Maintaining The Boundaries: Teacher Education Program Admission Criteria For Screening Quality Candidates, Diane Taylor Aug 2013

Maintaining The Boundaries: Teacher Education Program Admission Criteria For Screening Quality Candidates, Diane Taylor

Administrative Issues Journal

University – based teacher education programs are currently under attack by the general public for producing non-effective teachers. In order to combat the perception of the “disintegration of teacher preparation” (Baines 2010), Teacher Preparation Programs need to demonstrate to the public the rigor of their screening measures and admissions criteria as a beginning to demonstrating program rigor. This presentation will detail one university’s efforts to collect and analyze admission criteria to Teacher Education Programs in universities across the state.

In Their Footsteps, In Their Words: Special Section, 1914-1963

Colby Magazine

Three wars. A devastating economic depression. Construction of an entirely new campus from scratch. And all in 50 years.

The period that began as World War I erupted and ended as the tumult of the 1960s loomed was marked by a series of unprecedented events that could have mortally wounded a modestly funded liberal arts college in central Maine. The Great War emptied the campus. World War II turned Colby into a military training center. The bold decision to move the College to Mayflower Hill was sandwiched by the Depression and the Korean War and marked by the return of …

International Students As Lucrative Markets Or Vulnerable Populations: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of National And Institutional Events In Four Nations, Grace L. Karram

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The migration of post-secondary students is an increasingly debated phenomenon as the number of students living outside of their home country has risen to more than three million in the past decade. Governments, regions and institutions have developed new structures and strategies to facilitate and benefit from this worldwide student movement. This research article uses Fairclough’s (1993) notion of critical discourse analysis to explore the relationship between two distinct discourses on foreign students: national-level economic competitiveness and institutional-level student success. A comparative approach examines these discursive events in the four leading, Anglophone destination countries: Australia, Britain, Canada and the United …

Tolerance As Civility In Contemporary Workplace Diversity Initiatives, C. W. Von Bergen, George Collier Apr 2013

Tolerance As Civility In Contemporary Workplace Diversity Initiatives, C. W. Von Bergen, George Collier

Administrative Issues Journal

Valuing diversity emphasizes the awareness, recognition, understanding, and appreciation of human differences and revolves around creating an inclusive environment in which everyone feels esteemed. This generally takes place through a series of management education and training programs that attempt to improve interpersonal relationships among workers by asking participants to become more tolerant—generally understood today as an approval and acceptance of others’ practices, opinions, and beliefs. Because tolerance is such a highly desirable quality in U.S. society, and seemingly one of its few non-controversial values, rarely is its significance questioned. Nevertheless, contemporary interpretations of tolerance may be problematic for multicultural programs. …

Effects Of Reading Strategies And The Writing Process With Written Recasts On Second Language Achievement, Helen Ramirez, Don Jones

Administrative Issues Journal

This study examined the effectiveness of teaching methods used with a second language reading and writing unit. This investigation addressed discrepancies between assessment scores in the four communicative language skill areas of students in beginning-level Spanish classes at a suburban middle school. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to explore how literacy-based practices that included teaching strategies used with reading, teaching use of the writing process with a writing assignment, and teacher employment of written recasts affect second language achievement. The theoretical base of the study consisted of second language theories and hypotheses that explained how second language learning …

The Impact Of Symbolic Speech In Public Schools: A Selective Case Analysis From Tinker To Zamecnik, Charles R. Waggoner Apr 2013

The Impact Of Symbolic Speech In Public Schools: A Selective Case Analysis From Tinker To Zamecnik, Charles R. Waggoner

Administrative Issues Journal

The freedom to express the self and the right to a free public education sets the American public school experience apart from those of many other nations. The combination of the two often creates tensions and confrontations that become contentious leading to litigation. For the past fifty years the courts have attempted to balance the symbolic rights of students with the obligation of the school to protect students from bullying, while maintaining decorum that allows all students to pursue an education free from intimidation. Young people express themselves in many ways, often in a symbolic manner that involves the wearing …

Small Rural School District Consolidation In Texas: An Analysis Of Its Impact On Cost And Student Achievement, Dwight A. Cooley, Koy A. Floyd

