Overlooked And Overshadowed: Exploring The Multiple Dimensions Of Identity In Traditionally-Aged Undergraduate Student-Parents, Paula A. Caldwell

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Student-parents are a rapidly growing student population, consisting of more than 20% of undergraduate college students today (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Research about student-parents has historically focused on graduate students and adult learners, yet these studies overlook traditionally-aged undergraduate student-parents who constitute over one-quarter of the student-parent population. Traditional four-year institutions continue to dismiss the needs and experiences of student-parents as these colleges are primarily designed to serve traditional undergraduate students with no major external responsibilities. As such, the traditionally-aged undergraduate student-parent population is left underserved and unsupported in their pursuit of education. This study contributes to the …

Seven counseling and guidance students from California participated in a study abroad program in which they were placed in a high school in Auckland, New Zealand, for one month. They suggest that the participants benefited from being immersed in a culturally different context where they had to consider differences in school organization, counseling priorities, and students’ cultural mores. This immersion required them to think about their own professional values and to engage in high level learning, appropriate to masters level field experience work. They …

Getting Involved On A College Campus, Laura Johnson, Amanda Jarrett

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

According to Astin’s Theory of Involvement, what a student gains from being involved is directly proportional to both the qualitative and quantitative amount of involvement (Astin, 1999). In addition, research has proven that there is a positive correlation in student involvement with retention and academics (Kuh and Pike, 2005). Getting involved on campus is an ongoing process, and it is important for students to utilize a university’s recourses to help guide them in the possibilities. A university’s Student Activities office is just one of many areas on campus that students can find a myriad of ways to get involved. Students …

Capstone Research Projects

There is a growing concern that recent graduates of colleges and universities are not performing up to par with employers’ standards. Research studies in career readiness have not clearly established definition nor measure of career readiness.
