Thelma Perso And Colleen Hayward, Teaching Indigenous Students: Cultural Awareness And Classroom Strategies For Improving Learning Outcomes, Jacynta Krakouer, Troy Meston

Jacynta Krakouer

How can cultural responsiveness towards Indigenous students be truly embedded in teaching
pedagogy and national standards? In this book, Perso and Hayward (2015) seek to provide
teachers with practical tools for working effectively with Indigenous students in school
settings. This book is written with the teacher in mind, presenting a contemporary tone
about the complexities of culturally responsive, quality teaching and learning, across
various stages of teaching and assessment. The authors preface their book by emphasising
the relevance of strategies for all students, thus demystifying the ‘exotification’ of Indigenous
learners, with competencies based upon the individualisation of learning for all …

Pulling The Wool Under Your Eyes: Preserving A Century-Old Wool Lab And Library At The University Of Wyoming, David Kruger

David Delbert Kruger

Sheep and wool have long been integral to the agrarian heritage of Western states, and still play a vital role in the region’s agricultural economy. From 1907-2012, Wyoming’s sole university supported wool research around the world through its Wool Department, complete with its own wool laboratory and library. When the Wool Department was permanently dissolved and its building condemned for demolition in 2012, the University of Wyoming (UW) Libraries partnered with UW Extension and the UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to preserve the unusual print and physical artifacts of this unique collection, as well as disseminate the spirit …

Mentoring In The Social Context: Mentors' Experiences With Mentees' Peers In A Site-Based Program, Julia Pryce

Julia Pryce

The primary mechanism by which mentoring promotes positive outcomes is typically considered to be the one- to-one relationship between mentor and youth. However, many mentoring relationships, particularly those in site-based programs, unfold within and are influenced by the larger contexts in which mentoring takes place. In the present study, we examined 161 first-person accounts written by college students serving as Lunch Buddy mentors in an elementary school-based mentoring program. This examination aims to glean insights into mentors' experiences of and responses to their mentees' peers as they carried out the mentoring relationship in a school cafeteria setting, and the ways …

Égalité Et Qualité En Éducation Inclusive En Australie: Le Cas Des Élèves En Situation De Handicap, Joanne Deppeler, Chris Forlin, Dianne J. Chambers, Tim Loreman, Umesh Sharma

Dianne J Chambers

Internationally inclusive education has been variously articulated and interpreted for practice emphasizing both equity and quality in schooling. This article is based data arising from research commissioned by the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) for the Australian Government Department of Education that reviewed inclusive education policies and practices for students with disabilities in Australia. Australia faces a number of challenges if it is to successfully enact all of its stated goals for equity and quality in education. Further, research will need to examine the impact of current neoliberal reform agendas on students with disabilities and investigate professional …

Visiting Teachers' Perceptions About Working With Teacher Assistants And Teachers, Derek Hurrell, Lorraine Day Dec 2014

Visiting Teachers' Perceptions About Working With Teacher Assistants And Teachers, Derek Hurrell, Lorraine Day

Lorraine Day

This chapter looks at two stories from visiting teachers/consultants in settings that were extremely diverse; one situated in a remote community with indigenous students in Western Australia, and the other in suburban schools in two capital cities in Australia. Even though the settings and experiences of the visiting teachers/consultants varied greatly, several themes around working with teachers and teacher assistants in inclusive education emerged. As the visiting teachers/consultants were invited into many schools they had the opportunity to view practices in a range of settings. They came with few preconceived ideas about the constraints of particular workplaces and consequently were …

Can Undergraduate Pre-Service Teachers And Practising Teachers Help Each Other In The Mastery Of Mlearning For The Benefit Of Student Learning?, Jean Macnish, Frank Bate, Serena Davie Dec 2014

Can Undergraduate Pre-Service Teachers And Practising Teachers Help Each Other In The Mastery Of Mlearning For The Benefit Of Student Learning?, Jean Macnish, Frank Bate, Serena Davie

