A Program Evaluation Of Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics At A Community College In Virginia, Marilyn Lawson Peacock
A Program Evaluation Of Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics At A Community College In Virginia, Marilyn Lawson Peacock
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
With the current emphasis on accountability and the importance of math skills in our present economy, the success of developmental mathematics students at community colleges is critical. How to improve the success of these developmental students has become the impetus for many educational initiatives. One educational innovation in tutoring, called supplemental instruction, has been successfully applied to high-risk courses which are defined to have a failure rate in excess of 30%. Mid-Atlantic Community College, in its Title III grant which seeks to improve the success of developmental students, selected supplemental instruction as its initiative. This program evaluation investigated the effects …
The Influence Of Demographic Characteristics, Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Attributes On The Effectiveness Of The Ladders Probation Intervention Program, Terri M. Mathews
The Influence Of Demographic Characteristics, Cognitive And Non-Cognitive Attributes On The Effectiveness Of The Ladders Probation Intervention Program, Terri M. Mathews
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Retention is an important measure for institutions of higher education thereby making improved academic success and increased retention of paramount concern to university administrators. This concern has resulted in a body of literature addressing retention and the development of retention programs. Few of these programs however, have been empirically evaluated for their effectiveness and repeatedly, the literature has cited the need for evaluation of retention and probation programs across demographic, cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics. The purpose of this research was to determine whether the LADDERS (Let Academic Difficulty Disappear to Energize and Retain Students) program developed by Old Dominion University …

School District Budgeting In The Era Of Increased Accountability And No Child Left Behind: A Mixed Methods Case Study Of School District Budgeting Processes And The Correlation To Student Achievement, Scott Alan Burckbuchler
School District Budgeting In The Era Of Increased Accountability And No Child Left Behind: A Mixed Methods Case Study Of School District Budgeting Processes And The Correlation To Student Achievement, Scott Alan Burckbuchler
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
School district budgeting decisions take on added significance in light of fulfilling the objectives of No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). If NCLB's goal of 100% student proficiency by 2014 is to be realized, school districts, as part of their improvement plans, need to focus on how to ensure that appropriate resources are available to fund proven instructional strategies which produce results. Budgeting merges resources and results. This study examines school district budgeting processes in light of NCLB. Overall, it appears that, in the school districts represented, budgeting practices have changed since the introduction of NCLB. More specifically, there has …
The Relationship Between Rural Middle School Student Mathematics Achievement And Classroom Sense Of Community, John E. Donlan
The Relationship Between Rural Middle School Student Mathematics Achievement And Classroom Sense Of Community, John E. Donlan
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
This study addressed the need for more information about academic growth and achievement in mathematics, and how it relates to sense of community in middle school settings. This was accomplished by applying the Classroom and School Community Inventory (CSCI) construct (Rovai, Wighting, & Lucking, 2004) to all three middle schools in one rural county. The CSCI was utilized to measure sense of community in mathematics classes to determine if differences existed between grades six, seven, and eight, including gender subgroups, among the three middle schools in the same rural county. This study examined academic growth in the subject of mathematics …
The Non-Cognitive Attributes Of First-Year At-Risk Students Who Are Academically Successful And Retained At Old Dominion University, Tisha M. Paredes
The Non-Cognitive Attributes Of First-Year At-Risk Students Who Are Academically Successful And Retained At Old Dominion University, Tisha M. Paredes
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
With a decrease in state and federal funding, higher educational institutions need to focus on retaining students. However, student retention is a multifaceted problem that requires varied solutions. Traditional measures, or cognitive measures, of student success, such as pre-college knowledge (SAT and high school grade point average) have not explained how higher education institutions retained students, especially students who are considered at-risk. Since the nature of student retention is idiosyncratic, research needs to focus on other measures, such as students' non-cognitive factors. Tinto has outlined non-cognitive factors, such as pre-college characteristics, goals and commitments, and institutional experiences, which influence students' …
The Impact Of Participation In A Virginia Community College Orientation Program Course On Student Engagement, Satisfaction, Academic Achievement, And Retention, Wendy L. Tighe
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Participation in an orientation program course and several student engagement and satisfaction factors have been identified as positively related to desirable student outcomes. This study explored student engagement, satisfaction, academic achievement, and retention for students based on their enrollment in an orientation course at Tidewater Community College (TCC) in Virginia. This study used a cross-sectional, static group comparison secondary data analysis approach to explore four research questions. The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) data used for this study came from the TCC spring 2005 Community College Student Report (CCSR) this study determined whether or not participation in an …
The Influences Of Interaction On The Satisfaction, Achievement, And Retention Of Developmental Community College Students, Elizabeth Copeland Wilmer
The Influences Of Interaction On The Satisfaction, Achievement, And Retention Of Developmental Community College Students, Elizabeth Copeland Wilmer
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social and academic interaction, demographic characteristics, social and academic adjustment, and learning communities on the satisfaction, achievement, and retention of developmental English community college students.
The literature presented discusses the retention theories of Tinto, Astin, and Bean and their overlapping ideas on persistence. A common thread among these theories is the role of academic and social interaction on the personal development, satisfaction, achievement, and retention of students. Learning communities represent one academic structure that has proven effective in increasing the level of academic and social interaction. Unfortunately, the existing …
Generational Differences Among Community College Students In Their Evaluation Of Academic Cheating, Kathleen E. Wotring
Generational Differences Among Community College Students In Their Evaluation Of Academic Cheating, Kathleen E. Wotring
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Values development is an important part of the mission of community colleges, and upholding academic integrity is one way in which colleges advance this mission. Community colleges serve a multigenerational student body, more diverse than most four-year institutions of higher education, and different generational cohort groups hold different values and attitudes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether community college students varied by generation in their evaluation of academic activities as cheating, and to further determine whether such variation interacted with demographic variables and the extent to which personal morality is grounded in a religious belief system. Based …
Predictors Of Persistence Among Community College Adult And Traditional-Aged Students, Kellie Crawford Sorey
Predictors Of Persistence Among Community College Adult And Traditional-Aged Students, Kellie Crawford Sorey
Educational Foundations & Leadership Theses & Dissertations
Previous literature has documented the high attrition rates for community college students. Beyond raw data, research has demonstrated that predictors of higher education persistence may include a student's background characteristics, a student's external commitments, institutional influences, and a combination thereof. However, empirical research on the persistence of community college students is scarce, and even fewer studies address the differential predictors of persistence between adult and traditional-aged students. The present study examined the predictors of institutional persistence among adult and traditional-aged degree-seeking, first-time enrollees at a public, multi-campus two-year community college in southeast Virginia.
A random sample comprised of 350 traditional-aged …
