Implementing An Assessment Program: A Faculty Member’S Perspective, Robert Becker
Implementing An Assessment Program: A Faculty Member’S Perspective, Robert Becker
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
In 1999, after several exploratory meetings, the college administration established an ad-hoc interdisciplinary assessment committee to begin a conversation about what students were taught and how faculty knew what was learned and what was not. At the first meeting of this committee, composed of representatives of the college’s seventeen teaching departments, the library, student affairs, institutional planning, research, and assessment, and academic affairs, several impediments to a formalized college-wide assessment initiative immediately became apparent. While a culture of informal assessment already existed as instructors daily grappled with effectively teaching their students, the notion of a widespread institutionalized plan was alien. …

Governing boards have the unenviable duty of trying to oversee in a responsible and responsive way a complex and long-enduring social institution whose arcane workings few board members, administrators, or faculty ever fully comprehend. Enduring social institutions of any kind are, of course, like great leviathans borne by currents and instincts in ways and directions they need not understand in their continuing pursuit of sustenance and self-preservation. However, if one is to effect any meaningful change in the values and conduct of the leviathan, one must take into account the environmental dynamics and motivational stimuli that determine the thing’s behavior. …

Perceived Efficacy Of Marriage Counseling In Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study Of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijebu Ode, J.T.B. Oluwatimilehin

It has long been recognized that the major causes of difficulties of students are anxieties and psychological stresses (Adeyemo, 2000; Owuamanam, 2000; and Akinleye, 2003). According to Adeyemo (2000), concern over studies, unusual physical complaint and difficulties with interpersonal relationship have often led to successful or attempted suicide among students. Students in Nigeria tertiary institutions have a great need for guidance and counseling. This assertion is largely informed by the cultural conflict between the Western and African values whereby students are engaged in developing both occupational and social identities. This seems to support the view of Owuamanam (2000)who reported that …

Students enter higher education requiring remediation before they can be expected to be successful as they progress through their courses. The students enter from many different high schools with a variety of personal backgrounds. It is the job of leadership in institutions of higher education to suggest attributes of general education programs that are likely to be successful in increasing student learning and enhancing the likelihood of transferring knowledge from developmental classes to later programs of study.

Factual recall is an aspect of memory which deals with the lower order cognitive functioning comprising of knowledge and comprehension. It is the aspect of memory which serves as the foundation for the higher order cognitive functioning which includes application, synthesis and evaluation of knowledge. Definitely, good factual recall ability is needed to enable man acquire knowledge and comprehension which form the basis for ability to apply, evaluate and synthesize knowledge at the higher levels of learning. Interestingly, factual recall skill is not present equally in all human beings. Some people have the capacity to keep things for long in …

Supervision Of Universal Basic Education Centers In Anambra State, Nigeria: Concept, Challenges And Prospects, Edho Genesis
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Supervision of schools in the UBE programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria is an aspect of quality control. It is bound with the efficiency of learning and improvement of the teaching/ learning services. Quality control of Basic Education centers is closely associated with a vital component of education (Monitoring & Evaluation). Today, ‘Quality Control’ is used more or less as a synonym for supervision or inspection which is within the comprehension of the wider segment of the educated publics. Instructional supervision in Nigeria began as a process of external inspection. In the 18th century, supervision was characterized by inspection …

Teachers, facilitators, and instructors must understand their students in order to affect learning. Understanding who learners are and how they develop cognitively, emotionally, and intellectually will help instructors create learning opportunities which will enhance student knowledge. The same is true when it is the teacher who becomes the student. Whether the readers of this article are teachers, administrators, or professional development providers, adults must understand how adults learn, and teachers should allow themselves the opportunity to remember what it is like to be a learner (Brookfield, 1995).

Whose Responsibility Is It Anyway: The Student-Athlete?, James Satterfield, Chris Croft, Michael Godfrey
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
In today’s world of higher education, intercollegiate athletics, and complex society there is much focus and attention placed on the student-athlete. Regardless of the region of the country, the level of the school or the specific sport, the student-athlete experiences a high level of public and private scrutiny, which is often negative. According to Watson (2006), the general perception of college student-athletes is that they are privileged, pampered, lazy, out-of-control, and primarily attend school with the sole purpose of participating in intercollegiate athletics. This stereotype is often held by people who do not fully understand the relationship between the student-athlete …

Women’S Access To Senior Management Positions In The University Of Abuja – Nigeria, Isaiah Ilo
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Most of the research on women in higher education management has been conducted in the Western setting, particularly in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia. Similar studies have also been done in Asia, with reference to Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, and in a few cases in Africa, with reference to South Africa and Kenya. Little has been done on the subject in Nigeria. In one of such works on a related issue, Oloruntoba & Ajayi (2006) used data on the research outputs of 219 academics in three Nigerian agricultural universities to compare gender with research attainment. The findings …

The global consensus is that education is a process that helps the whole human being, physically, mentally morally, socially and technologically. This enables one to function in any environment in which one may find oneself. Education also performs a major role in equipping the individual with the skills and knowledge which would help to transform any economy. Thus, it is the greatest investment that any nation can make for the quick development of its economic, political, sociological and human resources. Believing that education is the cornerstone for national development, Nigeria has adapted education as the “principal instrument par excellence” for …

Exploring Principal Leadership Roles Within A Community Of Practice To Promote Science Performance Of English Language Learners, David Carrejo, Teresa Cortez, Judy Reinhartz
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The world we live in continues to become more technologically advanced and educating youth to become productive citizens in an ever-changing global society is vital. The importance and necessity of educating an increasingly diverse student population has become a top priority for Pre-K-16 educators. To meet this challenge and set priorities for serving English Language Learners (ELLs), educators at all levels need to forge a clear vision and shared commitment for fostering “… a sense of belonging and community that inspires collaboration” among its members for the success of all students (Texas Association of School Administrators, 2008, p. 4).