Jean MacNish

Undergraduate pre-service teachers have been shown to develop high levels of technological competence in ICT as they progress through their degree. However, they lack opportunities to integrate ICT into a real pedagogical experience. Conversely, practising teachers typically have sophisticated pedagogical knowledge, but many have not been exposed to the latest developments in ICT. This research question investigates the synergy between the pre-service and practising teachers using a community of practice approach.
Partnerships between university and school communities have high potential in terms of sharing ideas, generating knowledge and improving practices. Initial findings are presented of a longitudinal case study between …

Mathematics: A Good Predictor For Success In A Health Science Degree, Gregory S. C. Hine, Ryan Anderton, Christopher Joyce

Gregory S.C. Hine

Research-based literature indicates that secondary school mathematics performance is highly predictive of university performance Moreover, scholars suggest that success in secondary mathematics courses translates into success in tertiary degrees where mathematics is required. This paper examines the extent to which the completion of secondary school mathematics courses is predictive of academic success for 57 first-year students enrolled in a Health Science degree at The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) (Fremantle Campus). Using the University’s databases, the level of mathematics completed at secondary school was examined against gender, Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) and Grade Point Average (GPA). A statistical analysis …

Early Childhood At The Cultural Interface, Marguerite Maher, Lisa Buxton Dec 2014

Early Childhood At The Cultural Interface, Marguerite Maher, Lisa Buxton

Marguerite Maher

The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia emphasises that children’s own identity is constructed within
their given context of family and community. This article presents the findings of a multiple case study project
undertaken within five remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, Australia. Community Elders
were concerned that while their children had a positive sense of self during their prior-to-school years, on entry
into formal schooling they experienced a disjuncture between those experiences and the expectations of a
Western curriculum. The project involved partnering one university academic to work with each community,
exploring ways of improving 4-year-old children’s pre-reading …

A National Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Publicly Funded Pre-Kindergarten, Brad J. Hershbein, Timothy J. Bartik

Brad J. Hershbein

The effects of state and local government funded pre-K programs on racial and income inequality will be studied. How the effects vary with whether pre-K is targeted on the poor or is more universal will be estimated. How the effects vary with pre-K program quality and whether or not expansion of high-quality pre-K would significantly reduce economic and social inequality across different races and income groups will also be examined. This study will go beyond previous research by considering all states and by adding relevance and increasing precision of estimation. Secondly, it includes measures, not only of the overall probability …

Multi-Positioning Mathematics Class Size: Teachers' Views, Boris Handal, Kevin Watson, Marguerite Maher

Boris Handal

This paper explores mathematics teachers’ perceptions about class size and the impact class size has on teaching and learning in secondary mathematics classrooms. It seeks to understand teachers’ views about optimal class sizes and their thoughts about the education variables that influence these views. The paper draws on questionnaire responses from 83 secondary mathematics teachers as well as interviews with 12 of these teachers. Although this current study focuses on mathematics teachers, it is nested in a much larger study across all subject areas. This present study found that class size directly impacts the attention teachers pay to individual students, …

The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof of concept of a collaborative
peer-, self- and lecturer assessment processes. The research presented here is part
of an ongoing study on self- and peer assessments in higher education. The
authentic assessment for sustainable learning (AASL) model is evaluated in
terms of the correlations between sets of marks. The article provides an explanation
of the assessment process, and analyses sets of marks as a means of justifying
the validity of the process. The results suggest that students, even those with
no prior experience in peer- or self-evaluation, in their first …

'Are We There Yet?' Revisiting The Digital Education Revolution, Kathryn Moyle Dec 2014

'Are We There Yet?' Revisiting The Digital Education Revolution, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle

The directions being promoted in the Australian Curriculum in relation to teaching and learning with technologies, have been dated and out of kilter with directions being taken overseas, including Australia's near neighbours of Singapore, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea and New Zealand (Moyle, 2015). But the Australian Curriculum does build upon a spasmodic history in Australian school education of incorporating technologies into students' learning at school. This paper provides a summary of the peaks and troughs that can be seen in this spasmodic history, by using the $2.027 billion, Digital Education Revolution (DER) as a landmark policy from which …
