Shades Of Gray: The Nuances Of Telling Among Elementary Preservice Teachers In The Mathematics Classroom, Montana Smithey Oct 2021

Shades Of Gray: The Nuances Of Telling Among Elementary Preservice Teachers In The Mathematics Classroom, Montana Smithey

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) often prepare preservice teachers (PSTs) to teach in ways they may not be familiar—including facilitating conversations that are responsive to children’s mathematical thinking (Robertson et al., 2016). Specifically, MTEs support PSTs in understanding what it means to take on the mathematical work for children and ways children can engage in sense-making (Baxter & Williams, 2010; Wood, 1998). Telling, a teaching move that can be used to take on the mathematical work for children, is often used by PSTs (Moyer & Milewicz, 2002). Thus, MTEs focus PSTs learning of more productive teaching moves such as exploring details …

The Power And Purpose Of Choice In Digital Teacher Education, Aimee M. Cribbs Oct 2020

The Power And Purpose Of Choice In Digital Teacher Education, Aimee M. Cribbs

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

With the call for critical thinkers and problem-solvers, primary and secondary educators are encouraged to use student-driven instruction and performance-based assessment. At the same time, teacher education programs often include lecture-based delivery with formal papers as the primary form of assessment. The changing landscape of virtual learning in the era of Covid-19 provides an opportunity to refine teacher education to mirror the same research-based practices suggested for primary and secondary classrooms. Within a participatory action research model, this author shares the experience of delivering an online graduate-level curriculum design course framed in student choice. Education Specialist candidates chose content and …

Teacher Education Faculty And The Edtpa: A Phenomenological Perspective, Lance Kilpatrick Apr 2017

Teacher Education Faculty And The Edtpa: A Phenomenological Perspective, Lance Kilpatrick

Scholar Week 2016 - present

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of university faculty expected to implement a teacher performance assessment called edTPA within a teacher preparation program. This study synthesized the experiences university faculty members have when preparing and implementing the edTPA. A deep examination of 12 university faculty members who teach in teacher preparation programs in a Midwestern state where the edTPA is required for licensure offer their experience through a questionnaire, an individual interview, and a focus group interview. The data were collected, organized, and analyzed by employing transcendental phenomenological systematic data analysis procedures positioned to …

Special Educators Describe The Critical Mass Of Co-Teaching, Cynthia T. Shamberger, Kendra W. Henriques Oct 2014

Special Educators Describe The Critical Mass Of Co-Teaching, Cynthia T. Shamberger, Kendra W. Henriques

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Co-teaching is an instructional approach usually initiated by school administrators to help general and special education teachers who share a single classroom to ensure students with disabilities have access to the general curriculum. Although research regarding co-teaching is still in need of further development in some areas such as student achievement, co-teaching has increasingly grown in popularity as an option for addressing the multiple needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities. Some school professionals and researchers who are proponents of this instructional delivery model believe that, "At the core of co-teaching is determining what instructional techniques will be most …

Paper 4: Do You See What I See? Deepening Teachers’ Understanding Of Linear Equations Through Student Interviews, Tamara Pearson, Kelli Nipper, Catherine Matos Jan 2014

Paper 4: Do You See What I See? Deepening Teachers’ Understanding Of Linear Equations Through Student Interviews, Tamara Pearson, Kelli Nipper, Catherine Matos

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference

Many teachers have trouble transitioning their students between natural recursive thinking about the data and algebraic notation for representing linear functions (Zazkis & Liljedahl, 2002).

In this study, we interviewed eighteen middle school students to see how they used prior instruction to think about a geometric pattern and construct its corresponding linear equation. All students

were given the same task to complete and were questioned about their thinking during the interview.

We found that the recording of pattern recognition plays a substantial part in helping students recognize and write explicit patterns. By having students decompose the total perimeter into how …

The Need To Teach Civility In Ece Classrooms, Michael Borders, Donna Borders Mar 2012

The Need To Teach Civility In Ece Classrooms, Michael Borders, Donna Borders

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)

Methods for the teaching of civility to teacher education candidates—the why, what and how—are premised on the current societal need to emphasize altruistic behaviors. Survey results from 120 teacher candidates and 120 clinical supervisors within an eight- county Georgia area will be exhibited along with research literature reviews, lesson plans, and pre- and post-test data analyses.

Paper 2: The Mathematical Preparation Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly W. Edenfield Jan 2007

Paper 2: The Mathematical Preparation Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly W. Edenfield

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference

In the summer of 2007, a group of doctoral students at the University of Georgia gathered to discuss the mathematical preparation of secondary teachers. The group used Mathematics for High School Teachers: An Advanced Perspective by Usiskin, Peressini, Marchisotto, and Stanley (2003) as the catalyst for the discussion. Participants agreed that future teachers need opportunities to examine high school and college mathematics differently from the way they had as students, with specific emphasis on connections, representations, and history. Features of this text that were highlighted in the discussions were the attention topics with commonly held misconceptions, the historical rationales and …

What’S Happening In Your Teacher Education Program?, C. Gloria Heberley Aug 2000

What’S Happening In Your Teacher Education Program?, C. Gloria Heberley

International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference

Six questions are presented, the answers to which will enable program administrators to gain valuable insights to their current or proposed teacher education program. Consideration of program aspects as perceived by participants at all levels can assist in the planning of appropriate interventions to mitigate complications. The questions were used in a recent study of the alternative vocational teacher education program at Temple University, known as VITAL. Responses to the questions revealed a cluster of themes that converged to form a concept identified as “generative” leadership. Generative leadership appears to be a major influence in the success of that program. …
