Investigating Secondary Students Beliefs About Mathematical Problem-Solving, Mark Prendergast, Cormac Breen, Aibhin Bray, Fiona Faulkner, Brian Carroll, Dominic Quinn

Articles

Many studies over the past thirty years have highlighted the important role of students’ beliefs for successful problem solving in mathematics. Given the recent emphasis afforded to problem solving on the reformed Irish secondary school mathematics curriculum, the main aim of this study was to identify Irish students’ (n = 975) beliefs about the field. A quantitative measure of these beliefs was attained through the use of the Indiana Mathematical Belief Scale, an existing thirty item (five scale) self-report questionnaire. A statistical analysis of the data revealed that students who were further through their secondary education had a stronger belief …

Public Goods And Public Policy: What Is Public Good, And Who And What Decides?, Ellen Hazelkorn, Andrew Gibson Jan 2018

Public Goods And Public Policy: What Is Public Good, And Who And What Decides?, Ellen Hazelkorn, Andrew Gibson

Articles

Higher education is usually seen as serving the public good, especially when funded directly by the state, and because of the ‘social benefit efficiency gains and potential equity effects on opportunity and reduced inequality’ (McMahon, 2009, p. 255). Calhoun (2006, p. 19) argues that public support for higher education is only given and maintained according to its capacity, capability, and willingness, to ‘educate citizens in general, to share knowledge, to distribute it as widely as possible in accord with publically articulated purposes’.

Canada Eu Trade Agreement Ceta: For Corporations Or Citizens. Higher Education As A Universal Space For Critical Discussion And Debate, Liam Mcglynn Dr

Papers

The term ‘Trade War’ has re-entered the lexicon of international and global geopolitics in recent times. International trade has a significant bearing not just on the economic life of countries but on their citizens, their societies and cultures too. Trade impacts on citizens, not just corporations. It is therefore not simply the preserve of economists and the business community, it is the business of political representatives, sociologists, environmentalists (increasingly) and educators also.

This paper will explore the evolution of one of the key roles on campus for students with a disability in the context of Universal Design for Learning - that of the Disability Officer. The role of Disability Officer, while neither a teacher or a learner – is primarily occupied with all those engaged in making learning accessible. It is a role that is very much part of the learning experience for any student with a disability. The challenge for Disability Officers on a UDL campus is that while they are part of the learning environment on campus they - similar …

The Impact Of A Universally Designed, Inclusive Third Level Education Programme For Adults With Intellectual Disabilities In A Dublin College, Deirdre Bonar

Papers

The right to an inclusive education is explicitly stated in Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD 2016). The term Inclusion is significant, and it has replaced the preceding term Integration. Where integration may simply involve a student with a disability being placed in a mainstream setting, inclusion involves a focus on the experience of that student, removing barriers and supporting the student to participate in the educational process in the same way as their non-disabled peers. Integrated education in Ireland has been part of education policy since 1993 when a report …

An increasing number of higher education institutions are now developing new inclusive design courses and programmes …

Making Accessibility Data Accessible – A Challenge, Kathrin Bögelsack, Sven Michaelis Jan 2018

Making Accessibility Data Accessible – A Challenge, Kathrin Bögelsack, Sven Michaelis

Papers

The Norwegian mapping authority has been carrying out a project on mapping accessibility following a national standard since 2009. In the beginning, the mapping was organized and carried out by the Norwegian Mapping Authority. This resulted in the creation of a good basic dataset for many Norwegian districts and bigger district-centers and enabled us to develop a national standard. However, it also lead to that the districts often did not feel any responsibility or ownership of the dataset and therefore did not use it in the scope that was intended. As a result, the mapping responsibility was given to the …

Most of them will live in own house with his/her suppose or aged children, or alone. The dementia is progressive disease, so patients lose their abilities gradually in approximately ten years. Mostly there are two types of countermeasure action for the dementia; one is care and the other is prevention such as brain training or cognition plus exercise. Even though they will do many things by themselves independently …

Representation, Access And Participation For People With Disabilities In Local Government, Elisabeth Kokkin Koppe Jan 2018

Representation, Access And Participation For People With Disabilities In Local Government, Elisabeth Kokkin Koppe

