Succession planning and the pending vacancies in leadership are both important topics in higher education in general and community colleges specifically. Faculty have historically played an important role in filling the leadership pipeline in community colleges, with the first step in this transition being from faculty to academic deans. However, there is little research focused on the role of the academic dean, let alone that transition from faculty to administration, in the community college setting. Studies were selected in order to determine if they supported the importance of self-determination for transition age youth with disabilities. All of the studies indicated that higher self-determination levels and self-determination skills are beneficial to individuals. The intervention-specific studies were especially promising. Students who were taught a specific self-determination curriculum experienced higher self-determination levels, higher quality of life ratings, higher levels of employment, and higher levels of community access. Abstract
This study looks at the impacts of the Advanced Preparation Program (APP) experiences on students of color at St. Cloud State University. Both Astin’s (1993) Input-Environment-Output (I-E-O) model and Schlossberg’s Theory (1981) were utilized to determine and understand what impact various environmental experiences had on student outcomes. Through the application of qualitative research methodologies, interviews were conducted to find recurring themes within the shared experiences. Six emerging themes were utilized to share the experiences of each student, pointing specifically to environmental experiences which impacted their ability to sustain academically.
