An Exploration Of The Sexual Orientation And Educational Outcomes Of Undergraduate Fraternity Members, Larry D. Long Apr 2011

An Exploration Of The Sexual Orientation And Educational Outcomes Of Undergraduate Fraternity Members, Larry D. Long

Larry D. Long

Previous research found an unwelcoming environment may hinder the identity development of college students. Furthermore, studies revealed gay, bisexual, and questioning (GBQ) students may encounter a hostile environment in college fraternities. This influenced the researcher to question if fraternities are as effective in producing educational gains for GBQ members as for heterosexual members. In the present study, the researcher sampled 286 GBQ and 286 heterosexual fraternity members from the aggregate results of the campuses that used the AFA/EBI Fraternity/Sorority Assessment in 2009 or 2010. The researcher conducted rank-based analyses of variance to assess the differences in personal gains, alcohol use, …

Filosofia E Constituição. Simbolismo Das Origens. A Lição De Brotero, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Progressing Participation: Taming The Space Between Rhetoric And Reality, Anne Graham, Jenni Whelan, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald Apr 2011

Progressing Participation: Taming The Space Between Rhetoric And Reality, Anne Graham, Jenni Whelan, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald

Professor Anne Graham

Participation, as a social and political movement, continues to gain momentum, and the legal and sociological frameworks supporting the rights of children and young people to participate in various aspects of social life are now well established. Yet, there are gaps and silences behind the rhetoric of participation that beg closer scrutiny. Such analysis is important in ensuring “participation” is not un-problematically adopted by policy makers and practitioners without regard to the complex and competing agendas at work in its implementation or any clear evidence of the significance or outcomes for the young people involved. This paper explores some of …

7 (Hipó)Teses Sobre O Facebook, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Sebastianismo E Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Mar 2011

Sebastianismo E Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Direito Pensado, Sentido E Vivido Em L. A. Warat, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

O Céu No Bolso, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

E contudo...

Biodepollution Of Wastewater Containing Phenolic Compounds From Leather Industry By Plant Peroxidases, Mamounata Diao, Nafissetou Ouedraogo, Lamine Baba-Moussa, Paul W. Savadogo, Georges N'Guessan Amani, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof. Jan 2011

Biodepollution Of Wastewater Containing Phenolic Compounds From Leather Industry By Plant Peroxidases, Mamounata Diao, Nafissetou Ouedraogo, Lamine Baba-Moussa, Paul W. Savadogo, Georges N'Guessan Amani, Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof.

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

This study deals with the use of peroxidases (POXs) from Allium sativum, Ipomoea batatas, Raphanus sativus and Sorghum bicolor to catalyze the degradation of free phenolic compounds as well as phenolic compounds contained in wastewater from leather industry. Secretory plant POXs were able to catalyze the oxidation of gallic acid, ferulic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, pyrogallol and 1,4-tyrosol prepared in ethanol 2% (v:v). Efficiency of peroxidase catalysis depends strongly on the chemical nature of phenolic substrates and on the botanical source of the enzymes. It appeared that POX from Raphanus sativus had the highest efficiency. Results show that POXs can also …

Identidade E Atraso, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Crise & Democracia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

A Matter Of Diversity, Equity And Necessity: The Tension Between Maryland's Higher Education System And Its Historically Black Institutions Over The Ocr Agreement, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Marybeth Gasman, Phd Dec 2010

A Matter Of Diversity, Equity And Necessity: The Tension Between Maryland's Higher Education System And Its Historically Black Institutions Over The Ocr Agreement, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Marybeth Gasman, Phd

Marybeth Gasman

Eighteen years after the Supreme Court rendered its decision in Fordice, many states have complied somewhat or not at all to its mandates. This has been particularly evident in Maryland, where the presidents of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are pressuring the state to fulfill its commitment with the Office of Civil Rights (OCR), stemming from Fordice, to make HBCUs comparable to their White peers. While Maryland has declared that it has complied with its OCR agreement by preventing unnecessary program duplication between HBCUs and White institutions, investing more money into HBCUs, and increasing racial diversity on all of …

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison Dec 2010

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …

“Cool Posing” On Campus: A Qualitative Study Of Masculinities And Gender Expression Among Black Men At A Private Research Institution., Frank Harris Iii, Robert T. Palmer, Laura E. Struve Dec 2010

“Cool Posing” On Campus: A Qualitative Study Of Masculinities And Gender Expression Among Black Men At A Private Research Institution., Frank Harris Iii, Robert T. Palmer, Laura E. Struve

Frank Harris III

Using theories and concepts relating to the social construction of Black masculinity and male gender role conflict, the authors explored contextualized meanings of masculinities and corresponding behavioral expressions among 22 Black men enrolled at a private research university. The concepts of toughness, aggressiveness, material wealth, restrictive emotionality, and responsibility underscored the meanings the participants ascribed to masculinities. Participants expressed these concepts behaviorally through their pursuit of leadership and academic success, homophobia, and the fear of femininity, and through the sexist and constrained relationships they experienced with women. Based on the findings, practical implications for supporting the gender identity development and …

