Federal and state mandates have placed an added pressure on teachers to demonstrate “effective” instructional practices. These mandates also affect the role of a principal, as an evaluator of “effective” instructional strategies, and as an instructional leader who continuously needs to build teacher capacity to satisfy these mandates. Accountability mandates promise to improve students’ academic performance but they have lacked professional development that would provide the support teachers and principals need to achieve success. Place value is a concept in which students in elementary school struggle and instruction and curricular materials continue to introduce and teach place value in a disconnected fashion. This study introduced place value through a modeling perspective, focusing specifically on using the bar model to represent units and quantity. The investigation piloted a place value module highlighting the use of the bar model in four first grade classrooms with high percentages of diverse learners, many from low-income families and with limited English language proficiency. This paper, based on empirical research, considers how structure and agency together reproduce the social practices surrounding mobile phone use in secondary schools in the United Kingdom. Many schools have policies banning their use in class, reflecting and supporting the dominant social construction of mobile phones as tools for social use, but not for learning. This study aimed to understand how mobile phones could support learning in secondary schools, and identified activities across many subject areas and year levels. It also showed that hands-on experience had a positive effect on students’ attitudes to mobile phones for learning in school. The …
