Faculty Senate
Western Kentucky University offers an educational program that emphasizes teaching, research and public service. Research is accomplished in two ways.
The first process is directly sponsored by the University through faculty research grants. These grants are supported by normal departmental efforts to provide an atmosphere for faculty/student involvement in developing and initiating new ideas, technology, and ares of investigation. The second process is that of externally sponsored grant and contract research. Standard 11 discusses both types of funding.

Two groups of Title I Math teachers, one representing school systems which reported second and third grade student achievement gains of one year or more on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills for 1978-79, and one group which reported gains of less than eight months, were surveyed in an effort to identify which methods of presentation and types of materials apparently contributed to the most successful Title I Math programs, in terms of student achievement gains.

A Comparative Study Of Academic Achievement Of Students From Phased-Elective Social Studies Curriculum With Students From A Traditional Social Studies Curriculum, Dennis Minnix
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this study, the academic achievement of two groups of University students was compared. The control group consisted of 15 students who had attended a traditional high school. The experimental group consisted of 25 students who had attended a high school which utilized a phased-elective curriculum design.

First, students were compared at the end of the eighth grade to determine if any significant difference existed prior to their exposure to the two high school programs. Next, students were observed at the end of their high school education by comparing scores …

Exploring Childhood: Discovering Teens, Nancy Erickson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This is a study of a practicum-based child development curriculum for eighth grade students in a middle school setting. One hundred students were tested on self-image concepts and attitudes toward young children after they had been exposed to the curriculum. The experimental group was involved in the "Exploring Childhood" course which gave them experience in actual child care agencies in the community. The control group students used the more traditional child development unit in the home economics program.
Testing showed that the experimental group made significantly higher self-concept scores than the control group. There was no significant difference between the …

Since the beginning of her teaching career, the writer has cherished the hope that the day would come when opportunity and freedom would be given whereby the classroom teacher might saturate her teaching, and that without fear, with those values that exalt and refine the life of each youth that she endeavors to guide. That day has dawned! During recent years seminars, workshops and conferences have been held and the Kentucky program for Moral and Spiritual Education has been recognized as providing a formula which is acceptable to public schools. It is true that spiritual values have always been taught …

Building A Curriculum For The Rineyville School, H. L. Perkins
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
I shall approach this study, both from a survey of the vocation that the students have followed when out of school, and by what they have recommended to be offered in high school. By listing the subjects most needed when out in life, and also a list of the subjects that they would take, should they have their high school days to go over again, should help us to determine just what curriculum to offer.
