The underachievement, lack of inclusion, and backward progression of African American men within American society, and particularly within the educational arena, has once again surfaced as a trend that demands immediate attention. Effects Of Two Versions Of An Empathy-Based Rape Prevention Program On Fraternity Men’S Rape Survivor Empathy, Rape Myth Acceptance, Likelihood Of Raping, And Likelihood Of Committing Sexual Assault., John D. Foubert, J. T. Newberry

Fraternity men (N = 261) at a small to midsized public university saw one of two versions of a rape prevention program or were in a control group. Program participants reported significant increases in empathy toward rape survivors and significant declines in rape myth acceptance, likelihood of raping, and likelihood of committing sexual assault. Program participants’ scores significantly differed from an untreated control group in several areas. Implications for describing a male-on-male rape to increase men’s empathy toward female survivors and other related attitudes are discussed.

In light of post 9/11/01 realities, we studied the need for retooling crisis management plans on college campuses. A review of the literature, expert interviews, and document analysis yielded several promising practices to be included in recommended guidelines for crisis management plans.

Examining Productive Conceptions Of Masculinities: Lessons Learned From Academically Driven African American Male Student-Athletes, Brandon E. Martin, Frank Harris

Conceptions of masculinities among African American male student athletes are considered in this article. Grounded in the social constructivist perspective and guided by the phenomenological qualitative research tradition, individual interviews were conducted with 27 academically driven African American male student- athletes attending four Division I universities. Findings suggest that the participants embrace a wide range of productive gender-related attitudes and behaviors that are uncommon among male college student-athletes. Implications and recommendations are offered for coaches and university administrators charged with working with African American male student-athletes.

The Voice Of Reason: A Qualitative Examination Of Black Student Perceptions Of Their Black Culture Center, Lori Patton Davis

Black Culture Centers (BCCs) represent safe and welcoming spaces for Black students at predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). Resulting from the Black Student Movement of the 1960s, BCCs have become institutional mainstays that provide services and programs to the entire campus community. This study examined Black students' perceptions of the Institute of Black Culture at the University of Florida. The discussion and implications provide an in-depth understanding of the historical, current and future role, and mission of BCCs, as well as insights on the importance of BCCs as PWIs strive to better serve the needs of Black students.

The lead author questioned over 500 self-identified gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) fraternity and sorority members to assess their reasons for joining; how their membership affected their sexual identity development and intimate relationships; the degree of homophobia and heterosexism encountered; how sexual orientation affected the quality of their fraternal experiences; and the level of acceptance or rejection they faced. Many respondents were in the early phases of sexual identity development at the time they joined, and most chose to conceal their sexual orientation from their fellow members. A racially mixed random sample of 247 students at a midsized public university in the Southeast completed the Student Development Task and Lifestyle Inventory at the beginning of their first year, beginning of their sophomore year, and end of their senior year (Winston, Miller & Prince, 1987). Results showed partial support of Chickering and Reisser’s theory of development in that students progressed in their development along three measured vectors throughout their college career. Results contradicted the assumption that developing purpose is a vector experienced only toward the end of one’s college career. This qualitative study investigated contextual influences involved in college student identity development. It examined events, experiences, and relationships that alumni suggest either nourished or thwarted their perceptions of multiple dimensions of their identity during college. Findings suggest that self-perceptions of identity often change as a result of the emotions experienced by individuals in reaction to various contextual influences.

Student affairs administrators representing four types of institutions were interviewed to determine the role that religio-spirituality plays in their professional lives. Results reveal that most desire more freedom to express this aspect of their identity in that it has a salient impact in how they work with students. However, several reasons are given for the reluctance of many to freely express their religio-spirituality with their colleagues.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to analyze the dimensions and manifestations of identity development embedded within commonly used instruments measuring student identity development. To this end, a content analysis of ten identity assessment tools was conducted to determine the assumptions about identity development contained therein. Findings suggest the importance of determining and assessing all dimensions and manifestations of identity development.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate possible gender differences in the nature and role of the contextual influences (events, experiences, and relationships) that shape multiple dimensions of identity during college. Fifteen college alumni used lifelines to document their identity-shaping experiences during college; two interviews were conducted with each of these alumni. Findings suggest the existence of gender differences in the following areas: types of contextual influences that shape identity during college, reactions to those contextual influences, and attributions of salience to various identity dimensions.

This paper presented lessons I learned from a study of fraternity advising. It summarized the major themes I found in a qualitative study of seven successful fraternity advisors who worked with seven successful fraternity chapters on seven difference campuses. The work was focused on finding a model of excellence with which to generate guidelines for advising college fraternities at the chaper level.