Administrative Issues Journal

Historically, the number of public school districts in the United States has decreased despite a dramatic increase in the number of students enrolled. Although public school district consolidation has impacted districts of all sizes, since the late 1930’s smaller rural districts facing dwindling community resources have merged or consolidated with each other, resulting in fewer school districts. When school districts consolidate, all aspects of the newly-formed district are affected. Each year, lawmakers and rural public school district officials face dwindling finances, and each year these decision makers question whether to consolidate to avoid fiscal perils. Proponents tout the benefits of …

Developing A New Graduate Program In Healthcare Management: Embracing The Transformation Of Healthcare Management Education On A Pathway To Success, Daniel G. Dominguez, Chris Garcia, Kevin G. Lafrance

Administrative Issues Journal

Within a sea change in the structure and process of providing health services, the field of health administration education has moved decisively and concretely from a teaching-centered model of education based on the assumption that knowledge equals competency to a learning-centered model. The learning-centered, or studentcentered, model is based on the assumption that competency is related to the ability to demonstrate mission- and market-relevant knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. This article provides a comprehensive, non-prescriptive approach to the development of a new competency-based graduate program in health administration within an urban-based, private university located in the Southwest United States. The …

Using An Equity/Performance Matrix To Address Salary Compression/Inversion And Performance Pay Issues, Peter Richardson, Steven Thomas

Administrative Issues Journal

Pay compression and inversion are significant problems for many organizations and are often severe in schools of business in particular. At the same time, there is more insistence on showing accountability and paying employees based on performance. The authors explain and show a detailed example of how to use a Compensation Equity/ Performance Matrix (CEPM) approach to rationally and fairly address both of these issues simultaneously. The context is discussed along with the use and limitations of this approach. The CEPM approach can be used by any type of organization facing these problems.

Reference Letters And The Uninformed Business Educator: A U.S. Legal Perspective, Nina Compton, Pia A. Albinsson Apr 2013

Reference Letters And The Uninformed Business Educator: A U.S. Legal Perspective, Nina Compton, Pia A. Albinsson

Administrative Issues Journal

While providing references to students, business professors have to meet dual demands of giving sincere references to prospective employers while avoiding any potential litigation claims of “defamation” and “violation of privacy” from the students. While the approach of providing bare minimum information may seem to mitigate the risk of litigation claims of defamation from former students, it might serve as a potential pitfall for facing “intentional misrepresentation” liability from the prospective employer. This paper addresses these concerns, together with other legal issues U.S. business educators face in this area of potential liability. Suggestions are offered to those who provide references …

The Virtual Professor: A New Model In Higher Education, Randall Valentine, Robert Bennett Apr 2013

The Virtual Professor: A New Model In Higher Education, Randall Valentine, Robert Bennett

Administrative Issues Journal

Traditional colleges and universities face a unique challenge of increasing the scope of educational operations to accommodate the growing demand for online education. While online enrollments in higher education have grown at a rapid pace, faculty resources have remained stagnant at many institutions due to budget constraints and a sluggish economy. Many administrators in higher education struggle to find a balance between meeting course demands and maintaining quality of instruction while adhering to financial constraints. This paper proposes a model to manage costs by supplementing traditional faculty with virtual faculty who would operate primarily in an online environment and work …

International Collaboration Of Distance Learning Universities For Online Learning In Indonesia, Diki Diki

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

Indonesian higher education must improve its enrollment as well as its quality. One possibility for improving the quality of distance learning universities is collaboration with foreign universities. This paper discusses models for international collaboration among distance learning universities. However, there are also several problems that may result from collaboration. As a consequence, the model of collaboration should include joint development of curriculum, quality assurance, and appropriate technology.

A Strategic Plan: Two-Year Effort Reaffirms Colby's Priorities And Sets Future Course, Stephen Collins

Colby Magazine

Individuals need to do it, and so do institutions. It is critically important, every once in a while, to pause and take stock. What are we doing? Is it the right thing? Does it still make sense, or has something fundamental changed? What are others doing? Is there a better way?

As Colby approached the 21st century, other transitions loomed for the institution as well, not least among them the first new president in more than 20 years. It was a perfect opportunity, trustees recognized, to assess what the College is all about and to think about its future.

We have, in some ways, reduced the focus on our educational mission in order to concentrate more attention on competing with other, similar institutions…The new model, despite its basis in contraction, will give leaders of higher education institutions a chance to return some of our focus to our mission and to de-emphasize the consumerist dynamic under which we have been operating.