Labour Integration Of Migrant Workers In Cyprus: A Critical Appraisal, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou Dec 2010

Labour Integration Of Migrant Workers In Cyprus: A Critical Appraisal, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper maps and evaluates the area of migrant labour integration in Cyprus. This is is not an easy task as the issue of integration has for years been a non-starter. Until the end of 2010, when the first national action plan on integration was adopted, the policy framework could only be schematically imagined. It concludes that Integration requires a serious change in the whole way in which migrants are perceived and are structurally located in society. In particular, it requires a radical reform of the current immigration model which needs to shift from the short-term temporary model to a …

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson Dec 2010

Beyond Tolerance: Consciously Using Universal Energy Laws, Discernment, And Harmonious Relationship Principles, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

Every day we, as human beings, maneuver through a myriad of circumstances in our individual and collective life spaces. Central to our experiences is the nature, kind, and quality of our relationships. When we encounter differences (racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, economic, sexual orientation, the mentally and physically challenged), a common issue that often emerges in our experiences is the extent to which we use tolerance in relating to other people and circumstances. For this reason, I want to discuss the nature of tolerance and its limitations, and how to move beyond tolerance by consciously using Universal Energy Laws, discernment, and …

Effects Of Greek Affiliation On African American Students' Engagement: Differences By College Racial Composition., Lori D. Patton, Brian K. Bridges, Lamont A. Flowers Dec 2010

Effects Of Greek Affiliation On African American Students' Engagement: Differences By College Racial Composition., Lori D. Patton, Brian K. Bridges, Lamont A. Flowers

Lori Patton Davis

This study used a nationally representative sample of African American college students to examine the degree to which their affiliation with a Greek-letter organization contributed to engagement in effective educational practices by analyzing National Survey of Student Engagement data at historically Black colleges and universities and predominantly White institutions. Overall, the findings indicated that Greek affiliation does enhance African American student engagement, particularly as it relates to interactions with faculty members and peers. Data also indicated that Greek affiliated members at historically Black colleges and universities appear to be more engaged than their counterparts at predominantly White institutions.

Perspectives On Identity, Disclosure And The Campus Environment Among African American Gay And Bisexual Men At One Historically Black College, Lori D. Patton Dec 2010

Perspectives On Identity, Disclosure And The Campus Environment Among African American Gay And Bisexual Men At One Historically Black College, Lori D. Patton

Lori Patton Davis

This qualitative study examined how 6 African American men at one historically Black college made meaning of their gay or bisexual identity, made decisions about to whom they disclosed this identity, and how their sexual identity experiences were mediated given the context of the campus environment. The findings suggest although this particular HBCU (historically Black college and university) provided the participants an overall supportive and uplifting environment, they experienced challenges with publicly expressing their sexual identities. Implications and recommendations for future research and practice are offered.

Desafios Constitucionais, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2010

Desafios Constitucionais, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Universidade: Um Manifesto Pelo Sonho, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Concretizar A Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2010

Concretizar A Constituição, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

A Contemporary Examination Of Factors Promoting The Academic Success Of Minority Students At A Predominantly White University, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Dina C. Maramba, Phd, Sharon L. Holmes, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Although the numbers of minority students are increasing in higher education, researchers remain concerned about the ability of predominantly White institutions (PWIs) to support and retain these students. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore factors promoting the academic success of minority students at a research intensive PWI. Four themes emerged including the impact of a) student involvement, b) faculty interaction, c) peer support, and c) self-accountability. While this study confirms research about minority students at PWIs, it also provides new insight and provokes questions that warrant further investigation. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

The Impact Of Family Support For African American Males At An Historically Black University: Affirming The Revision Of Tinto’S Theory, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd Dec 2010

The Impact Of Family Support For African American Males At An Historically Black University: Affirming The Revision Of Tinto’S Theory, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Ryan J. Davis, Dina C. Maramba, Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

This qualitative study of 11 Black male students, who entered a public historically Black college and university (HBCU) as academically underprepared and persisted to graduation, provides insight into the ways in which family promote academic success for Black male students at a public HBCU. The study’s findings encourage practitioners at HBCUs to reassess the relationship between family involvement and academic success for Black male students. Further, the findings affirm the justification to revise Tinto’s theory of student departure to account for relationships minority students have with support networks outside the campus milieu.

Using A Tenet Of Critical Theory To Explain The African American Male Achievement Disparity, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Dina C. Maramba,Phd

Robert T. Palmer, PhD

Although African Americans continue to demonstrate a desire for education, African American male enrollment and completion rates in higher education are dismal when compared to other ethnic groups. Researchers and scholars have noted various theories and philosophies responsible for the academic disengagement of African American males in higher education. This article will provide a new contextual lens for understanding the academic disengagement of African American males using a tenet of Critical Theory as a method to explain the African American male achievement disparity. Additionally, this research offers employable strategies and activities that may encourage African American male achievement.
