Preserving Adolescent Readership Through Interest And Motivation, Gina M. Doepker, Evan Ortlieb Oct 2017

Preserving Adolescent Readership Through Interest And Motivation, Gina M. Doepker, Evan Ortlieb

Gina Doepker

Adolescent literacy has remained a relatively hot topic for several years in the field of reading education (Cassidy, Ortlieb, & Shettel, 2010/2011) however, educators remain conflicted about how to maintain high levels of reading motivation. A historical analysis of adolescent interests and motivations was conducted to determine what instructional techniques have had positive effects so as to meet the imminent needs of adolescent readers. Findings include information pertaining to: choice of a multitude of reading materials, substantial time to experience aesthetic and engaging reading experiences, and a relevant, challenging curriculum that addresses student needs, personal interests, and motivations.

Obstacles To Graduation: A Look At Poverty’S Effect On Academic Work, Julia M. Bernard, Maike Klein

Julia M. Bernard

Our presentation was aimed at providing a thorough overview of concepts that interfere with an adolescent’s ability to stay in school and graduate. Additionally, the presentation addressed what other factors of poverty, such as risk-taking behaviors (e.g., marijuana use, binge drinking, or sexual activity), might carry over into college life and affect a student’s academic career. Variables connected to family community, family responsibilities, and adolescents’ self-esteem were described as well. Finally, the presentation discussed factors that play into a student’s willingness to seek out college campus resources for support. With this paper, we hope to outline variables that lead to …

An Innovative Behavioral Interview For Pre-Admission Selection Of Occupational Therapy Students, Kitsum Li, Julia L. Wilbarger, Shad St. Louis

Kitsum Li

The goal for pre-admission interview is to identify students who will be successful both academically and professionally. The traditional structured pre-admission interview has not been shown to be effective in predicting students’ success in academic and fieldwork performance. This article describes an innovative behavioral interview process during which applicants interviewed simulated clients as part of the preadmission selection process. The goals of the pre-admission behavioral interview were to observe applicants’ behavior as team players, and to assess their interpersonal communication skills, capability to be reflective, and professionalism. During the behavioral interview, faculty interviewers assessed the applicants’ performance in the planning …

Michael J. Paulus, Jr.

Digital information and communication technologies are rapidly changing how we understand our identities and institutions. Five hundred years ago, new printing technologies created conditions that enabled the Protestant reformation and profoundly changed the world. Today, we are in the midst of a digital revolution. But what is being reformed, and what are we reforming? This session will explore the nature of our present information age and the theological questions it raises, touching on theological principles, cultural critiques, and spiritual practices that can help us reflect on digital reformation and transformation.

Experiences With Scala Across The College-Level Curriculum, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Mark C. Lewis Oct 2017

Experiences With Scala Across The College-Level Curriculum, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Mark C. Lewis

Konstantin Läufer

Various hybrid-functional languages, designed to balance compile-time error detection, conciseness, and performance, have emerged. Scala, e.g., is interoperable with Java and has become an early leader in adoption, especially in the start-up and open-source spaces. As educators, we have recognized Scala’s value as a teaching language across the CS curriculum. In CS1, the read-eval-print loop and simple, uniform syntax aid programming in the small. In CS2, higher-order methods allow concise, efficient manipulation of collections. In a programming languages course, advanced constructs facilitate the separation of concerns, program representation and interpretation, and concurrent programming. In advanced applied courses, language mechanisms and …

Teacher Educator Identity In A Culture Of Iterative Teacher Education Program Design: A Collaborative Self-Study, Aurora Chang, Sabina Rak Neugebauer, Aimee Papola-Ellis, David Ensminger, Ann Marie Ryan, Adam Kennedy

Ann Marie Ryan, PhD

Faculty in the School of Education at our institution have collaborated to re-envision teacher education at our university. A complex, dynamic, time-consuming and sometimes painstaking process, redesigning a teacher education program from a traditional approach (i.e., where courses focus primarily on theoretical principles of practice through textbooks and University-based classroom discussions), to a model of teacher education that embraces teaching, learning and leading with schools and in communities is challenging, yet exciting work. Little is known about teacher educators’ experiences as they either design or deliver collaborative field-based models of teacher education. In this article, we examine our experiences in …

What's In The Soup? I Look Into Fusion Within Different Stem Programs, David Ellis Oct 2017

What's In The Soup? I Look Into Fusion Within Different Stem Programs, David Ellis

David Ellis

STEM education is a pedagogical approach that regularly incorporates technology education as well as the other disciplines to contextualise content.  However, what constitutes a STEM program can be confusing as it can differ greatly from program to program.   Some examples of this difference can adopt multidisciplinary versions of STEM, whereas other programs may be more collaborative such as interdisciplinary or even holistic and offer a transdisciplinary STEM approach.
This paper presents an analysis using a mixed method research approach that reports on the level of fusion experienced by technology teachers involved in STEM programs.   The approach to the research asked …

Utilizing Participatory Action Research To Foster Effective Family/School Collaboration At An Urban Prek-8 Catholic School, David L. Shriberg, Ruth Schumacher, Kara C. Mcmahon, Sofia Flores, Gregory E. Moy, Joanna Swidzinski, Nicole A. Tompkins

David Shriberg

This paper describes a study focused on promoting culturally responsive collaboration practices at an urban preK-8 Catholic school. Using participatory action research (PAR) as its framework, a team of school stakeholders and university faculty and students from the psychology department partnered to create a participant driven data collection and analysis procedure that culminated in the implementation of a new communication mechanism judged by educators and parents to have led to significant improvements in family-school communications. Lessons learned from this experience, particularly as they relate to the use of PAR principles in an urban Catholic school, will be shared.
