A Content Analysis Of Dissertations On Business Topics: A Quantitative Study, Kat Yamamoto Dec 2020

A Content Analysis Of Dissertations On Business Topics: A Quantitative Study, Kat Yamamoto

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Many students explore business topics in their dissertations because they are relevant research areas for future scholar-practitioners such as leaders, educators, researchers, and consultants. Nevertheless, there is limited scholarship on the content of dissertations from PhD and practitioner doctoral programs. Dissertation research methodology choices, page lengths, and research topics have not been studied extensively. Few studies have been conducted to explore the differences and similarities between researcher-oriented and practitioner-oriented dissertations. This study examined dissertations written on business topics in the recent ten years using content analysis to address these gaps. A sample of dissertations uploaded in the years 2010, 2015, …

Not For The Faint Of Heart: An Informal Review Of The Literature On Stress Among School Administrators, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.

Faculty Publications - College of Education

School administrators face intensifying work demands and increased scrutiny. The role is challenging and isolating. For women, minorities, rural school leaders, and those new to administration, there are additional challenges to face.

It is essential for those shaping programs to prepare future school administrators and support leaders in the field to have a thorough understanding of the many challenges that can make it difficult for school leaders to simply survive, let alone thrive. Some challenges are common to nearly all school leaders, but challenges unique to individual leaders are shaped by circumstance, personal characteristics, and choices made along the way. …

Trust And Feedback In A Student Teaching Support System, Kristin M. Rich Nov 2020

Trust And Feedback In A Student Teaching Support System, Kristin M. Rich

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

In a preservice teacher’s brief time as a student teacher, feedback between the student and his or her cooperating teacher and university supervisor is intended to be formative and allow for adjustments in pedagogy and continued development of a teaching identity. However, trust or lack of trust within this triad can influence any of the member’s response to feedback. Without trust, giving or receiving feedback may break down and hinder the preservice teacher’s progress. By considering three examples of student teaching experiences where the interplay of trust and feedback adversely affected a student teacher’s progress, this essay argues for more …

The Grace To Grow Deeper: A Case Study Of Environmentalism In A Canadian Christian School, Allyson Jule, Adrienne R. Castellon Nov 2020

The Grace To Grow Deeper: A Case Study Of Environmentalism In A Canadian Christian School, Allyson Jule, Adrienne R. Castellon

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Successful environmental pedagogy in faith-based schools has not been well explored even while most Christian schools in Canada are governed by provincial curricula and provincial teacher standards that require commitments to environmentalism. Conflicts within mainline Christianity in regards to the importance of environmental justice may be why some Christian schools do not engage in environmental pedagogy (Mann & Schleifer, 2020). This study draws on data from one Christian school in the province of Ontario, Canada. The methodology used is case study approached through an Appreciative Inquiry lens – a methodology that is particularly useful in school-based research (Stavros, et al. …

An Exploratory Data Analysis Study Of Open Education Resources In Dental Hygiene Education, Jessica Luebbers Sep 2020

An Exploratory Data Analysis Study Of Open Education Resources In Dental Hygiene Education, Jessica Luebbers

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The cost of attending a college or university increases each year. Many institutions of higher education have examined ways to reduce student debt. One potential method to reduce this debt and encourage student retention is through the use of open education resources (OERs) (Couglan, et al, 2013; Islim et al, 2016). “It is well documented in the literature that high-quality OERs can lead to significant financial benefits” (Colvard et al, 2018, p. 263). Also, “previous studies have found that a majority of faculty and students perceive OERs to be equal to, or better than, commercial textbooks in terms of quality” …

When's The Payoff?: A Narrative Inquiry Into Adjunct Faculty Experiences, Tiffany Sarkisian

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This narrative inquiry sought to understand how adjunct faculty negotiated professorial identity and institutional belongingness after failed tenure-track interview processes when those same adjunct faculty continue to teach on that same campus or within that same district that did not offer them a tenure-track position. Two adjuncts teaching within a multi-campus California community college district shared their verbal stories as a means to further understand their experiences related to the research questions. Their narratives suggested that (1) the phase in their career and how the tenure-track experience was framed, impacted their professorial identity and (2) reflecting on various college professional …

After several close observations with six participants in grades 2-5, semi-structured conversational interviews revealed recurring feelings of frustration, constraint, and missed opportunities in classrooms. Participants claimed that school was not challenging and they did not learn much. When classroom life did not provide intellectual stimulation, gifted students often engaged in reading. The voices of intellectually gifted students show how they experience life …

The Lost Boys: A Phenomenological Study Of Freshmen Year Failure, Holly Miele Apr 2020

The Lost Boys: A Phenomenological Study Of Freshmen Year Failure, Holly Miele

Doctor of Education (EdD)

In educational circles and beyond, there is increased concern for young men who are deemed underperforming in schools. This concern has been persistent for years, and has led to many studies exploring the growing academic divide between young men and women. Few have endeavored to investigate this phenomenon by studying young men’s experiences. Using Eccles’ Value-Expectancy (2000) framework as a guide, this phenomenological study explored the lived-experience of six young men who failed courses during their freshman year of high school. The aim of this study was to investigate the intersection of stereotypes, expectations, and perceptions within the context of …

Christian Higher Education Faculty's Perceptions Of Occupational Stress, Job Demands, And Job Resources As Predictors Of Job Burnout, Michelle E. Shelton

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The aim of this study was to explore the extent to which faculty perceptions of occupational stress, job demands, and job resources are predictors of job burnout for faculty at Christian universities, specifically at CCCU institutions. The desire was to gain an awareness of these variables as they relate to the well-being of Christian higher education faculty. The hope was that administrators and leaders in academe will consider making changes to provide an environment that is more supportive of faculty. This research study could help administrators and leaders at universities to take a critical look at what is being asked …

Growth Mindset And The Gospel Community, Jillian Lederhouse

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Since publication in 2006, noted Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s research on mindset has influenced P-12 curriculum and instruction, helping pre-school, elementary and secondary educators create learning environments that help children and adolescents achieve more rigorous learning outcomes. This essay poses the question of whether it should create an equal impact on higher education, and, more specifically, on Christian teacher preparation programs. The article first reviews the differences between fixed and growth mindsets, misconceptions of the two, and how the two models affect learning at all levels. The essay then gives five scripturally grounded reasons for encouraging a growth mindset in …
