, and this has implications for the ways in which prospective teachers think about the value of their students’ ideas. This empirical study examines how fourteen preservice secondary science teachers in four different science teacher preparation programs interpreted the rationale for eliciting student ideas. The findings indicate that the preservice teachers in this study showed an increase in recognizing the importance of student ideas, yet not all took the same view of their role and value in …

A Productive Dialogue: Contemporary Moral Education And Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucian Ethics, Stephen C. Angle

The essay asks whether contemporary Western empirical studies of moral education, as exemplified in the distinctive research programs of Lawrence Kohlberg and Martin Hoffman, can enter into productive dialogue with the Neo-Confucian theories of Zhu Xi (1130-1200). The proposed dialogue proceeds in two stages. I begin with Zhu’s notion of “lesser learning” and the role therein of ritual, and consider their relations to Kohlberg’s ideas about the construction of moral rules and Hoffman’s findings concerning parental discipline (and particularly “induction”). Multiple studies have shown the strong predictive power of high school grade point average (HSGPA) in forecasting future academic performance outcomes. However, the methods for calculating HSGPAs vary among schools, with some employing weighted methods in their calculations and others using unweighted scales. Due to these inconsistencies, it is often difficult to compare HSGPAs across high schools. This study involved the coding of 551 high school transcripts of pre-med college students in Texas. Unweighted HSGPAs were then calculated for each of these students on a standard 4.0 scale. Three multiple regression models were then created for the students with complete …

Student-Initiated Linguistic-Based Feedback Versus Process-Oriented Feedback In Foreign Language Writing, Melanie C. González, Alison M. Youngblood, Elizabeth Giltner

A qualitative case study of three introductory French as foreign language classes at a university observed and analyzed the content of student-initiated interactions with the instructor to determine if students’ requests centered more on linguistic or process-oriented issues in writing. Afterwards, we used semi-structured interviews to gain insight into student perceptions of the efficacy of the feedback they requested during the workshop. Results revealed a prevalence of student-initiated language-based questions during the class and an overall satisfaction with the oral corrective feedback they received.

In this qualitative phenomenological study, we sought to explore the life experiences of 7 rural gifted individuals who dropped out of school. In addition, we investigated whether participants shared commonalities that might have led to the phenomenon of dropping out. The problem was that a paucity of research exists about gifted dropouts; subsequently, no one had asked our participants to share their stories prior to the present study. The Role Of Institutional Agents And Social Capital In The Experiences Of Minority College Students, Samuel D. Museus, Kathleen Neville

This study focuses on the characteristics of institutional agents who can and do facilitate racial minority student success by providing them with access to social capital in college. Individual semi-structured interviews with 60 Asian American, Black, and Latino undergraduates reveal that key institutional agents who positively influence those participants’ success and provide them with access to social capital share four common characteristics: They (a) Share common ground with those students, (b) provide holistic support for those students, (c) humanize the educational experience, and (d) provide proactive support for those students. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

This paper reports a study of the sources from which these ideas are originated, and the corresponding role each source plays in the process of designing. In predominantly White school settings, where African Americans are distinctly
in the minority in the student (and faculty) population, African American
students need a buffer from racial politics. Research has found that while
the best learning varies in many public and private schools, racial stress
remains problematic for Black students from preschool to college education
settings (Advancement Project, 2005; Arrington, Hall, & Stevenson, 2003;
