The use of online homework systems that require the purchase of an access code has become widespread. The purpose of this study is to examine student experiences with and perceptions of online homework systems with access codes. Postsecondary students (N = 966) completed a survey about the financial costs, perceptions of quality, engagement with, and learning with online homework systems. Most students (79.5%) indicated that they had been required to purchase an access code for an online homework system. Of those who had been required to purchase an access code, 29.4% reported their grade was hurt because they could …

A racially diverse sample of Introductory Psychology students (n = 32) completed a semester-long open pedagogy assignment focused on improving diversity depicted in photographs in psychology textbooks. Students first did a content analysis on racial and gender diversity within a popular openly licensed Introductory Psychology textbook (i.e., an open educational resource [OER]) and found that White presenting men were overrepresented. Then, for each broad topic in the course, students shared a topic-relevant photograph they had taken with the purpose of improving the diversity of textbook content. Students assigned these photographs Creative Commons (CC) license. Because the openly licensed textbook also …

Social Annotation: What Are Students’ Perceptions And How Does Social Annotation Relate To Grades?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Social annotation is a teaching and learning technique in which students post comments on electronic course materials in a shared space. The purpose of this study is to examine students’ perceptions of social annotation in the context of motivation and social justice. In addition, the connections between social annotation and course grades were examined. Students in a face-to-face course engaged in social annotation on their course textbook and completed a questionnaire on their perceptions (N = 41). Based on the findings, students had higher overall motivation for social annotation compared with quizzes. In contrast, comparisons of motivation between social …

Are Scientific Memes Motivating And Does Public Sharing Affect Motivation?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly
Are Scientific Memes Motivating And Does Public Sharing Affect Motivation?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
In recent years, renewable assignments, or student creations that have value outside of a course, have received considerable attention. However, there is little theoretically grounded inquiry into students’ motivation for renewable assignments such as scientific memes. Moreover, it is unknown how public sharing of renewable assignments affects students’ perceived value and learning from coursework. In addition, public sharing could logically affect students’ pride and anxiety related to the renewable assignment, but this lacks empirical testing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of public sharing of renewable assignments on students’ perceived value, learning, pride, and anxiety relevant …

Using Social Annotation To Enhance Student Engagement In Psychology Courses, Julie Lazzara, Virginia Clinton-Lisell
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Increasing engagement in asynchronous online courses is a goal for many college instructors. While discussion boards have been used in the past, social annotation is an alternative that may have multiple benefits for instructors and students. Students from an introductory psychology course (two sections) and a developmental psychology course (one section) used Perusall for social annotation with open educational resources. Over the semester, on average, students submitted quality annotations and more than what was required. Students also reported predominantly favorable perceptions of social annotation via a survey using both Likert scale and open-ended items. These findings are suggestive of student …

Open Pedagogy: A Systematic Review Of Empirical Findings, Virginia Clinton-Lisell
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Open licensing used in open educational resources allows for teaching and learning practices that are not possible with traditional copyright. There is a growing body of empirical research on open pedagogy. However, definitions and instantiations of open pedagogy vary in the literature. The purpose of this review was to systematically search and synthesize empirical findings on open pedagogy. In this, the definitions of open pedagogy across empirical reports were examined. Generally, open pedagogy was defined in the context of open licensing affordances; however, there were exceptions particularly when examining faculty experiences with open pedagogy. Synthesized findings may be used by …

Interactive Features Of E-Texts’ Effects On Learning: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Ben Seipel, Staci Gilpin, Christine Litzinger
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
E-texts afford interactive features that are not feasible with paper texts. Several studies have been conducted examining interactive features of E-texts, but it is uncertain what the overall effect is or what features may be most useful. The purpose of this study is to systematically review and meta-analysis of the findings comparing reading performance and/or reading times between E-texts with interactive features and control texts (paper or static E-texts). The systematic search of the literature identified 26 independent studies on reading performance. Based on the meta-analysis, interactive features benefited reading performance (g = .66, p < .001). Individual studies with positive effects involved multiple interactive features; however, potential contributions of three types of features (questions with feedback, digital glossaries, and collaborative tools) are discussed. Future directions for examining interactive features experimentally to better understand what features are most helpful for whom are described.

Evidence And Rationale For Expanding The Views Of Nature Of Science Questionnaire, Ryan Summers, Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, Jeanne Brunner
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
In an attempt to understand nature of science (NOS) conceptions held by learners in greater detail, researchers have steadily become more reliant on open-ended measures. The Views of Science Questionnaire (VNOS) is the most frequently used open-ended instrument. Conceptually grounded in many of the same aspects emphasized in the Next Generation Science Standards, the VNOS-C is appropriate for capturing the views of secondary school students and adults along 10 dimensions related to NOS. However, it has been observed that the 10-item VNOS-C seems to have difficulty uncovering some particular NOS aspects, or rather respondents may need additional prompting. Two new …
