Livros Norte-Americanos De Historia Da Educação No Brasil: Origem E Orientação Dos Textos Do Século Xix [American Books On The History Of Education In Brazil: The Origin And Orientation Of Texts Published In The Xix Century], Karl M. Lorenz
Karl M Lorenz

Is There Any Interdependence Between Economic Growth And Human Development? Evidence From Indian States, Sacchidananda Mukherjee Dr., Debashis Chakraborty
Is There Any Interdependence Between Economic Growth And Human Development? Evidence From Indian States, Sacchidananda Mukherjee Dr., Debashis Chakraborty
Sacchidananda Mukherjee
This paper attempts to analyse the evolving relationship between economic growth and human development for 28 major Indian states during four time periods ranging over the last two decades, viz. 1983, 1993, 1999-2000 and 2004-05. The objective of this exercise is to understand whether per capita income (as an indicator of economic growth) is influenced by human development and vice versa across Indian states. The National Human Development Report 2001 methodology has been applied for constructing the Human Development Index (HDI) for the Indian states. The HDI has been constructed separately for rural and urban areas for each of the …

African American Students In Counselor Education Programs: Perceptions Of Their Experiences, Malik S. Henfield Ph.D., Delila Owens Ph.D., Sheila Witherspoon Ph.D.
Sheila Witherspoon Ph.D.
The authors explored 11 African American doctoral students' perceptions of their experiences in counselor education programs, and their findings are presented. Using a phenomenological methodological framework, the authors investigated the various systems of support that students use as they navigate their respective programs. Human agency was the theoretical framework for this study, and 4 themes emerged from the data: assertiveness. more experienced African American students, race-based organizations, and personal and professional care from advisors. Implications for students and counselor education programs are discussed.

“The More You Put Into It, The More You Get Out Of It:” The Educational Gains Of Fraternity/Sorority Officers, Larry D. Long, Alex Snowden
Larry D. Long
The purpose of this study was to determine if undergraduate fraternity and sorority members who serve as chapter officers report different experiences and gains compared to non-officers. The researchers sampled 3,008 fraternity members and 3,745 sorority members from the aggregate results of the institutions that used the AFA/EBI Fraternity/Sorority Assessment during the 2009-2010 academic year. Differences by leadership experience were tested using Cliff’s delta. The researchers found significant differences in the development of chapter officers and non-officers for eight of nine educational gains measures with chapter officers reporting greater gains in these areas. Chapter officers were also more likely to …

Beyond “Talent, Technology And Tolerance”: What Are The Lessons For Education In The Future?, Marie Parker Jenkins Prof., Patricia Mannix Mcnamara Dr.
Dr. Patricia Mannix McNamara
Richard Florida, an American theorist has argued that in the future we need to develop three things: Talent, Technology and Tolerance. Using this framework to inform our discussion, we examine key issues concerning policy and practice to support education for the future. This will be informed by perspectives drawing on British and Irish contexts and what these two States tell us about current issues. Global concerns over raising the academic attainment of all children for employability; responding to cultural diversity in the classroom; and having access to knowledge which informs young peoples choices are the three underpinning themes. We problematise …
Fostering Speaking Across The Room, Across The Curriculum, Patricia L. Rieman
Fostering Speaking Across The Room, Across The Curriculum, Patricia L. Rieman
Patricia L Rieman
While secondary educators worry about covering content in the face of preparing for standardized testing, best practice methods that provide students with opportunities to speak in the classroom may fall to the wayside. Rieman describes landmark and current research that support the use of speaking in the classroom, delineates professional standards that promote speaking, and provides specific methods and examples that may be used across the curriculum to foster student engagement. Methods described include discussion webs, Intra-Act, Save the Last Word, grand conversations, and informal debates.
Approximate Solution Of Fractional Integro-Differential Equations By Taylor Expansion Method, Li Huang
Approximate Solution Of Fractional Integro-Differential Equations By Taylor Expansion Method, Li Huang
Li Huang
In this paper, Taylor expansion approach is presented for solving (approximately) a class of inear fractional integro-differential equations including those of Fredholm and of Volterra types. By means of themth-order Taylor expansion of the unknown function at an arbitrary point, the linear fractional integro-differential equation can be converted approximately to a system of equations for the unknown function itself and its m derivatives under initial conditions. This method gives a simple and closed form solution for a linear fractional integro-differential equation. In addition, illustrative examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.
'Using Drama In Education To Develop Pre-Service English Teachers' Understanding And Capacity In Teaching Social Justice At Post-Primary Level', Jennifer Hennessy
'Using Drama In Education To Develop Pre-Service English Teachers' Understanding And Capacity In Teaching Social Justice At Post-Primary Level', Jennifer Hennessy
Dr. Jennifer Hennessy
One of the most common forms of non-recognition in education is for a group to be generally left outside educational discourse by not being named or known (Lynch and Baker 2005). Addressing inequalities of respect and recognition involves, amongst other things, the development of critical and empathetic perspectives and of educational experiences which enable critical dialogue (Lynch and Baker 2005). This paper examines a project conducted in the University of Limerick in 2010 with a cohort of 3rd year pre-service English teachers. The aim of the project was to facilitate an understanding of how drama in education could be used …

Adaptive Responses To Flooding Incidents In Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, Habiba I. Jimoh, Kayode A. Iroye
Confluence Journal Environmental Studies (CJES), Kogi State University, Nigeria
Incidents of floods which are mainly caused by changes in landuse is fast becoming a city life experience in Ilorin as in most urban centres in Nigeria causing untold hardships and sometimes loss of lives. This extreme hydro-meteorological event is also being exacerbated by climate change which thus calls for adaptive response by residents towards reducing its risks, hence this study. Data used were generated from direct field measurements and questionnaire administration. Descriptive statistics and cross tabulations were used in analyzing the data. Results obtained indicate that most respondents use a wide range of non-structural adaptive response to flood. The …

Dr. Uche J. Obidiegwu
This paper is articulated in the interest of new entrants into the profession of adult education, to colleagues – educators and non-educators, who may wish to share in this all- embracing and encompassing discipline which seems to be confusing to many people, also for the advancement of knowledge in this area of study. The paper explains why the concept of adult education seems confusing, reviews some definitions of adult education by different authors, proposes some definitions, highlighted andragogy as conceived by Malcolm Knowles and pointed out that it should not be viewed as being in sharp contrast with pedagogy in …
