Determined To Graduate: How Active And Enrolled Nontraditional College Students Define Persistence And Success In An Accelerated Degree-Completion Program, Nereida Quiles-Wasserman

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this mixed method study was to discover how active and enrolled nontraditional college students (NTSs), who are generally described as being over 24 years of age, defined persistence and success in an accelerated degree-completion program at a northeast liberal arts college. Additionally, this study sought the students’ experiences of the institution’s specific accelerated degree programs (ADP) and how it addressed the barriers the NTSs encountered. The methodology for this mixed method study involved data collection through a survey of 48 descriptive questions with opportunities for additional comments from the participants through 10 open-ended questions. A Preliminary Investigation Of The Comparative Expectations Of Parents Of Children With Autism And Chairpersons In The Committee On Preschool Special Education (Cpse) And/Or Committee On Special Education (Cse) Process, Kimberly A. Ganley

Education Doctoral

This qualitative study explored the underlying beliefs of parents who have children with autism and chairpersons of the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)/Committee on Special Education (CSE). Specifically, beliefs that promote trust and diminish conflict were of primary interest, as high rates of litigation were well documented with this group of parents in the United States. The theory of defensive reasoning (Argyris, 1999) was the lens used to analyze the dynamic. The themes identified provide insight into the promotion of trust and the reduction of conflict at the CPSE/CSE. The findings revealed two distinctly different expectations within the parent …

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the relationship between the archetypes of vertical structure and chief diversity officers’ (CDOs) perceptions of their performance in facilitating transformational change. This study also sought to examine CDOs’ perceptions of their institutions’ commitment to inclusive excellence and CDOs’ perception of their performance in facilitating transformational change. Semistructured interviews were conducted with nine CDOs, who were employed by the State University of New York system, to identify under which model the CDOs were working, using the archetypes of vertical structure, either collaborative, unit-based, or portfolio-divisional. Data was analyzed by reviewing audio …

The Lived Experiences Of Academically Successful Undergraduate Black Males In Stem Disciplines At A Predominantly White Institution, Sharitta F. Gross

Education Doctoral

This qualitative, interview-based study was designed to capture the success strategies of 10 academically successful Black males within the junior or senior years undergraduate education, who were enrolled in a STEM program within a predominantly White institution. Results suggest that although academically exceptional, the lack of ethnic diversity amongst faculty and their peer group influenced the academic experience(s) and confidence levels of study participants. Further, the results imply that a sense of belonging is so key to thriving academically that among implanted success strategies is the development of peer groups and seeking mentors from academic departments other than their own. …
