Using Imagination To Bridge Young Children’S Literacy And Science Learning: A Dialogic Approach, Huili Hong, Karin Keith, Renee Rice Moran Jan 2019

Using Imagination To Bridge Young Children’S Literacy And Science Learning: A Dialogic Approach, Huili Hong, Karin Keith, Renee Rice Moran

Renee Rice Moran

Integrating children’s literacy and science learning has become a new focus in literacy instruction. Imagination, an integral part of children’s learning experience, remains marginalized in today’s early childhood education curriculum. Drawing on a yearlong ethnographic study in a first-grade classroom, this paper explores the potential affordance of imagination in integrating young children’s literacy and science learning. The findings showed that the integration opportunities were organically constructed in and through children’s natural engagement of imagination in their reading process. A dialogic approach is presented as one way to ignite children’s imaginations in their literacy and science learning.

Investigating The Influence Of The Level Of Inquiry On Student Engagement, Emily K. Faulconer Jan 2019

Investigating The Influence Of The Level Of Inquiry On Student Engagement, Emily K. Faulconer

Emily Faulconer

Previous studies investigating student-generated questions in a laboratory class compared inquiry to a traditional approach without characterizing the inquiry level. This study investigated the influence of inquiry level on the quantity and quality of student-generated questions over one semester in a General Chemistry course with 356 participants. The researchers studied two types of inquiry in labs: structured inquiry and open inquiry. Quantity and quality of student-generated questions were analyzed and student attitudes were measured using a LIKERT survey while content knowledge was assessed via post-test. A close relationship was not found between the level of inquiry and the quantity or …

Increasing Student Interactions With Learning Objectives, Emily Kaye Faulconer Jan 2019

Increasing Student Interactions With Learning Objectives, Emily Kaye Faulconer

Emily Faulconer

As educators, we recognize the importance of strong student learning objectives. We also know that students benefit by being well informed of expectations. Existing literature offers little guidance in methods and teaching strategies to apply in exposing students to their learning objectives. In this article, we discuss the use of specific teaching strategies to increase student interactions with the learning objectives. Student opinions regarding learning objectives were measured using an end-of-course Likert survey. Although no statistically significant changes in student opinions were detected in this study, a future study will investigate the influence of these targeted strategies on content mastery. …

Keep your conversation sweet before bed so your mind can relax and get out of the problem-solving mode. Think on all of the things that make you grateful to be alive, meditate or say your prayers.

Try to develop a healthy sleep rhythm to get to bed at the same time every night and allow 7 hours or more for sleep. Do a few gentle stretches before you get into bed to release tight muscles.

Rsch 202 - Difference In Grades - Grade Distribution And Pass Rates Between Online-Classroom And Video Learning Roberts Griffith Faulconer.Pdf, Donna L. Roberts Phd, John C. Griffith Ph.D., Emily K. Faulconer Ph.D.

John Griffith

Education researchers have conducted studies on the relationship of learning mode to student performance but few studies have evaluated pass rate, grade distribution and student withdrawal rate in an introductory research methods course.  In this study, researchers examined 2,097 student grades from the 2015-2016 academic year to determine if such a relationship existed.  In this study, learning mode was significantly related to failure rate, grade distribution and withdraw rate.  Synchronous video home students had a significantly higher failure rate than traditional In-Person or online students.  Online student grade distributions were significantly different than In-Person classroom, synchronous video home or synchronous …

Feedback best practices suggest that timely, specific, and actionable feedback is provided, with the option to apply the feedback. We used a learning management system to deliver assessments with automatic feedback provided at the conclusion of the assessment, allowing for multiple attempts in order to apply the knowledge gained. Questions were pooled so each attempt was unique, the highest score earned was awarded, and there was no penalty for failure to take advantage of multiple attempts. We found that students who did not earn an A on their first attempt were more likely to opt to try again. Those that …

Magneto-Active Slosh Control System Using Free Floating Membrane For Cylinderical Propellant Tanks Read More: Https://Arc.Aiaa.Org/Doi/Abs/10.2514/6.2019-2177, Pedro Llanos

Pedro J. Llanos (www.AstronauticsLlanos.com)

The phenomenon of sloshing is a substantial challenge in propellant management, particularly in reduced gravity where surface tension-driven flows result in large slosh amplitudes and relatively long decay time scales. Propellant Management Devices (PMDs) such as the rigid baffles and elastomeric membranes are often employed to counteract motion of the free surface. In the present study, we investigate an active PMD that utilizes a free-floating membrane that, under an applied static magnetic field, becomes rigid and suppresses slosh. This semi-rigid structural layer can thereby replace bulky baffle structures and reduce the overall weight of the tank. In this paper, the …

Designing A Collaborative Cross-Campus Drop-In Workshop Series To Motivate Lifelong Learners, Tim Miller, Sarah Fay Philips Jan 2019

Designing A Collaborative Cross-Campus Drop-In Workshop Series To Motivate Lifelong Learners, Tim Miller, Sarah Fay Philips

Tim Miller

The Humboldt State University Library decided to redesign library instruction and programming; we hoped to make our offerings more scalable and engaging for our students. To that end, we cultivated campus partnerships and designed a workshop program to motivate students to participate in co-curricular learning. Implementing a successful drop-in workshop program is challenging; many librarians have experience with poorly attended drop-in workshops, inadequate campus support, and insufficient student interest. Our library’s initial experience was no different, yet with planning, partnerships, and some useful tools, we were able to address these issues
and build a cross-campus collaborative workshop series that not …

Educating The Space Scientists At Embry-Riddle Through Design, Build And Fly Rocketry Experience, Pedro Llanos, Robert E. Haley, Sathya Gangadharan

Pedro J. Llanos (www.AstronauticsLlanos.com)

Practical experience for students in rockets and payloads is very valuable in the space industry, and it is something that would give them an advantage over other applicants. Students in Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Payload and Integration class were given the opportunity to build a level 1 rocket and gain experience developing, testing, and integrating payloads into a rocket. The students were given the tasks to come up with an idea for a payload, design the payload to fit within the rocket for flight, and assemble and launch the rocket with the payload in the payload bay. The tasks required for …

School Improvement: Data-Driven And Vision-Centered, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Building upon the previous chapter’s discussion of the importance of a shared vision, this chapter will address the fleshing out of that vision through a cycle of school improvement. It will explain how the school’s vision statement—if current, relevant, and understood by stakeholders—is central to all school-improvement initiatives. This chapter will present theories and practical models for data-driven decision making and will outline recommended steps for setting realistic goals, implementing those goals, and assessing the degree to which they have been met.

Omission And Othering: Constructing Autism On College Websites., Kirsten R. Brown Dec 2018

Omission And Othering: Constructing Autism On College Websites., Kirsten R. Brown

Kirsten R. Brown, Ph.D.

Students with autism attend two-year colleges at a significantly greater rate than four-year institutions. As these prospective and current students engage with two-year colleges, websites are an important digital platform to assess inclusivity and campus climate. The digital environment is particularly important because many autistic individuals prefer to engage in written communication. We employed a critical content analysis to understand the digital campus climate at public two-year colleges (n = 94) by analyzing website content that colleges use to describe autism. Findings show that the digital campus climate was unwelcoming for the vast majority of prospective and current students with …
