The present study examined the technical adequacy of maze-selection tasks constructed in 2 different ways: typical versus novel. We selected distractors for each measure systematically based on rules related to the content of the passage and the part of speech of the correct choice. Participants included 262 middle school students who were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 maze formats. Scoring of the maze included both correct and correct-minus-incorrect scores. Students completed 3 criterion-reading tests: the Scholastic Reading Inventory, the AIMSweb R-Maze, and a high-stakes state assessment (the Missouri Assessment Program). Alternate-forms reliability was similar across maze formats; however, …

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications
Background
Although cardiac mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with heart failure (HF), this is a complex syndrome with two predominant etiologies, ischemic HF (iHF) and non-ischemic HF (niHF), and the exact impact of mitochondrial dysfunction in these two distinct forms of HF is unknown.
Methods and results
To determine the impact of HF etiology on mitochondrial function, respiration was measured in permeabilized cardiac muscle fibers from patients with iHF (n = 17), niHF (n = 18), and healthy donor hearts (HdH). Oxidative phosphorylation capacity (OXPHOS), assessed as state 3 respiration, fell progressively from HdH to niHF, to iHF (Complex I + …

The Impact Of Collaboration On Clinical Practice In Teacher Education: A Pilot Study, Christina L. Wilcoxen
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This article shares one university’s work with two metropolitan districts to support preservice teachers during clinical practice through the use of a common language. The pilot merged the concept of co-teaching and coaching to the clinical practice experience. The study was completed over a year’s time and connected preservice teachers’ last methods class placement to their clinical practice placement. Preservice teachers participating in this pilot were paired with a cooperating teacher for an entire year as opposed to a semester experience. Preliminary findings yielded a positive outcome.

Fathers Speak: The Lived Experiences Of Fathers Of Adolescents With Autism Regarding Transition Planning For Their Children, Stathene Varvisotis
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This phenomenological interview study was an examination of the lived experiences of seven fathers of adolescent sons with autism spectrum disorders as they transitioned out of school and into the postsecondary environment. The study was not created to deal only with fathers of sons; this population was coincidental. The purpose of the study was to gain insight into the fathers’ experiences and to determine whether commonalities existed within each father’s unique circumstances. A survey was considered, but discounted because of the need for more personal information from the participants. Data were collected through interviews with the participants. Analysis of the …

Use Of Student Perceptions To Measure Voice Disorders Course Impact On Learning, Amy Wilson Teten, Shari L. Deveney, Mary J. Friehe
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Speech-language pathology (SLP) graduate programs offer coursework and clinical training experiences for a wide variety of communication disorder areas. Voice disorders are one area in which many practicing clinicians, particularly school-based practicing clinicians, reportedly feel a lack of professional competency. Many SLP graduate programs offer only limited coursework in voice disorders and limited or no clinical practicum experiences prior to degree completion. The purpose of the present study was to compare the self-perceptions of 45 graduate students majoring in speech-language pathology at the beginning and end of a 3-credit voice disorders course. The Voice Disorders Competency Checklist (Teten, DeVeney, Friehe, …

Semiotics: Notes On English To Mathematical Language Translation, Elliott Ostler
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
The manuscript at hand is a presentation relating the processes and notation of mathematics to the processes and notation of standard written English. Semiotics is introduced as a way to describe the similarities in the processes and goals of both systems as methods of communication. The discussion of semiotics falls within three categories: 1) examining the parallel structures of written language and mathematics, 2) defining the language based nature of mathematical symbols, notation, and processes, and 3) exploring misconceptions between mathematical versus standard written vocabulary and notation.

Exploring The Effectiveness Of The Gradual Release Of Responsibility On Graduate Teacher Education Candidates' Self-Efficacy With Ipads, Wendy Loewenstein
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Many educational institutions struggle to keep up with technological innovations in order to engage students and prepare them to be competitive in the workforce. Those given the charge to prepare future teachers (undergraduate students) and continue the education of current teachers (graduate students) feel this pressure even more, because of the impact teacher colleges has on teacher quality in K-12 schools. Technology integration is an overwhelming task for educational leaders that extends beyond which technological device to purchase, Consideration must be spent on what pedagogical approaches are effective when implementing technology. Due to the increase of popularity of mobile technology, …
The Redirect Behavior Model And The Effects On Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy, Victoria Lentfer, Bridget A. Franks
The Redirect Behavior Model And The Effects On Pre-Service Teachers' Self-Efficacy, Victoria Lentfer, Bridget A. Franks
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
The ability for a novice teacher to confidently address inappropriate behavior has a substantial impact on student achievement, teacher attrition, and the reduction of bullying instances (Allen, 2010; Marzano, 2003). Classroom management plays a critical role in the success of the student as well as the teacher. The authors propose an intervention that potentially may have considerable impact on a novice teachers’ confidence regarding classroom management. The idea of providing guidelines for novice teachers to implement while redirecting student behavior could perhaps impact self-efficacy with classroom management. This paper describes the implementation of the Redirect Behavior Model with pre-service teachers …

The Place For Dual Enrollment In College To Career Readiness, Phyllis K. Adcock, Kelly M. Gomez Johnson, Ferial Pearson
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
Since high school achievement has reached permeation in American society today, a college degree is becoming the new norm in the level of education that is needed for a sufficient standard of living desired by most people. Studies indicate pre-college experiences are key to the transition to college and completion of a degree. Although high school GPA was the gauge of later success in college, it has been found there is more to college and career readiness than GPA indicates. Students must be educated in developing the necessary skills in college admissions procedures, financial aid and scholarships, and the disposition …

Predictability Of Hiring Mechanisms For Elementary Teachers, Troy Juracek
Student Work
This study focused on hiring the best teachers to determine if the use of commercially available teacher selection mechanisms resulted in hiring teachers having a greater impact on reading achievement. There is substantial research related to the use of interviews for teacher selection (Mertz, 2010). However, limited research exists reviewing commercial interview protocols with improvement of academic achievement (District Administration, 2015). There was a significant main effect comparing reading achievement outcomes between Title 1 and Non-Title 1 building and there was a significant relationship between applicant screeners. The district has effective selection mechanisms, inclusive of the HUMANeX protocols; however, the …