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Participating in a search for a new faculty member, whether as a search committee member, search committee chairperson, department chairperson, or dean, poses unique challenges for those in academics. Though we may be an expert in conducting rigorous research, a prolific writer, or a gifted “sage on the stage” in the classroom, few of us are also experts in academic recruiting. All too frequently we bumble through the search process, hoping fervently that the person we ultimately hire – the person who will likely be our colleague for decades – is someone who will turn out to be a serious …

The researcher was motivated to carry out this research study following her keen interest to investigate influence of Parental Socio Economic Status family type on school dropout in the Ewutu Educational Circuit in Winneba township having observed that a great number of primary school pupils are often found roaming the streets in school uniforms during school hours. She also observed that a sizable number of school going age children are found hawking around, with babies tied behind their backs. The researcher became interested in investigating if Parental Socio Economic Status and the type of families these pupils come from do …
The Meaning Of Scientific Literacy: A Model Of Relevance In Science Education, Jacobson Nbina, B.J. Obomanu
The Meaning Of Scientific Literacy: A Model Of Relevance In Science Education, Jacobson Nbina, B.J. Obomanu
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
The term ‘scientific literacy’ has been used in the literature for more than four decades (Gallagher & Harsch, 1997), although not always with the same meaning (Bybee, 1997). It is a simple term and its major advantage is that it sums up, at the school level, the intentions of science education. The term scientific literacy avoids the use of distracting detail and, as such, convincingly portrays a complex idea which intuitively appears to be correct (Baumert, 1997). Baumert recognises that the core of the idea behind scientific literacy lies in its analogy with literacy.

Millennial Sex Habits: The Sexual Attitudes And Behaviors Of Unmarried Undergraduate Males At A Small, Private, Christian Institution, Travis T. York
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This study analyzed the sexual attitudes and behaviors of 211 unmarried, traditionally-aged undergraduate males at a small, private, Christian, liberal arts institution in western Pennsylvania. As hypothesized, data were largely consistent with millennial theorists’ projections about current students’ decline in sexual activity in comparison to data from the past. The results of this project also confirm the relevance of the Social Norms Theory to the study of sexual behavior (Berkowitz, 2003). Descriptive data and definitions of sex, virginity, and abstinence are also discussed. This research suggests that student development professionals should invest in education and programming that provides accurate statistics …

Promoting Student Faith Development Within Evangelical Higher Education Through Engaging People Of Other Faiths, Bruce R. Norquist, Terry E. Williams
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
This qualitative study investigated the perceptions of students, administrators, and faculty at two universities within the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) regarding the extent, nature, and impact engagement with people of other faiths had on student faith development. The findings confirmed that constructive engagements with people of other faiths do indeed have a strong and positive impact on faith development. Significant barriers, however, were found that serve to impede the extent and quality of interactions with people of other faiths on the campus. At the same time, institutional leaders, including student development professionals, were found to play a …

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
The purpose of this study is to examine the spiritual development of eight participants in a living-learning community at Abilene Christian University. Using a qualitative methodology, this study attempted to capture the voices of participants as they concluded a year together in a Barrett Hall living-learning community (LCC). Data were collected over a period of 2-3 weeks through individual semi-structured interviews, as well as one focus group comprised of all eight community members. Data were analyzed to capture meaningful themes and categories. Implications for practice are discussed.

Investigating Mathematical Literacy Through Teacher Language, Alyson Lischka
Investigating Mathematical Literacy Through Teacher Language, Alyson Lischka
Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
Communication about mathematical concepts using appropriate terminology is a standard established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. However, international test results show that United States’ students are lagging in mathematical literacy. This case study analyzes the ways in which instructors use language to help students move toward conceptual understanding of mathematical vocabulary. Three mathematics education professors at a mid-size four year institution were observed teaching math classes to students enrolled in elementary or secondary certification programs. Collected data included: audio-recorded observations and field notes, lesson artifacts such as quizzes and handouts, and audio-recorded interviews with each participant. Findings …
Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence
Extending K-8 Mathematics Concepts In Alternate Bases, Dianna J. Spence
Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
When learning to represent mathematics with manipulatives, many pre-service K-8 teachers rely on memorized rote procedures to perform the associated mathematical tasks; then they arrange the manipulatives to match their result, often with minimal understanding of underlying mathematical connections. In a Number and Operations course for K-8 pre-service teachers, a portion of the class was conducted in alternate bases: Base 6 and Base 8 Blocks were used to model operations with integers to facilitate deeper understanding of the number systems and arithmetic processes being represented. Fractions and decimals were later covered only in Base 10. On midterm and final exams, …

Basic Skills Testing In Math 2008, Susie M. Lanier, Sharon Taylor, Donna B. Saye
Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
Math 2008 is an Area F course for early childhood majors in the University System of Georgia. The course covers basic skills that pre-service teachers will most likely be teaching in their career. At Georgia Southern University, many students in the course do not possess or have forgotten these basic skills. In Fall 2009, a basic skills test was implemented for Math 2008. Students must earn a score of 90 or higher on the test in order to pass the course. The test not only serves to let students know their areas of weakness, but also informs the instructor’s teaching. …