Papers

After 1948 and the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights there was little attention to individual rights as such. The focus was mostly on anti-colonialism and collective rights for peoples, like the right to self-determination for indigenous and tribal peoples living in independent states and freedom from colonialism (Moyn, 2010b) p. 85-86. The awareness regarding individual rights was actually invoked in the 70’s. It was President Jimmy Carter who in January 1977 in his inauguration speech proclaimed: "Because we are free we can never be indifferent to the fate of freedom elsewhere…. Our commitment to human rights must …

Maneuvering Area, Corridors And Lobbies For Wheeled Mobility Aid Users, Alborz Ahosseini

Papers

World is evolving rapidly, and new accessibility equipment and devices are being introduced which makes life easier for the people with disabilities. However, the rapid developments in the evolution of accessibility equipment may not always be coordinated with the existing accessibility norms and standards. The gap between accessibility provisions in built environments and developments in accessibility equipment is increasing by not taking the evolution of assistive equipment into account. By having a future orientated view on the development of accessibility equipment, some of the existing accessibility norms and provisions may thus require to change significantly. One of the important assistive …

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle Jan 2018

Adopting More Diverse Models Of Organisation In Higher Education- The Implications For Institutional Strategy., Tom Doyle

Papers

A universal approach to strategy formulation in higher education implies one that is fit for the many and complex contingencies faced by that institution. Reviews of current form of strategising indicate that the present approach to strategic management falls short of meeting that criterion. The paper suggests that this deficiency might be addressed by adopting a much more fluid perception of the university as an organisation and devising a form of strategic management that that takes greater account of the paradoxical nature of the institution and the environment in which it operates. It argues that deficiencies in the present form …

Designing The Transition To Higher Education For Students From Under-Represented Groups, Trevor Vaugh, Martha Brandes, Gemma Lynch, Olivia Mcneill, Alyssa Brigham

Papers

Universities are increasingly seeking to open access routes and identify ways of encouraging under-represented groups to consider higher education as an option. This cohort of students often have distinct challenges associated with disability, maturity and socioeconomic disadvantage. Maynooth University, through the Maynooth University access programme (MAP) and the Launchpad Orientation Programme (Launchpad), has proven successful in supporting these groups, helping them transition into and through higher education. Unfortunately the challenges associated with under-represented groups can lead to increased, often unarticulated difficulties, resulting in greater reliance on services and higher dropout rates compared to the average student. We discuss here a …

Examining The Use Of Web-Based Tools In Fully Online Learning Community Environments, Shannon Webb, Roland Van Oostveen, Wendy Barber, Jennifer Percival, Elizabeth Childs

Papers

In order to participate in the co-creation of the digital space inherent in Fully Online Learning Community (FOLC) environments (vanOostveen, DiGiuseppe, Barber, Blayone & Childs, 2016), learners must be familiar with the types of web-based tools that are available, and how they can be used to support collaborative learning. Bower (2015) states that educators have a narrow conception of web-based technologies and consequently there are many web-based applications which have not yet been found or utilized. It is suspected that this is also the case for many learners. This paper examines the awareness of web-based tools as well as their …

Two different approaches to addressing this issue can be found. A brief review of such methodologies is provided in this paper. The first …

Minority Language Maintenance In Bilingual Speakers: From Primary School To Higher Education, Bozena Dubiel Jan 2018

Minority Language Maintenance In Bilingual Speakers: From Primary School To Higher Education, Bozena Dubiel

Papers

Bilinguals have options as to which language they can use. However, the options are not truly theirs but depend on multiple factors such as the country of residence, profession, business relations, and family circumstances. Therefore, bilinguals have to choose which language they use more and which less, and as language proficiency correlates with the frequency of its use, they often have sacrifices to make. Previous studies have shown that language acquisition in bilinguals can be uneven as the development of each system relies on the amount of language exposure and use, which in bilinguals is divided between two languages (de …

When It Goes Wrong, How Do I Know I Am An Excellent Teacher, (Just Having A Bad Day)?, Roisin Donnelly

Other resources

We all doubt ourselves at times, and we all have bad days in the classroom! Being an excellent teacher is a challenge to achieve consistently, made more difficult by trying to measure how we as teachers make decisions in the classroom, and what impact those decisions have on what and how our students learn. This case study is offered from the perspective of an academic developer, working as a ‘third space’ professional (Whitchurch, 2008), and as a facilitator of discussions about excellent teaching in higher education on DIT’s teaching qualification – the Postgraduate Diploma in Third Level learning and Teaching.
