"Diamond In The Rough:” The Impact Of A Remedial Program On College Access And Opportunity For Black Males At An Historically Black Institution, Robert T. Palmer, Ryan J. Davis
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Researchers, policymakers, and administrations have shown great concern over the efficacy of college remediation, which has prompted some states to eliminate remedial programs from public 4-year institutions. However, research suggests that eliminating these programs may have unintended consequences on college access and opportunity for underrepresented minority students, particularly African Americans. This study explores the impact of a remedial program on 11 African-American male students at a public 4-year historically Black institution. Findings illuminate the importance of college remediation in promoting college access and opportunity for underprepared Black male students, and how remedial programs increase academic and social integration for these …
Research On The Use Of Learning And Degree Contracts Within University And Other Settings In Italy And The Usa, John A. Henschke Edd
Research On The Use Of Learning And Degree Contracts Within University And Other Settings In Italy And The Usa, John A. Henschke Edd
John A. Henschke
This paper presents some of the benefits of using learning contracts by some in the USA who have used them for many years, and others in Italy who had never used them, but were beginning to experiment with using them. Illustrations of results were provided by colleagues from both countries, comparisons were made between the two, and lessons learned from the experience were shared. There is a very different perspective between using them over a long period of time and just beginning to use them. However, the keenest insight is that they are beneficial at each stage along the way, …

The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher
The Need For Fire Service Professional Development, R. Jeffery Maxfield, John R. Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
The importance of fire and emergency services professional development standards has never been more apparent than during the last few years. With the events of September 11, 2001, the need for improved leadership in the emergency services has become evident. The International Association of Fire Chiefs has introduced a professional development standards model, based on a definition of professional development, which is “the planned, progressive life-long process of education, training, self-development, and experience” (IAFC, 2003). Their standard recognizes that emergency response training activities are more prevalent in the early stages of a career and that organizational skills grow with a …

Gifted Dropouts: Phenomenological Case Studies Of Rural Gifted Students, Fred Milacci, James Zabloski
Gifted Dropouts: Phenomenological Case Studies Of Rural Gifted Students, Fred Milacci, James Zabloski
Fred Milacci
In this qualitative phenomenological study, we sought to explore the life experiences of 7 rural gifted individuals who dropped out of school. In addition, we investigated whether participants shared commonalities that might have led to the phenomenon of dropping out. The problem was that a paucity of research exists about gifted dropouts; subsequently, no one had asked our participants to share their stories prior to the present study. By searching for meaning in their individual and combined stories, we uncovered two overarching themes related to their decisions to drop out: the Influence of Relationships (with the subthemes, relational traumas, and …
The Role Of Institutional Agents And Social Capital In The Experiences Of Minority College Students, Samuel D. Museus, Kathleen Neville
The Role Of Institutional Agents And Social Capital In The Experiences Of Minority College Students, Samuel D. Museus, Kathleen Neville
Kathleen Neville
This study focuses on the characteristics of institutional agents who can and do facilitate racial minority student success by providing them with access to social capital in college. Individual semi-structured interviews with 60 Asian American, Black, and Latino undergraduates reveal that key institutional agents who positively influence those participants’ success and provide them with access to social capital share four common characteristics: They (a) Share common ground with those students, (b) provide holistic support for those students, (c) humanize the educational experience, and (d) provide proactive support for those students. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Future Capability Of Education To Embrace The Knowledge Economy, David Lynch, Rebecca Deagan
Future Capability Of Education To Embrace The Knowledge Economy, David Lynch, Rebecca Deagan
Professor David Lynch
The 2000 epoch is known as the Knowledge Economy and there has been much written about its impact on society. Despite many calls for systems of education to change to better reflect this fundamentally different socioeconomic circumstance, it appears the traditional classroom/ schooling regime prevails. With these points in mind this chapter examines the Knowledge Economy using a theoretical framework that makes explicit the implications for schools and teachers.
Legal Consciousness And Lgbt Research: The Importance Of Law In The Everyday Lives Of Lgbt Individuals, Nancy J. Knauer
Legal Consciousness And Lgbt Research: The Importance Of Law In The Everyday Lives Of Lgbt Individuals, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
The law occupies a prominent place in the everyday lives of LGBT individuals, and the continuing regulation and policing of sexuality and gender weighs heavily on many people who identify as LGBT. Despite remarkable progress in the area of LGBT civil rights, LGBT individuals in the United States still lack formal equality and are denied many of the protections that are afforded other historically disadvantaged groups. These legal disabilities represent an ongoing source of minority stress and can produce a correspondingly high degree of “legal consciousness” within the LGBT community. Given the importance of law in LGBT lives, it is …
