Standards Of Elementary School Service, Robert E. Mcconnell Jan 1944

Standards Of Elementary School Service, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The time has come when every elementary-school teacher should be a college graduate. This could be accomplished immediately following the war if each state should require a college education as a prerequisite to the certification of newly trained teachers. When the standards for the education of teachers and for initial certification are raised to this level, the standards of school service will automatically reach an appropriate level. It is hoped that the public (parents) will soon rise up and demand this degree of professional respectability of the teachers of their children.

The Bowling Green College of Commerce is a division of the Bowling Green Business University, a privately owned and controlled institution which has been located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since its removal there in 1884 from Glasgow, Kentucky. Until 1906 the Southern Normal School was associated with the Business University under the same management, but in that year the Normal School was made a state institution, the Western Kentucky State Normal School, and the Business University continued under private management.

In 1922 the Bowling Green College of Commerce was organized with an independent state charter as a division of the …

Vocabulary Study As A Means Of Increasing Speed And Comprehension In Reading, Florence Hunnicutt Aug 1942

Vocabulary Study As A Means Of Increasing Speed And Comprehension In Reading, Florence Hunnicutt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There is a need for a clearer understanding of the methods by which vocabularies can be enlarged most effectively. Results of experiments indicate that pupils are unable to recognize their own deficiencies and needs in respect to the meanings of words; consequently they need some type of guidance in enlarging their meaning vocabularies. Teachers are agreed that word lists are a non-effective device. They are agreed, too, that not one or a few techniques are being used to teach the meanings of new words, but many techniques. The two most effective seem to be (1) relating the word to former …

A Critical Analysis Of Report Cards Used In New Mexico, John Robert Grove

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Many of the ties that used to bind the home and school are gone. The home and the school no longer have the feeling of intimacy that prevailed between them two hundred years ago. In the early American schools it was possible for the teacher to know the parents of nearly every child in the school room. Since this possibility no longer exists in the same degree, some link must be evolved to connect both the home and the school; some method to take the place of meetings on the street or conversations after prayer meeting must be organized to …

Six Books On Child Development, Robert E. Mcconnell Mar 1942

Six Books On Child Development, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

In the education of teachers for the elementary schools, it is important that they be tutored in the field of child-development as well as in subjects that give them a knowledge of life such as art, science, social science, mathematics, language and literature. The first deals with the learner and the second with those phases of life to be learned. Many young teachers report that in their early endeavors at teaching they have greater concern over the dealing with the child than in the branches of knowledge. The understanding of the child is the important consideration in many of their …

The new elementary school of the Central Washington College of Education, at Ellensburg, which was completed in September, 1939, is a foremost example of the new type of structure which is replacing the old and inadequate formal training school. It was designed to house a modern and functional elementary school and to be an integral part of a progressive teacher-education program. The curriculum is based upon contemporary life and individual student needs. It provides facilities for enabling teachers in training to secure the necessary experiences essential to the administration of the modern elementary school.

A History Of The Public Schools Of Raton, New Mexico, Carson Creecy Jun 1941

A History Of The Public Schools Of Raton, New Mexico, Carson Creecy

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Educational literature is singularly lacking in studies of the actual development of typical school systems. This raises the question of whether such a study would be of any value as a contribution to educational literature. If the interest manifested by all school people who had a part in the preparation of this study can be used as a measure, then both an interest and a need are felt.

Rating Teachers To Help Them Grow, Emil E. Samuelson Jun 1941

Rating Teachers To Help Them Grow, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

In 1936 there was considerable dissatisfaction with the rating scale being used in the supervision of student teaching at the Central Washington College of Education, and it was felt that a new scale was needed. Consequently, three faculty members, the primary supervisor, the supervisor of rural teaching, and the director of personnel and placement decided to make a detailed study and to construct a new rating scale. The Ellensburg scale, originally evolved for the rating of student teachers with emphasis on guiding their growth, should be equally helpful in the rating and guidance of teachers in service.

History Of Education In Quay County, New Mexico, Willard W. Moon

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

No comprehensive history of education in Quay County, New Mexico, has been written. Because of the diversity of interests, people of this section have devoted little time to gathering, organizing, and interpreting the materials of history. There must be soon come, however, an insistent demand for such movement. No people can afford to remain ignorant of its past life and the means by which its institution have grown. This study is limited to the educational institutions of what is now Quay County, New Mexico. It is the desire of the writer to portray the educational development as it is, and …

The Evaluation Of Teachers And Teaching, Emil E. Samuelson May 1941

The Evaluation Of Teachers And Teaching, Emil E. Samuelson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The need for accurate evaluation of teachers and teaching is strongly indicated by various current situations. Among these is the oversupply of trained teachers and of candidates for admittance to teacher-training institutions. What candidates shall be selected for training? What teachers already trained shall be given preference in placement? And, finally, what criteria may be applied to determine professional advancement, Adequate evaluation of the type mentioned would help us to the answers of these questions.
