Patterns In Color Perception, Madeline Henson, Taimur Iftikhar Apr 2019

Patterns In Color Perception, Madeline Henson, Taimur Iftikhar

Student Symposium

Synesthesia is a neurological condition that forces individuals to process a lot of different senses at once. These different senses can be stimulated by anything; for example, if one hears some sounds, they might also perceive those sounds as colors and vice versa. Another form of Synesthesia, termed Grapheme-Color Synesthesia, can occur when one looks at different characters in a language and they see different colors generated in their brain. The amount of colors a person sees by looking at different characters varies. Our goal for our project was to figure out how different languages stimulate different neurological senses for …

Exploring The Relationship Between Connectedness And Language Acquisition For Middle School English Language Learners, Kasey Johnson Mar 2018

Exploring The Relationship Between Connectedness And Language Acquisition For Middle School English Language Learners, Kasey Johnson

Scholar Week 2016 - present

This study explored the relationship between middle school English Language Learners (ELLs) and their level of connectedness to family, friends, school, and self. The purpose of the quantitative study was to determine if significant correlations occurred between middle school students’ level of English language acquisition and their reported level of connectedness to family, friends, school, and self. The study focused on ELL students enrolled in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade at four middle schools located in a Midwest school district. The researcher placed the one hundred and twenty-six participants into three categories based on archived reading scores. The same …

The Language Of Non-Normative Sexuality And Genders, Emily Bolam, Samantha Jarvis May 2016

The Language Of Non-Normative Sexuality And Genders, Emily Bolam, Samantha Jarvis

Scholars Week

This project is about how asexual, intersex and transgender identities challenge normative ideas about what it means to be human. Our research primarily focused on how language used in the medical community influences societal perceptions of non-normative identities. Western culture is pervasively heteronormative, meaning that there is a narrow idea of what constitutes a “normal” human being, which is typically heterosexual and limited to a binary gender system. While society is making strides with accepting non-hetero sexual identities, there persists the notion that humans are inherently sexual beings. Asexuality, an orientation characterized by a lack of sexual attraction, challenges this …

Toward An Understanding Of Faculty Perceptions About Factors That Influence Student Success In Online Education, Michael Porter Sep 2015

Toward An Understanding Of Faculty Perceptions About Factors That Influence Student Success In Online Education, Michael Porter

South Florida Education Research Conference

This paper explores factors that faculty perceive as significant in influencing student success in online education. Technological support, degree of comfort with technology and a student’s personal characteristics were deemed by faculty as critical to success. Understanding these key factors could help to improve student success in online education.

Se Puede Y Se Debe: Educating Heritage Students, Edward Pinto, Itzia Luna, Isaac Meza May 2014

Se Puede Y Se Debe: Educating Heritage Students, Edward Pinto, Itzia Luna, Isaac Meza

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

Teaching heritage students requires a wide variety of best practices that focus on the development of the students’ vocabulary, cultural competence, and grammar, in addition to the four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). I will focus on the best practices of encouraging students to read many genres, providing a range of writing topics, assigning oral interviews with the community, and granting students the freedom to speak both English and Spanish in the classroom. Another effective teaching strategy for heritage language learners is using a macro-approach.
