The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the communication styles used by senior leaders in health insurance to manage organizational change in upstate New York. Using transformational leadership theory as a lens, this study sought to gain a better understanding of which communication style senior leaders in health insurance are using during organizational change, such as state and federal mandates. Data in this study were collected using the Communication Style Inventory (CSI) (de Vries et al., 2009), a Likert-style questionnaire completed by senior leaders in health insurance, to evaluate perceived styles of communication. Employee substance use has impacted organizational structure, resulting in problems such as poor performance, absenteeism, financial loss and workers compensation claim cost as a result of safety risks. Driven by federal and state legislation to provide a safe and healthy work environment, employers have implemented non-integrated and integrated deterrence/support programs for reducing the harmful effects of employee drug use. The shortage of teachers highly qualified to educate students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in New York State affects the education of those pupils. There is a lack of research and understanding into the perspectives of leaders of schools of education in New York State who can affect the preparation of teacher candidates. This descriptive phenomenological study examined the experiences of 10 leaders in Upstate New York departments of education on the establishment of teacher preparation programs or coursework that would ensure preservice graduates are adequately prepared to educate students with ASD.
