A comprehensive, public university, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNOmaha) is located in the heart of Nebraska's largest city. Situated on 88.5 acres and surrounded by beautiful parks and residential neighborhoods, the University is easily accessed by three of Omaha's main arteries: Dodge Street, 72nd Street and 60th Street. The Peter Kiewit Institute of Information Science, Technology and Engineering is located on a 70-acre parcel of land at 67th and Pacific streets. Each is connected to the interstate system circling Omaha.

Three-Year Longitudinal Service-Learning Research Study: Preliminary Findings, Frank D. Aquila, L. Richard Bradley, Jennifer Dodd, Charlotte Jones-Ward

Using an experimental design, this study examines the contributions of service-learning to decreased at-risk behaviors, student cognitive, social, and personal development, and academic achievement over a three-year period. During the pilot phase and Years One and Two, teachers and students from eleven different Ohio schools have been surveyed. Preliminary findings are presented.

Welcome to the Community History/Environmental Citizenship (CHEC) teacher guide, which is designed to engage students in historical inquiry as part of environmental service-Iearning projects. CHEC materials are a key part of a larger Earth Force Program called Community Action Problem Solving (CAPS). CHEC materials are designed to help students understand:
• how past events affect present environmental issues
• how local environmental challenges have been addressed in the past
• how historical context can help them to effectively address today's environmental problems

What is Service-Learning?

Service-Learning is a partnership among students, faculty, and community organizations. Service-Learning projects:
• are conducted in and meet the needs of a community;
• help foster civic responsibility;
• are integrated into and enhance the academic curriculum of the students enrolled; and
• include structured time for students to reflect on the service experiences.

Civic Engagement In The First-Year Experience: Developing Civic Literacy, Jody L. Neathery-Castro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Students often misinterpret civic engagement strategies as an alternative to political action and civic participation. This essay argues that urban universities should integrate aspects of politics into civic engagement in order to link civic service with civic change. A model from the University of Nebraska-Omaha suggests that introducing civic learning in the first year is highly effective, especially for urban university students who have strong ties to the city.
